Considering the growing number of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) producers in the world, knowing the influence of olive oils with different geographical origins on the characteristics of the final blend becomes an interesting goal. The present work is focused on commercial organic EVOO blends obtained by mixing multiple oils from different geographical origins. These blends have been studied by H-NMR spectroscopy supported by multivariate statistical analysis.

The objective of this study consists of being able to develop a precise, reliable, easy, cheap and quick method to identify and quantify the presence of pesticide metabolites and their parents in human urine. In order to reach our purpose we selected the pesticides and their metabolites with intended uses on permanent crops such as orchards and vineyard. The activity planning started with the identification of the target list carried out by UHPLC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS, succeeded by several tests oriented to determine the best sample treatment having recourse to instrumental analysis in the range 5-100 ng/mL.

According to Coldiretti, Italy still continues to hold the European Quality record in extra virgin olive oils with origin designation and protected geographical indication (PDO and PGI). To date, 46 Italian brands are recognized by the European Union: 42 PDO and 4 PGI (Tuscan PGI, Calabria PGI; Tuscia PGI and PGI Sicily). Specific regulations, introduced for these quality marks, include the designation of both the geographical areas and the plant varieties contributing to the composition of the olive oil.

In this work we report the results for estimating the measurement uncertainty (MU) following up the application of two different approaches, relatively the top-down procedure, by using proficiency test data. We have focused the estimation on the olive oil matrix. We used the analytical data obtained from five selected editions of the Proficiency Tests (PTs, from 2007 to 2011) on pesticide residues in olive oil to estimate the MU.

In the analytical analysis the measurement uncertainty is a quantitative indicator of the confidence describing the range around a reported or experimental result within which the true value can be expected. Several approaches can be used to estimate the measurement uncertainty associated to the analysis of pesticide residues: a) the top-down, the estimation can be referred to default values; b) the bottom-up the estimation is related to the uncertainty sources. Concerning the bottom-up approach, the following contributions have been investigated: weight of sample, calibration solutions, final volume of sample and intermediate repeatability studies.

A simple method for the determination of dimethyl fumarate (DMFu) in silica gel pouches has been developed. The gas chromatographic behaviour of DMFu was investigated; the instrumental method, based on EI mass spectrometry coupled with an Ion Trap Detector operating whether in full scan mode or in MS/MS mode was also investigated. A rapid and simple method for simultaneous analysis of four neonicotinoid insecticides including acetamiprid, imidacloprid, thiacloprid and thiamethoxam in fruit and vegetable matrices has been developed. For instance, ready-to-use cartridges filled with a macroporous diatomaceous material were used to extract in a single step insecticide residues with dichloromethane from aqueous-acetone extracts of fruits and vegetables. The eluate was evaporated, the residue redissolved with methanol and then analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry in the electrospray ionization (ESI) positive mode.

Edible portions of 12 marine organisms from several areas of the Adriatic Sea, Italy, were collected during Spring 1997 and analysed for 32 organochlorine pesticides residues and 27 polychlorobiphenyl congeners. Only eight organochlorine pesticides - hexachlorobenzene (HCB), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers, diphenyl-dichloro-trichloroethane (DDT) group, dieldrin - were determined at levels in the range <0.01-19.

The synthesis and characterization of a THF pendant, dimeric Mo cyclopentadienyl complex is reported and the structure characterized by NMR, FTIR, and UV-vis spectroscopies. The dimer was found to undergo metal-metal bond homolysis under either photochemical or electrochemical conditions to yield an odd-electron complex. Cyclic voltammetry under varying scan rate conditions from 25 to 10 000 mV/s demonstrates a dynamic equilibrium process that we assign to the formation of either an intramolecular 19-electron (18 + delta) complex or a bare 17-electron complex.

Disposable, ready-to-use cartridges filled with macroporous diatomaceous material are used to carry out a partition clean-up that, in a single step, is capable of transferring pesticide residues from aqueous acetone extracts into light petroleum-dichloromethane (75:25, v/v). This procedure takes the place of some functions (such as separatory-funnel partition, drying over anhydrous sodium sulphate and partial adsorption clean-up) usually performed by separate steps in classical schemes. Photolysis of complexes of the type M(2)(CO)(6)(RC(5)H(4))(2) (where M = W, Mo, Cr and R = H (Cp) or CH(3) (Cp')) leads to the production of short lived 17-electron radicals. Direct electrochemical characterization of these intermediates has been achieved using a technique known as photomodulated voltammetry (PMV). The results from PMV analysis are in excellent agreement with literature estimates for CpMo(CO)(3)(*) and CpCr(CO)(3)(*).

Algal extracts of Anabaena planctonica from Lake Mulargia in Italy were tested for toxins by mouse bioassay, the Microtox system, and GC-MS and HPLC chromatography. Anatoxin-a was identified by GC-MS after derivatization with pentafluorobenzyl bromide. Hepatotoxins were also present and are perhaps related to the microcystins present in other species of Anabaena.

Fatty acid profiles of six leptospira strains representative of genera, species, and serogroups within the family Leptospiraceae were determined by gas liquid chromatography (GLC) of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) derivatives. The influence of methodological and biological variables on FAME profiles of the same strain was tested. FAME profiles were sharply affected by the fatty acid composition of the culture medium but not by the growth phase.
