This study examined the effects of the routine assessment of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) on the overall survival of adult patients with cancer. We included clinical trials and observational studies with a control group that compared PRO monitoring interventions in cancer clinical practice to usual care. The Cochrane risk-of-bias tools were used.

Evidence shows that a substantial proportion of patients with COVID-19 experiences long-term consequences of the disease, but the predisposing factors are poorly understood. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify factors present during COVID-19 hospitalization associated with an increased risk of exhibiting new or persisting symptoms (Post-COVID-19 Syndrome, PCS). MedLine and WebOfScience were last searched on 30 September 2021.

Background And Purpose: Public campaigns to increase stroke preparedness have been tested in different contexts, showing contradictory results. We evaluated the effectiveness of a stroke campaign, designed specifically for the Italian population in reducing prehospital delay.

Methods: According to an SW-RCT (Stepped-Wedge Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial) design, the campaign was launched in 4 provinces in the northern part of the region Emilia Romagna at 3-month intervals in randomized sequence.

Background: Systematic reviews call for well-designed trials with clearly described intervention components to support the effectiveness of educational campaigns to reduce patient delay in stroke presentation. We herein describe the systematic development process of a campaign aimed to increase stroke awareness and preparedness.

Methods: Campaign development followed Intervention Mapping (IM), a theory- and evidence-based tool, and was articulated in two phases: needs assessment and intervention development.

Background: Assessing the level of public stroke awareness is a prerequisite for development of community educational campaigns aimed at reducing prehospital delay of stroke patients. The Stroke Action Test (STAT) is a validated instrument specifically developed in the United States with the objective to assess the public's readiness to respond to stroke. Our purpose was to perform the cross-cultural adaptation of the original version of STAT to be applied to the Italian population.

Background: Over 20% of hospital bed use is inappropriate, implying a waste of resources and the increase of patient iatrogenic risk.

Methods: This is a cluster, pragmatic, randomised controlled trial, carried out in a large University Hospital of Northern Italy, aiming to evaluate the effect of a strategy to reduce unnecessary hospital days. The primary outcome was the percentage of patient-days compatible with discharge.

Background: Question Prompt Lists (QPLs) have proven very effective in encouraging cancer patients to ask questions, allowing them to take up a more active role during visits with the oncologist. As no such tool has yet been validated for Italian-speaking users, we carried out the cross-cultural adaptation and evaluation of an existing Australian Question Prompt List.

Methods: Cross-cultural adaptation was performed in accordance with the five steps described by Guillemin and Beaton.

Background: Tobacco smoking, alcohol abuse, and high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) are risk factors in the etiology of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs). The TP53 polymorphism, in which an arginine (R) is changed to proline (P) at codon 72, is functionally significant and could therefore be a predisposing genetic defect.

Methods: The aim of the study was to investigate the role of codon 72 polymorphism by means of double gradient-denaturing gel electrophoresis in 77 oropharyngeal SCC patients including 33 TP53 mutated and 16 HPV-16-positive cases.

Epithelial ovarian carcinoma (EOC) remains a highly lethal malignancy. Despite the progress in surgical and therapeutic strategies, resistance to chemotherapy is still a major concern. Cytotoxic therapies mediate killing of cancer cells by activating the intrinsic mitochondrial apoptotic pathway, and p53 status is a key factor in determining the efficacy of apoptotic signaling.

Purpose: The methylation status of hMLH1, CDKN2A, and MGMT was investigated in a panel of synchronous cancers of the ovary and endometrium, fulfilling the clinicopathologic criteria for independent primary tumors to define the possible role of epigenetic mechanisms in the development of these cancers.

Experimental Design: Bisulfite-converted DNA from 31 tumors (13 endometrial and 18 ovarian carcinomas) and from matched normal tissue of 13 patients was analyzed by a methylation-specific PCR assay at the CpG-rich 5' regions of all three genes. In all tumors, we also investigated the presence of microsatellite instability and hMLH1 immunohistochemical expression in relation to hMLH1 hypermethylation status.
