The effects of oral dipyridamole on exercise performance and anginal symptoms were evaluated in 15 men with stable angina pectoris. In a double-blind, randomized, crossover design, patients received 75 mg of dipyridamole or placebo every 8 hours for 2 weeks in addition to their previously prescribed cardiac medications. Graded exercise tolerance testing was performed twice before randomization, at the end of each treatment period, and after single-blind placebo washout.

Columbia Hospital's variation of the JIT system to support its repetitive-type surgical procedures performed by the L&D and OR departments has proven to be the right system for this specialty care hospital to ensure that the right product at the right price is available at the right place and time. This system established by the cooperative efforts of the three partners involved (the hospital, manufacturer, and distributor) has been a win-win system for all. The manufacturer and distributor receive a profitable return for their products and services, and the hospital receives reimbursement for the products it utilizes to provide quality care to its ultimate customer, the patient.

This study was performed to evaluate the presence of angina pectoris, electrocardiographic changes and reversible thallium-201 defects resulting from 2 different levels of exercise in 19 patients with known coronary artery disease and evidence of exercise-induced ischemia. The exercise protocols consisted of a symptom-limited incremental exercise test (Bruce protocol) followed within 3 to 14 days by a submaximal, steady-state exercise test performed at 70% of the maximal heart rate achieved during the Bruce protocol. The presence and time of onset of angina and electrocardiographic changes (greater than or equal to 0.

We observed two patients on theophylline therapy with concomitant severe psoriasis and a two- to threefold greater theophylline clearance than that reported in healthy, nonsmoking adults. There were no factors known to induce theophylline clearance. In both cases, the induction of theophylline metabolism was relatively selective for the 1-methyluric acid pathway.

The clinical response to felodipine, in addition to a beta-blocker, was evaluated and compared with placebo in this double-blind cross-over study. Twenty patients with exertional angina pectoris completed the study. Felodipine reduced the number of angina attacks and the Glyceryl Trinitrate (GTN) consumption.

Eighteen patients with idiopathic hypertension were studied to assess the anti-hypertensive control, both at rest and during exercise of increasing doses of hydrochlorothiazide, metoprolol and a combination of hydrochlorothiazide and metoprolol. Each active treatment period was given for four weeks with an intervening four week placebo period, with assessments made at 2 to 4 hours and 22 to 24 hours following tablet intake. The results show that the resting systolic and diastolic values for all active treatment periods were significantly different from placebo.

Synthesis of enzymes of the 4-hydroxyphenylacetate meta-cleavage pathway was studied in Pseudomonas putida wild-type strain P23X1 (NCIB 9865) and mutant strains which had either structural or regulatory gene mutations. Induction studies with mutant strains each defective in an enzyme of the pathway showed that 4-hydroxyphenylacetate induced the hydroxylase and that 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetate induced the 2,3-oxygenase, aldehyde dehydrogenase, isomerase, decarboxylase, and hydratase. This showed that the hydroxylase structural gene does not exist in an operon that contains any other structural gene of this meta pathway.

Degradation of 2-hydroxy-5-carboxymethylmuconic semialdehyde, the ring fission product of the 4-hydroxyphenylacetate meta-cleavage pathway, by mutant strains P23X19 and P23X16 of Pseudomonas putida NCI B 9865 was studied. Both mutants were unable to grow on either 4-hydroxyphenylacetate of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetate. Cell extracts of P23X19, grown in the presence of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetate, degraded the ring fission product to a compound that accumulated and had maximum UV absorption at 300 nm, pH 7.

The effect of the cardioselective beta-adrenoreceptor blocking compound, metoprolol, was compared with methyldopa in the long-term management of hypertension. Thirty patients given metoprolol and twenty-six given methyldopa were treated for 2 years. The maximum dose of metoprolol was 200 mg twice daily (average 308 mg) and of methyldopa 1,000 mg twice daily (average 1,120 mg).

Measurements of salt spray were made weekly for 15 spring weeks with a grid of 50 traps in a 32 m longx24m wide plot of beach vegetation along the central California coast. The trap centers were 14 cm above the ground, the traps could swivel to continuously face the wind, and trap area (16 cm) was small in order to minimally affect wind flow. Regressions or analyses of variance of wind speed and direction, rainfall, tide level, plot topography, and plant distribution were performed against salt spray.

Young rhizome sprouts of the herbaceous perennial Jaumea carnosa were propagated from material collected in a salt marsh along the central California coast. The sprouts were transplanted to flats of sand sown with different densities of seeds of a representative glycophyte, Lolium perenne L. "Derby, turf type.

An inexpensive temperature-gradient bar and chamber for use in studies of seed germination and root growth is described. Aluminum troughs and a bar, surrounded by insulation and heated and cooled at their ends by water baths, form the floor of a chamber. A plexiglass top permits illumination by overhead light banks.
