Unlabelled: Current research on elderly patients with hip fractures often neglects specific subtypes, either grouping all fracture types or overlooking them entirely. By categorizing elderly patients based on fracture subtypes, we observed diverse baseline characteristics but found no discrepancies in measured outcomes. This emphasizes the need for caution in future research dealing with different or broader measured outcomes that were not covered by the scope of this research.

Introduction: Tibiotalocalcaneal (TTC) nailing without joint preparation has been indicated as an alternative to open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in the treatment of unstable fragility ankle fractures. We hypothesized that primary hindfoot nailing without joint preparation, and immediate weight bearing can provide a safe and effective treatment for unstable fragility fractures of the ankle compared to ORIF.

Methods: A retrospectively single-center cohort was reviewed for all surgically treated ankle fractures in patients aged 75 years and older between 2016 and 2021.

One of the immune responses desired to be achieved by SARS-CoV-2 vaccination is to create neutralizing antibodies (nAbs), thus preventing the development and spread of infection. The aim of this study was to investigate the seropositivity rate, anti-spike antibody levels, and neutralizing capacity of these antibodies against wild type (WT) and alpha variants in serum samples of individuals who had been naturally infected or vaccinated with CoronaVac®. Total anti-spike antibody levels were determined in all samples.

Background: COVID-19 is a disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Rigorous detection and treatment strategies against SARS-CoV-2 have become very challenging due to continuous evolutions to the viral genome. Therefore, careful genomic analysis is sorely needed to understand transmission, the cellular mechanism of pathogenicity, and the development of vaccines or drugs.

In recent years, with the increase of carbapenem resistance in Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Enterobacterales species, the use of colistin in treatment has gradually increased. Since the broth microdilution method which is recommended as a reference method in colistin susceptibility tests, is laborious and expensive and other susceptibility tests do not give reliable results, all these cause laboratories to search for new methods for the determination of colistin susceptibility testing. In this study, it was aimed to compare the broth microdilution method which is the reference method with the colistin broth disc elution and rapid resapolymyxin NP tests for the determination of the susceptibility of colistin in Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Enterobacterales species which are common healthcare-associated infection agents.

In the co-bonding of thermoset and thermoplastic polymers, the interdiffusion of the polymers results in the formation of an interphase between them. Understanding the factors influencing the interdiffusion and the resulting interphase is crucial in order to optimize the mechanical performance of the bond. Herein, for the first time, the effect of the initiator concentration of the thermoset resin-initiator mixture on the interphase thickness of co-bonded thermoset-thermoplastic polymers is investigated.

The wind energy sector is growing rapidly. Wind turbines are increasing in size, leading to higher tip velocities. The leading edges of the blades interact with rain droplets, causing erosion damage over time.

Pultruded fiber-reinforced polymer composites are susceptible to microstructural nonuniformity such as variability in fiber volume fraction (Vf), which can have a profound effect on process-induced residual stress. Until now, this effect of non-uniform Vf distribution has been hardly addressed in the process models. In the present study, we characterized the Vf distribution and accompanying nonuniformity in a unidirectional fiber-reinforced pultruded profile using optical light microscopy.

Mosaic loss of chromosome Y (mLOY) in leukocytes has attracted much attention as an emerging biomarker of aging and aging-related diseases. We evaluated the usefulness of saliva for mLOY analysis and showed that saliva-derived mLOY is significantly associated with aging and increased physical activity, but not with smoking. While these data support the robust association between saliva-derived mLOY and aging, caution is required when comparing data from saliva-derived and blood-derived mLOY.

Co-bonding is an effective joining method for fiber-reinforced composites in which a prefabricated part bonds with a thermoset resin during the curing process. Manufacturing of co-bonded thermoset-thermoplastic hybrid composites is a challenging task due to the complexities of the interdiffusion of reactive thermoset resin and thermoplastic polymer at the interface between two plies. Herein, the interphase properties of co-bonded acrylonitrile butadiene styrene thermoplastic to unsaturated polyester thermoset are investigated for different processing conditions.

Advanced thermoplastic composites manufacturing using laser assisted tape placement or winding (LATP/LATW) is a challenging task as monitoring and predicting nip point (bonding) temperature are difficult especially on curved surfaces. A comprehensive numerical analysis of the heat flux and temperature distribution near the nip point is carried out in this paper for helical winding of fiber reinforced thermoplastic tapes on a cylindrically shaped mandrel. An optical ray-tracing technique is coupled with a numerical heat transfer model in the process simulation tool.

Colistin became the primary treatment option for Acinetobacters that had developed a high rate of resistance to carbapenems which were the first-line therapy in the past, and now Acinetobacters become resistant to nearly all antibiotics. Because of the resistance potential to colistin and the concerns about toxicity, especially for high doses, colistin combination therapies are preferred nowadays. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether combinations of colistin with meropenem, sulbactam, fosfomycin, vancomycin, and minocycline are synergic or not and to determine minocycline susceptibility rate, which is not in use in our country.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare in vitro fracture strengths (FSs) of metal- and fiber-reinforced frameworks of resin-bonded bridges and to evaluate stress distribution with finite element analysis (FEA).

Materials And Methods: Totally 80 extracted maxillary central and maxillary canine teeth were used for in vitro part of this study as two groups; metal-reinforced framework (n = 20) [(metal-supported resin-bonded bridge (MR-RB)] and fiber-reinforced frameworks (n = 20) [fiber-reinforced resin-bonded bridge (FR-RB) were prepared for three unit resin-bonded bridges. All bridges were loaded from lateral pontic at 1 mm/min crosshead speed and fracture values were recorded.

Human leukemia Jurkat T cells were analyzed for apoptosis and cell cycle by flow cytometry, using the Annexin V/propidium iodide (PI) standard assay, and a simple PI staining in Triton X-100/digitonin-enriched PI/RNase buffer, respectively. Cells treated with doxorubicin or menadione displayed a very strong correlation between the apoptotic cell fraction measured by the Annexin V/PI assay, and the weight of a secondary cell population that emerged on the forward scatter (FS)/PI plot, as well as on the side scatter (SS)/PI and FL1/PI plots generated from parallel cell cycle recordings. In both cases, the Pearson correlation coefficients were >0.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to assess the efficacy and safety of tolvaptan for severe hyponatremia (SH) in hypervolemic heart failure (HF) patients within daily clinical practice.

Methods: We restrospectively reviewed our database on tolvaptan as an add-on treatment in hypervolemic patients admitted to our clinic due to deterioration of HF and having hyponatremia resistant to standard therapy. Severe hyponatremia was defined as serum sodium concentration ≤125 mEq/L.

The increased usage of fiber reinforced polymer composites in load bearing applications requires a detailed understanding of the process induced residual stresses and their effect on the shape distortions. This is utmost necessary in order to have more reliable composite manufacturing since the residual stresses alter the internal stress level of the composite part during the service life and the residual shape distortions may lead to not meeting the desired geometrical tolerances. The occurrence of residual stresses during the manufacturing process inherently contains diverse interactions between the involved physical phenomena mainly related to material flow, heat transfer and polymerization or crystallization.
