Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder. The primary pathological features of PD include the presence of α-synuclein aggregates and Lewy bodies, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation. Recently, omega-3 fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs) have been under investigation as a preventive and/or therapeutic strategy for PD, primarily owing to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Spontaneous intracranial hypotension is a condition resulting from cerebrospinal fluid leaks at the spinal level that disrupt the regulation of intracranial pressure. This disorder is an uncommon cause of debilitating headaches but can have variable clinical manifestations, which contributes to delayed diagnosis and potentially severe consequences. The standard treatment consists of conservative measures such as bed rest, hydration, and a pharmacological approach with paracetamol, caffeine, ergotamine, and dexamethasone.

Backgrounds: Restrictions in movement and closure of borders imposed by the Sars-Cov- 2 worldwide pandemic have affected the global illicit drug market, including cocaine trafficking. In this scenario, comparing cutting agents added to the cocaine and the drug purity are valuable strategies to understand how the drug trade has been impacted by the pandemic.

Methods: In this work, 204 cocaine salt materials seized in the Brazilian Federal District, before (2019) and during COVID-19 pandemics (2020) were analyzed by two analytical techniques: gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).

Emergency Contraception (EC) is available in Brazil since 1996, when it was adopted as one if the family planning strategies and, in 1998, for use in services assisting victims of sexual violence. In the country, its use is regulated by guidelines. Its access through SUS (Unified Health System), however, does not seem to occur in a standardized manner.

Although rare, acute pulmonary edema is the most common cause of death in pregnant women with severe hypertension. The authors report a case involving a pregnant woman at 36 weeks of gestation with preeclampsia, who exhibited pulmonary edema and required immediate cesarean delivery. The patient had type 1 respiratory failure and needed supplemental oxygenation with a Venturi mask.

Article Synopsis
  • Glioblastoma (GB) is a highly lethal brain cancer, with patients typically surviving only 15-18 months after diagnosis, underlining the urgent need for effective biomarkers for treatment and monitoring.
  • The study examined proteins MMP-2, MMP-9, YKL40, and VEGFA in GB patients, finding that high VEGFA levels were linked to better progression-free survival following treatment with bevacizumab, making it a potential biomarker for response to this therapy.
  • Conversely, VEGFA didn’t correlate with outcomes from another treatment, temozolomide, while YKL40 also showed some relevance to bevacizumab treatment effectiveness, emphasizing the importance of researching protein expressions in GB for future clinical

  • Cancer is a major global health issue, and natural anticancer agents can provide effective alternatives to traditional therapies like chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
  • The study focused on a specific carbohydrate polymer from a mutant organism that previously showed strong antitumor effects by inducing cell death in tumor cells.
  • Variants of this polymer were developed and tested, revealing that higher molecular mass and reduced peptide content led to improved anticancer activity and reduced tumor growth in experiments, highlighting the potential for developing customized treatments from natural sources.

Introduction: It is essential to strengthen the treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) to break the chain of transmission. The drug used worldwide for the treatment of LTBI is Isoniazid. A clinical trial conducted in Brazil has demonstrated the bioequivalence of Isoniazid in the 300 mg formulation with 3 tablets in the 100 mg formulation.

Unlabelled: Institutionalization has been associated with social isolation, psychological and cognitive changes, and decreased levels of physical activity in older adults.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of dementia, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and functional dependence in older adults dwelling in two different Brazilian long-term care facilities (LTCFs).

Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with 185 older people of both sexes, aged 60 years or over, residing in two LTCFs in the city of Montes Claros-MG, Brazil.

The development of stimuli-sensitive drug delivery systems is a very attractive area of current research in cancer therapy. The deep knowledge on the microenvironment of tumors has supported the progress of nanosystems' ability for controlled and local fusion as well as drug release. Temperature and pH are two of the most promising triggers in the development of sensitive formulations to improve the efficacy of anticancer agents.

Introduction: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is considered one of the biggest health challenges of the 21st century. It has both social and economic consequences; therefore, timely review of public health policies that have been designed to manage AMR is essential. Brazil too has developed and implemented various polices for the prevention and control of AMR.

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic heavy metal that can become available to the environment from a variety of sources. The thermal transformation of organic residues into biochar can be a sustainable way to reduce cadmium environmental availability and, at the same time, a waste management solution. We studied sixteen biochars in two versions: unaged and aged with hydrogen peroxide (HO), regarding their Cd retention capacity.

Article Synopsis
  • Around 5-7% of pregnant women experience hypertension and may require medication, but there hasn't been enough research on how drug-related issues affect their health after childbirth, especially for those with a history of preeclampsia.
  • This study examined 600 postpartum women diagnosed with preeclampsia in Brazil to see how drug-related problems (such as missed medications or lack of prescriptions) impacted their hospital stay and recovery.
  • Results showed that women with drug-related problems had a longer average hospital stay (5.4 days) compared to those without such issues (4.4 days), indicating that these problems can hinder recovery after labor.

  • The study aimed to assess how viral load and lymphocyte counts affect the survival of HIV-positive patients with oral Kaposi's sarcoma.
  • A review of 31 cases from Brazil revealed key survival factors, including treatment, high viral load, and low CD4 counts.
  • The findings indicate that better treatment and higher CD4 counts can improve survival rates in these patients.

Lipid nanocarriers (LNs), for example nanoemulsions (NE), are an emerging tool for drug delivery due to their ability to incorporate drugs, protect the drug from degradation, improve bioavailability, and control release. Although LNs are widely studied and applied, especially in the pharmaceutical field, knowledge about their toxicity is scarce. Moreover, the majority of studies focus on their efficiency rather than safety.

In cases of septic shock, high quality blood cultures are essential for identifying the causative agent and adapting the antibiotic treatment. Student nurses are relatively unfamiliar with recent guidelines on collecting blood cultures. Improving how they are taught during initial training, a key moment for the learning of best care practices, should help to optimise the global management of septic shock.

In 2016, the International Consensus Conference 'Sepsis-3' highlighted the value of Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) and Quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA) scores in addition to medical and paramedical clinical reasoning to assess severity and the risk of mortality. The option of using qSOFA scores in healthcare services underlines the important role of nurses in the early detection of sepsis with a risk of unfavourable outcome, raising hopes of reducing the associated mortality.
