Despite improved surveillance capacities and WHO recommendations for subdistrict analysis, routine epidemic surveillance of acute bacterial meningitis in the African meningitis belt remains largely limited to the district level. We evaluated the appropriateness and performance of analyses at higher spatial resolution. We used suspected meningitis surveillance data at health centre (HC) resolution from Burkina Faso from 14 health districts spanning years 2004-2014 and analysed them using spatio-temporal statistics and generative models.

Sex influence on muscle synergies in a ballistic force-velocity test during the delayed recovery phase after a graded endurance run.

The acute and delayed phases of the functional recovery pattern after running exercise have been studied mainly in men. However, it seems that women are less fatigable and/or recover faster than men, at least when tested in isometric condition. After a 20 km graded running race, the influence of sex on the delayed phase of recovery at 2-4 days was studied using a horizontal ballistic force-velocity test.

Superconductor-insulator transitions in three-dimensional indium-oxide at high pressures.

A real-world implementation of a nationwide, long-term monitoring program to assess the impact of agrochemicals and agricultural practices on biodiversity.

Biodiversity has undergone a major decline throughout recent decades, particularly in farmland. Agricultural practices are recognized to be an important pressure on farmland biodiversity, and pesticides are suspected to be one of the main causes of this decline in biodiversity. As part of the national plan for reduction of pesticides use (Ecophyto), the French ministry of agriculture launched the 500 ENI (nonintended effects) monitoring program in 2012 in order to assess the unintended effects of agricultural practices, including pesticide use, on biodiversity represented by several taxonomic groups of interest for farmers.

Superconductor-insulator transition in two-dimensional indium-indium-oxide composite.

The magnetic-field-tuned superconductor-to-insulator transition was studied in a hybrid system of superconducting indium islands, deposited on an indium oxide (InOx) thin film, which exhibits global superconductivity at low magnetic fields. Vacuum annealing was used to tune the conductivity of the InOx film, thereby tuning the inergrain coupling and the nature of the transition. The hybrid system exhibits a "giant" magnetoresistance above the magnetic-field-tuned superconductor-to-insulator transition (H-SIT), with critical behavior similar to that of uniform InOx films but at much lower magnetic fields, that manifests the duality between Cooper pairs and vortices.

Hierarchizing Determinants of Sick Leave: Insights From a Survey on Health and Well-being at the Workplace.

Objective: We hierarchized a range of individual and occupational factors impacting the occurrence of very short (1-3 days), short (4 days to 1 month), or long-term (more than a month) sick leave spells.

Methods: Data were collected from a repeated cross-sectional survey conducted in the French private sector over the period 2011 to 2017. Fifty one sick leave determinants were ranked using a conditional random forest approach.

Players' names, positions, and number of selections were collected for all XV de France's games (1906-2014). Every team's percentage of renewal of workforce was calculated for backs and forwards.

Climate change and human health: what are the research trends? A scoping review protocol.

Introduction: For 28 years, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has been assessing the potential risks associated with anthropogenic climate change. Although interest in climate change and health is growing, the implications arising from their interaction remain understudied. Generating a greater understanding of the health impacts of climate change could be key step in inciting some of the changes necessary to decelerate global warming.

Public Health and Epidemiology Informatics.

Objectives: The aim of this manuscript is to provide a brief overview of the scientific challenges that should be addressed in order to unlock the full potential of using data from a general point of view, as well as to present some ideas that could help answer specific needs for data understanding in the field of health sciences and epidemiology.

Empirically derived algorithm for performance validity assessment embedded in a widely used neuropsychological battery: Validation among TBI patients in litigation.

Introduction: Validity of neuropsychological assessment depends, inter alia, on the cooperation of the examinee, requiring separate assessment. Stand-alone tests devised for detecting negative response bias (NRB) are exposed to potential threats to their validity. In this study, an algorithm was developed for assessing NRB within a standardized, computerized neuropsychological battery (NeuroTrax), making it difficult to detect and circumvent.

The role of steric interactions in dispersion of carbon nanotubes by poly(3-alkyl thiophenes) in organic solvents.

The dispersion mechanism of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in organic solutions of poly(3-alkyl thiophenes, P3ATs) was examined in a study that combines experimental investigation of the dispersion mechanism and molecular theory calculations of the effective intertube potential for polymer wrapped CNTs. The minimal polymer concentration required for dispersion of CNT served as a comparative measure of the efficiency of P3AT derivatives that differ in the length of the alkyl side chains or the regiochemistry of the monomers in three solvents: 1,2 and 1,3 dichlorobenzene and chloroform. While previous studies focused on the adsorption mechanism of P3ATs onto SWNT, we find that the dispersing efficiency depends not only on the stacking of the polymer backbone onto the CNT ("wrapping"), but also on the steric repulsion among the side chains of adsorbed P3ATs.

Salting-in effect in organic dispersions of poly(3-hexyl thiophene)-carbon-nanotubes.

Addition of small concentrations of different inorganic salts to THF solutions of poly(3-hexyl thiophene), which contain non-dispersed powder of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWNTs), was found to "salt-in" the precipitated tubes leading to the formation of a stable dispersion of the MWNTs. This effect seems to result from a salt-induced conformational change of polymer chains adsorbed onto the CNTs, resulting in the onset of (entropic) steric repulsion among polymer-decorated chains.

Drug sales data analysis for outbreak detection of infectious diseases: a systematic literature review.

Background: This systematic literature review aimed to summarize evidence for the added value of drug sales data analysis for the surveillance of infectious diseases.

Methods: A search for relevant publications was conducted in Pubmed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library, African Index Medicus and Lilacs databases. Retrieved studies were evaluated in terms of objectives, diseases studied, data sources, methodologies and performance for real-time surveillance.

Response inhibition in a subclinical obsessive-compulsive sample.

Background And Objectives: Inconsistent findings across studies challenge the viability of response inhibition (RI) as an endophenotype of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Contemporary conceptualization of endophenotypes in psychiatric disorders suggests that these markers vary continuously in the general population, highlighting the importance of analogue sample research. Although neuropsychological functions have been studied in subclinical obsessive-compulsive (OC) samples, no study to date had examined RI in the context of the go/no-go paradigm.

Surveillance of gastrointestinal disease in France using drug sales data.

Drug sales data have increasingly been used for disease surveillance during recent years. Our objective was to assess the value of drug sales data as an operational early detection tool for gastroenteritis epidemics at national and regional level in France. For the period 2008-2013, we compared temporal trends of drug sales for the treatment of gastroenteritis with trends of cases reported by a Sentinel Network of general practitioners.

Quantitative assessment of preventive behaviors in France during the Fukushima nuclear crisis.

Background: The Fukushima nuclear disaster has generated worldwide concern on the risk of exposure to nuclear radiations. In Europe, health authorities had to issue statements about the lack of usefulness of iodine based preventive treatments within their borders. However a lack of confidence in official messages has developed in various European countries due to recent perceived failures in managing public health crises.

Modelling transmission of bovine tuberculosis in red deer and wild boar in Normandy, France.

In early 2001, Mycobacterium bovis infection was confirmed in red deer (RD) (Cervus elaphus) shot in Normandy region, France. An epidemiological survey conducted during the following hunting season in two connected forests confirmed the occurrence of the disease in both free-ranging RD and wild boar (WB) (Sus scrofa). This was the first detected bovine tuberculosis outbreak in wildlife in France.
