Background: In tandem with the rise in numbers of older adults in the general population, more people with schizophrenia (PwS) are also living longer. This vulnerable population has several trajectories of ageing driven by a number of social determinants of health, including the experience of loneliness and they may be more at risk of experiencing loneliness.

Aim: This study aimed to examine demographic, psychosocial and clinical variables and their relative contribution to the loneliness of older PwS (OPwS) in a large New Zealand community sample.

A decision support system for the detection of cutaneous fungal infections using artificial intelligence.

Cutaneous fungal infections are one of the most common skin conditions, hence, the burden of determining fungal elements upon microscopic examination with periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and Gomori methenamine silver (GMS) stains, is very time consuming. Despite some morphological variability posing challenges to training artificial intelligence (AI)-based solutions, these structures are favored potential targets, enabling the recruitment of promising AI-based technologies. Herein, we present a novel AI solution for identifying skin fungal infections, potentially providing a decision support system for pathologists.

A genetic circuit on a single DNA molecule as an autonomous dissipative nanodevice.

Realizing genetic circuits on single DNA molecules as self-encoded dissipative nanodevices is a major step toward miniaturization of autonomous biological systems. A circuit operating on a single DNA implies that genetically encoded proteins localize during coupled transcription-translation to DNA, but a single-molecule measurement demonstrating this has remained a challenge. Here, we use a genetically encoded fluorescent reporter system with improved temporal resolution and observe the synthesis of individual proteins tethered to a DNA molecule by transient complexes of RNA polymerase, messenger RNA, and ribosome.

Sexual Assault in Older-Age Adults: Criminal Justice Response in New Zealand.

There is growing recognition that older persons, both male and female, may experience sexual assault. One clearly identified gap in the body of scientific literature is examination of the criminal justice response for older adults who have been sexually assaulted. This retrospective age-group comparative data analysis examines publicly available population and police statistics for 2018 to describe rates (per 100,000) of reported sexual assault across adult age categories (young adult,  = 748; adult,  = 1,478; middle age,  = 290; older adult,  = 58) and compare (using Chi-square bivariate analysis) the criminal justice response to sexual assault for these adult age categories in New Zealand (NZ).

Optically detected magnetic resonance spectroscopic analyses on the role of magnetic ions in colloidal nanocrystals.

Incorporating magnetic ions into semiconductor nanocrystals has emerged as a prominent research field for manipulating spin-related properties. The magnetic ions within the host semiconductor experience spin-exchange interactions with photogenerated carriers and are often involved in the recombination routes, stimulating special magneto-optical effects. The current account presents a comparative study, emphasizing the impact of engineering nanostructures and selecting magnetic ions in shaping carrier-magnetic ion interactions.

From Microstates to Macrostates in the Conformational Dynamics of GroEL: A Single-Molecule Förster Resonance Energy Transfer Study.

The chaperonin GroEL is a multisubunit molecular machine that assists in protein folding in the cytosol. Past studies have shown that GroEL undergoes large allosteric conformational changes during its reaction cycle. Here, we report single-molecule Förster resonance energy transfer measurements that directly probe the conformational transitions of one subunit within GroEL and its single-ring variant under equilibrium conditions.

A Novel Device for Suprachoroidal Drug Delivery to Retina: Evaluation in Nonhuman Primates.

Purpose: Evaluation of distribution and tolerance of suprachoroidal injection of indocyanine green (ICG) in nonhuman primates (NHPs) using a novel suprachoroidal (SC) delivery technology.

Methods: Three live and three euthanized African green monkeys were injected with 150 or 200 µL ICG/eye into the SC space of both eyes, 2.5 mm posterior to the limbus in the inferior quadrant, utilizing a novel SC injector.

The 2023 New Zealand psychiatry of old age services and workforce survey.

Objective: The primary objective was to survey the Psychiatry of Old Age (POA) service resources in New Zealand: number of psychiatrists, inpatient beds, and community psychogeriatric beds. A secondary objective was to compare the POA service resources reported by frontline clinicians with official government data.

Methods: The New Zealand Branch of Faculty of POA collected information from a POA representative in each of the 20 districts, along with official government data.

Can clozapine be used by dental practitioners to increase salivary flow in patients with dry mouth? A scoping review.

Objectives: Clozapine, an atypical antipsychotic used to treat people with schizophrenia, has been proposed as a possible treatment for salivary gland hypofunction. This scoping review investigated the available literature on clozapine's impact on salivary flow, in order to determine whether it could be used by dental practitioners in low doses as a treatment for dry mouth.

Data Sources: An electronic search was completed using Ovid MEDLINE (1996 to Nov 2021).

Aging of persons with schizophrenia: analysis of a national dataset.

Objectives: The number of older adults suffering from schizophrenia is increasing. Despite this, less than 1% of published studies about schizophrenia focus on those older than 65 years. Research indicates these individuals may age differently from the general population due to lifestyle, medication factors, and effects of the disease itself.

Older adults with schizophrenia and dementia: Analysis of a national dataset.

Objectives: Individuals with schizophrenia develop dementia in late life at higher rates than the general population. This is arguably explained by high rates of chronic medical conditions and exposure to antipsychotic medications. This risk has implications for public health.

Placental abnormalities have been sporadically implicated as a source of developmental heart defects. Yet it remains unknown how often the placenta is at the root of congenital heart defects (CHDs), and what the cellular mechanisms are that underpin this connection. Here, we selected three mouse mutant lines, Atp11a, Smg9 and Ssr2, that presented with placental and heart defects in a recent phenotyping screen, resulting in embryonic lethality.

Background: Modifiable risk factors affect 40% of dementia risk thus creating an opportunity for prevention or delay. The risk factor life-course model of dementia prevention by the Lancet Commission has yet to be tested in the general populations. We aimed to assess the model's assumptions in a large national dataset of older adults assessed for support services.

Copper-doped II-VI and copper-based I-III-VI colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) have been at the forefront of interest in nanocrystals over the past decade, attributable to their optically activated copper states. However, the related recombination mechanisms are still unclear. The current work elaborates on recombination processes in such materials by following the spin properties of copper-doped CdSe/CdS (Cu@CdSe/CdS) and of CuInS and CuInS/(CdS, ZnS) core/shell CQDs using continuous-wave and time-resolved optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) spectroscopy.
