Objectives: To assess how biomarkers indicating central nervous system insult (neurobiomarkers) vary in peripheral blood with exertional-heat stress from prolonged endurance exercise.

Design: Observational study of changes in neuron specific enolase (NSE), S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100β), Glial Fibrillary Acid Protein (GFAP) and Ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase isozyme L1 (UCHL1) at Brighton Marathon 2022.

Methods: In 38 marathoners with in-race core temperature (Tc) monitoring, exposure (High, Intermediate or Low) was classified by cumulative hyperthermia - calculated as area under curve of Time × Tc > 38 °C - and also by running duration (finishing time).

Objective: Women with gestational diabetes (GDM) have an increased risk of preeclampsia and postpartum diabetes. Inflammation associates with both GDM and preeclampsia. Background And Aims: Current strategies to reduce cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in young adults are largely limited to those at extremes of risk. In cohort studies we have shown cluster analysis identified a large sub-group of adolescents with multiple risk factors. This study examined if individuals classified at 'high-risk' by cluster analysis could also be identified by their Framingham risk scores.

Introduction: Dexamethasone is an antiemetic that is frequently administered before or after the induction of anesthesia for prevention and treatment of perioperative nausea and vomiting. Dexamethasone has anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects primarily via suppression of expression of inflammatory mediators. However, its effect on the eicosanoids and docosanoids that mediate the inflammatory response and inflammation resolution are unclear.

Increased inspired oxygen concentration does not adversely affect oxidative stress and the resolution of inflammation during reperfusion in patients undergoing knee replacement surgery.

The level of inspired oxygen during surgery may modify free radical release, and reperfusion injury. This controlled trial examined the effect of inspired oxygen on F-isoprostanes (F-IsoPs), isofurans (IsoFs), and specialized mediators of inflammation resolution (SPM) during knee replacement surgery. Patients received either 30% O (control  = 21), 50% O ( = 20), or 80% O ( = 19) O, in a parallel design.

Purpose Of Review: To examine outstanding issues in the relationship of alcohol to hypertension. These include whether the increase in BP with alcohol is causally related, the nature of the relationship in women, the contribution of alcohol-related increases in BP to cardiovascular disease and the aetiology of alcohol-related hypertension.

Recent Findings: Intervention studies and Mendelian randomisation analyses confirm the alcohol-BP relationship is causal.

Effect of weight loss on neutrophil resolvins in the metabolic syndrome.

Background: Non-resolving inflammation associates with obesity and insulin resistance, and may be dependent on the balance of inflammatory substances and specialised pro-resolving mediators of inflammation (SPM) that act to halt the inflammatory response. This controlled trial examined the effect of weight loss on neutrophil synthesis of SPM in volunteers with the metabolic syndrome (MetS).

Methods: Volunteers with MetS (n = 42) were matched for age and gender and randomly assigned to a 12-wk weight loss program followed by 4-wk weight stabilization or a 16-wk weight maintenance program.
