We describe the proportion of VZV infection in central nervous system (CNS) infectious syndromes in a single Israeli medical center. An observational cohort study was conducted in Kaplan Medical Center (a secondary hospital, Israel) between July 1, 2014, and March 31, 2019. Included were adult patients (≥ 16 years old) with CNS infection with an aseptic CSF profile that were subjected to molecular tests for herpes viruses, HSV either 1 or 2, VZV, enteroviruses, and IgM for West Nile virus (WNV).

Bloodstream infections (BSI) are defined by the presence of viable bacteria or fungi, accompanied by systemic signs of infection. Choosing empirical therapy based solely on patient risk factors and prior antibiotic susceptibility test (AST) may lead to either ineffective treatment or unnecessarily broad-spectrum antibiotic exposure. In general, Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute guideline-approved ASTs have a turnaround time of 48-72 h from sample to answer, a period that may result in a critical delay in the appropriate selection of therapy.

Methods: Umbilical cord and peripheral venous blood from newborn infants born at Kaplan Medical Center, Israel, from April to October 2014 were studied for serum bactericidal titres against Group B Streptococcus (GBS) and Escherichia coli (E.

Objective: To evaluate changes in ovarian reserve in patients following hysterectomy, with or without bilateral salpingectomy or fimbriectomy.
Study Design: Open-label, prospective cohort trial of patients undergoing hysterectomy for benign uterine indications. Levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), and ultrasonic measures of peak systolic flow velocity/diastolic velocity (S/D) ratio and resistance index (RI) in the ovarian artery were taken from patients before and 6 weeks after hysterectomy, hysterectomy+salpingectomy or hysterectomy+fimbriectomy.

Four immunocompromised patients, immigrants from Ethiopia, presented with diverse clinical manifestations of meningitis associated with Strongyloides stercoralis dissemination as determined by identification of intestinal larvae. The cerebrospinal fluid of 3 patients was tested by a validated (for stool) real-time PCR for S. stercoralis and was found positive, establishing this association.

Copper oxide impregnated linens have wide-spectrum antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. Our aim was to determine if replacing non-biocidal linens with biocidal copper oxide impregnated linens would reduce the rates of healthcare-associated infections (HAI) in a long-term care ward.

Using bioinformatics tools, we identified five 19- to 40-mer signal peptide (SP) domain vaccine candidates (VCs) derived from M. tuberculosis antigens.

An intervention that aimed to diminish its prevalence was constructed and applied in our institute.
Methods: We analyzed the efficacy of the intervention during the years 2006-2010 using quasi-experimental methodology.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an uncommon cause of bacteremia upon hospital admission (UHA) and the chosen empirical antimicrobial therapy may not cover it appropriately. In a multicenter prospective study conducted in Israel, we evaluated risk factors for in-hospital mortality in patients with P. aeruginosa bacteremia UHA and determined the influence of delay in adequate empirical antimicrobial therapy on patients' outcome.

We aimed to identify predictors and outcomes of ESBL bacteremia upon hospital admission (UHA) in a nationwide prospective study. Thus, a multicenter prospective study was conducted in 10 Israeli hospitals.

The second isolate developed resistance to ciprofloxacin and the third isolate to piperacillin-tazobactam (PIP-TZ) following sequential therapy with each agent. The first isolate was resistant to PIP-TZ only at high inocula, the second isolate acquired increased transcription of the acrA gene, and the third isolate became resistant to PIP-TZ due to loss of beta-lactamase inhibition by TZ.

An increased prevalence of food allergy noted specifically in children receiving tacrolimus immunosuppression supports the hypothesis that selective suppression of Th1 lymphocytes by the IL-2 inhibitor immunosuppressants CsA, and the more potent drug, tacrolimus , promotes Th2 lymphocytes and an allergic immune response. This study was undertaken to characterize the IgE-mediated immune response, in CsA and tacrolimus-treated, post-OLT children.

Methods: This retrospective study took place in a large community-based, geriatric hospital and included 191 patients aged 75-105 years with urine and blood cultures simultaneously positive for bacterial organisms. Records were analysed for demographic information, clinical and laboratory data over a 29 month period.
Aim: To evaluate the effect of a change in antibiotic protocol on pathogens that cause neonatal sepsis.
Methods: Suspected sepsis was treated with amikacin together with ceftazidime in 1995-1998 and piperacillin/tazobactam in 1999-2002.
Results: The annual rate for Klebsiella sepsis fell from 2.
Background: Human parvovirus B19 is responsible for a variety of clinical syndromes, such as erythema infectiosum, non-immune hydrops fetalis, transient aplastic anemia, and arthropathies. HPV is also suspected of playing a role in the pathogenesis of various chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, Kawasaki disease and multiple sclerosis.
Objectives: To study the age distribution and clinical presentation of patients hospitalized for human parvovirus B19 infection.
