Plant trade and exchange for horticulture, recreation or research play a significant role in the dispersal of molluscs. Alien slugs and snails accidentally introduced into Europe have established rich communities in several countries, but although these introductions could have ecological and economic implications, mollusc xenodiversity in Italian botanical gardens, plant nurseries, and greenhouses has never been investigated. Facilities throughout the country were therefore visited between 2017 and 2023.

The aim of this work was to select non-brewing strains for the production of a fruit beer with raspberry. The in vitro tests and the wort fermentations allowed the selection of two sourdough strains, showing high maltose and maltotriose consumption, high ethanol production, and high viability.

Management of in-Amphora "Trebbiano Toscano" Wine Production: Selection of Indigenous Strains and Influence on the Phenolic and Sensory Profile.

The use of earthenware amphorae in winemaking can give wines unique attributes enhancing their typicity. Therefore, in this study, spontaneous and inoculated in-amphora fermentations of Trebbiano Toscano grape must were monitored to assess the strains occurring in each fermentation as well as the chemical characteristics of the wines. Strain typing via Interdelta analyses pointed out that the commercial starters did not dominate, showing 24% and 13% implantation percentages, and that 20 indigenous strains were present at different percentages, ranging from 2 to 20%, in inoculated and spontaneous fermentations.

Severe dysphagia after antireflux surgery: a rare case of esophageal hiatal stenosis.

Severe and persistent dysphagia (PD) due to a stenosis of the esophageal hiatus is a serious and rare complication after antireflux procedures. In the case report presented here, the treatment of dysphagia, which arose eight weeks after surgery and progressively worsened, required a new laparoscopic approach. The re-intervention undertaken allowed us to identify the cause of the dysphagia, a tight hiatal stenosis, and to treat it successfully.

Introduction: In the WHO European Region, endemic transmission of measles and rubella had been interrupted by 37 and 42 of the 53 member states (MSs), respectively, by 2018. Sixteen MSs are still endemic for measles, 11 for rubella and nine for both diseases, the latter including Italy. Elimination is documented by each country's National Verification Committee (NVC) through an annual status update (ASU).

Background Adn Aim: Healthcare workers and Biomedical students are continuously exposed to biological risk in their clinical practice. The objective of this study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of an Italian questionnaire on the knowledge and perception of biological risk in Biomedical students at the beginning of their professional training.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil Quality as Affected by Yeast Species Occurring in the Extraction Process.

In extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) extraction process, the occurrence of yeasts that could affect the quality of olive oil was demonstrated. Therefore, in this work, at first, the yeasts occurring during different extractive processes carried out in a Tuscany oil mill, at the beginning, in the middle, and the end of the harvesting in the same crop season, were quantified. Then, possible effects on quality of EVOO caused by the predominant yeast species, possessing specific enzymatic activities, were evaluated.

Prevalence survey of healthcare-associated infections in a large teaching hospital.

Background: Healthcare-associated infection (HAI) is the most frequent adverse event in healthcare settings. It is associated with increased mortality and antimicrobial resistance, leading to prolonged hospital stays and consistent financial loss for healthcare systems. The objective of this study was to estimate the burden of HAIs and antimicrobial use in the Teaching Hospital Policlinico Umberto I (THPUI) of Rome and to identify the most critical areas for intervention.

Multimodal surveillance of healthcare associated infections in an intensive care unit of a large teaching hospital.

Background: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), or nosocomial infections, represent a significant burden in terms of mortality, morbidity, length of stay and costs for patients hospitalized in intensive care units (ICUs). Surveillance systems are recommended by national and international institutions to gather data on HAIs in order to develop and evaluate interventions that reduce the risk of HAIs.

Study Design: Here we describe the methodology and the results of the surveillance system implemented in the ICU of the Policlinico Umberto I, a large teaching hospital in Rome, from April 2016 to October 2018.
