MicroRNAs mediated regulation of glutathione peroxidase 7 expression and its changes during adipogenesis.

Glutathione peroxidase 7 (GPx7) acts as an intracellular stress sensor/transmitter and plays an important role in adipocyte differentiation and the prevention of obesity related pathologies. For this reason, finding the regulatory mechanisms that control GPx7 expression is of great importance. As microRNAs (miRNAs) could participate in the regulation of GPx7 expression, we studied the inhibition of GPx7 expression by four selected miRNAs with relation to obesity and adipogenesis.

The risk assessment of inorganic and organic pollutant levels in an urban area affected by intensive industry.

The city of Litvínov (North Bohemia, Czech Republic) is seriously affected by coal mining, coal processing, and intensive industrial activities. Within the urban area, the potential environmental hazard of risk elements (in soil and vegetation) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs, in soils) was estimated using selected environmental and human health hazard indices. In total, 24 sites were sampled, including the city center, residential areas, industrialized zone, and areas close to operating and/or abandoned coal mines.

High-fructose drinks affect microRNAs expression differently in lean and obese mice.

High fructose intake from soft drinks and sweets is assumed to have a negative impact on human health. Yet in spite of intensive research, the molecular mechanisms of these effects have not been fully elucidated yet, for example, the effect of high fructose intake could be different in normal and obese individuals. Four groups of mice were used in this study: control groups of lean mice and mice with obesity induced by a high-fat diet, then both of these groups with or without fructose administration in drinks.

Cardiotoxicity is a serious adverse reaction to cancer chemotherapy and may lead to critical heart damage. Imatinib mesylate (IMB), a selective tyrosine kinase inhibitor, is sometimes accompanied by severe cardiovascular complications. To minimize risk, early biomarkers of such complications are of utmost importance.

MicroRNAs in the diagnosis and prevention of drug-induced cardiotoxicity.

Drug-induced cardiotoxicity is a serious problem associated with the administration of many drugs. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been reported to be affected by drugs and other xenobiotics, and the potential of miRNAs as biomarkers and diagnostic tools has been considered. In recent years, an association of certain miRNAs with the cardiotoxicity of some drugs, namely anthracyclines, bevacizumab, cyclosporine A and isoprenaline, has already been found.

MicroRNAs as Potential Regulators of Glutathione Peroxidases Expression and Their Role in Obesity and Related Pathologies.

Glutathione peroxidases (GPxs) belong to the eight-member family of phylogenetically related enzymes with different cellular localization, but distinct antioxidant function. Several GPxs are important selenoproteins. Dysregulated GPx expression is connected with severe pathologies, including obesity and diabetes.
