Irrigation is considered a form of agricultural intensification and is of significant importance in arid and semi-arid regions, such as those in the Mediterranean basin. This region differs substantially from temperate ones, in terms of climate, land-use policies and types of agricultural systems. Therefore, how biodiversity is affected by agricultural intensification may also differ substantially from countries in north-western Europe.

Resolution of inflammation is an active process driven by Specialized Pro-resolving Mediators (SPM) that derive from long chain n-3 and n-6 fatty acids. This study examined plasma SPM in relation to sex differences, lifestyle and a broad range cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in 978, 27-year olds from the Australian Raine Study.

Objectives: To assess how biomarkers indicating central nervous system insult (neurobiomarkers) vary in peripheral blood with exertional-heat stress from prolonged endurance exercise.
Design: Observational study of changes in neuron specific enolase (NSE), S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100β), Glial Fibrillary Acid Protein (GFAP) and Ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase isozyme L1 (UCHL1) at Brighton Marathon 2022.
Methods: In 38 marathoners with in-race core temperature (Tc) monitoring, exposure (High, Intermediate or Low) was classified by cumulative hyperthermia - calculated as area under curve of Time × Tc > 38 °C - and also by running duration (finishing time).
Objective: Women with gestational diabetes (GDM) have an increased risk of preeclampsia and postpartum diabetes. Inflammation associates with both GDM and preeclampsia. This study examined specialized proresolving mediators (SPM) that direct inflammation resolution and eicosanoids that are involved in inflammation, in relation to the development of preeclampsia and ongoing postpartum glucose intolerance in GDM.

In cohort studies we have shown cluster analysis identified a large sub-group of adolescents with multiple risk factors. This study examined if individuals classified at 'high-risk' by cluster analysis could also be identified by their Framingham risk scores.

Introduction: Dexamethasone is an antiemetic that is frequently administered before or after the induction of anesthesia for prevention and treatment of perioperative nausea and vomiting. Dexamethasone has anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects primarily via suppression of expression of inflammatory mediators. However, its effect on the eicosanoids and docosanoids that mediate the inflammatory response and inflammation resolution are unclear.

This controlled trial examined the effect of inspired oxygen on F-isoprostanes (F-IsoPs), isofurans (IsoFs), and specialized mediators of inflammation resolution (SPM) during knee replacement surgery. Patients received either 30% O (control = 21), 50% O ( = 20), or 80% O ( = 19) O, in a parallel design.

Background: Dexamethasone is commonly given as an antiemetic during surgical procedures. It has immunosuppressive effects and can affect key enzymes involved in the synthesis of specialised lipid mediators of inflammation resolution (SPM) that direct inflammation resolution and have anti-nociceptive actions. This study examined the effect of dexamethasone on plasma SPM, and the relationship between SPM and perceived pain in women undergoing surgery.

Purpose Of Review: To examine outstanding issues in the relationship of alcohol to hypertension. These include whether the increase in BP with alcohol is causally related, the nature of the relationship in women, the contribution of alcohol-related increases in BP to cardiovascular disease and the aetiology of alcohol-related hypertension.
Recent Findings: Intervention studies and Mendelian randomisation analyses confirm the alcohol-BP relationship is causal.

Background: Non-resolving inflammation associates with obesity and insulin resistance, and may be dependent on the balance of inflammatory substances and specialised pro-resolving mediators of inflammation (SPM) that act to halt the inflammatory response. This controlled trial examined the effect of weight loss on neutrophil synthesis of SPM in volunteers with the metabolic syndrome (MetS).
Methods: Volunteers with MetS (n = 42) were matched for age and gender and randomly assigned to a 12-wk weight loss program followed by 4-wk weight stabilization or a 16-wk weight maintenance program.
An apolipoprotein E () 4 genotype is the most important, common genetic determinant for Alzheimer disease (AD), and female carriers present with an increased risk compared with males. The study quantified cortical and hippocampal fatty acid and phospholipid profiles along with select eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)- and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-derived specialized proresolving mediators (SPMs) in 2-, 9-, and 18-mo-old and male and female mice. A 10% lower cortical DHA was evident in females at 18 mo compared with 2 mo, with no significant decrease in or males.
