(1) Background: Alternative antibiotics are needed to treat infective endocarditis (IE) caused by non-/non- enterococci; we aimed to assess the in vitro activity of ampicillin plus ceftriaxone (AMP + CTR) against these enterococci and to describe its clinical efficacy in IE cases. (2) Methods: Time-kill curves with standard (ISI) and high (IHI) inocula were performed to test isolates [3 (ECAS) and 1 (EGALL)] and non- isolates [1 (EDUR), 1 (EHIR) and 1 (ERAF)]. The narrative literature review of IE cases treated with AMP + CTR was analyzed alongside three study cases.

During the past 6 decades, there have been numerous changes in prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE), currently affecting an older population and increasing in incidence in patients with transcatheter-implanted valves. Significant microbiologic (molecular biology) and imaging diagnostic (fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography) advances have been incorporated into the 2023 Duke-International Society for Cardiovascular Infectious Diseases infective endocarditis diagnostic criteria, thus increasing the diagnostic sensitivity for PVE without sacrificing specificity in validation studies. PVE is a life-threatening disease requiring management by multidisciplinary endocarditis teams in cardiac centers to improve outcomes.

Background: The optimal cardiovascular assessment of liver transplant (LT) candidates is unclear. We aimed to evaluate the performance of CT-based coronary tests (coronary artery calcium score [CACS] and coronary CT angiography [CCTA]) and a modification of the CAD-LT score (mCAD-LT, excluding family history of CAD) to diagnose significant coronary artery disease (CAD) before LT and predict the incidence of post-LT cardiovascular events (CVE).

Methods: We retrospectively analysed a single-centre cohort of LT candidates who underwent non-invasive tests; invasive coronary angiography (ICA) was performed depending on the results of non-invasive tests.

Biliary-pattern injury in the liver (eg, duct injury, ductular reaction, cholestasis) can occur in several conditions, including primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), large duct obstruction (LDO), and drug-induced liver injury (DILI). While the histologic changes in these conditions have been individually well described, distinguishing among them remains often challenging, particularly when biopsy samples are limited in size, robust clinical information is unavailable, and/or the pathologist does not feel confident in evaluating liver disease. This study evaluated histologic features that could aid the diagnosis of biliary-pattern injury on biopsy.

Objectives: Surgical repair remains the best treatment for severe primary mitral regurgitation (MR). Minimally invasive mitral valve surgery is being increasingly performed, but there is a lack of solid evidence comparing thoracoscopic with conventional surgery. Our objective was to compare outcomes of both approaches for repair of leaflet prolapse.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on assessing the effectiveness of [18F]FDG-PET/CT imaging in diagnosing infections related to cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs), aiming to clarify its role compared to traditional methods like transesophageal echocardiography (TEE).
  • Results showed that [18F]FDG-PET/CT had a high specificity (100%) and a sensitivity of 85% for detecting infections, improving the diagnosis of systemic infections when used alongside TEE.
  • The findings suggest that [18F]FDG-PET/CT can help distinguish between local and systemic infections based on uptake in spleen and bone marrow, and it may assist in follow-up care for patients when device removal isn't possible

Objectives: The role of colorectal neoplasms (CRN) as a common potential source of recurrent subsp. (SGG) and (EF) endocarditis remains unstudied. We aimed to investigate what proportion of episodes of recurrent endocarditis are caused by a succession of SGG and EF, or vice versa, and to assess the role of a colonic source in such recurrent episodes.

Intracardiac metastasis of cervical squamous cell carcinoma (C-SCC) is rare, with historically poor long-term survival. We report the case of a 55-year-old woman with prior metastatic C-SCC who was found to have a right ventricular mass causing functional pulmonic stenosis and multiple pulmonary emboli 19 months after her initial diagnosis. She underwent surgical resection to prevent further embolization and heart failure.

Postmortem normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) is a rising preservation strategy in controlled donation after circulatory determination of death (cDCD). Herein, we present results for cDCD liver transplants performed in Spain 2012-2019, with outcomes evaluated through December 31, 2020. Results were analyzed retrospectively and according to recovery technique (abdominal NRP [A-NRP] or standard rapid recovery [SRR]).

and species are fastidious organisms, representing the causative agents of ∼1% to 3% of cases of infective endocarditis (IE). Little is known about the optimal antibiotic treatment for these species, and daptomycin has been suggested as a therapeutic option. We describe the antimicrobial profiles of and IE isolates, investigate high-level daptomycin resistance (HLDR) development, and evaluate daptomycin activity in combination therapy.

Background: Surgical stabilization of the airway through tracheobronchoplasty (TBP) is the current treatment modality for patients with severe symptomatic excessive dynamic airway collapse. However, TBP is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Bronchoscopic treatment of the posterior membrane using argon plasma coagulation (APC) may be a safer alternative to TBP in highly selected patients.
