Background: Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is widely used for hepatocellular carcinoma treatment but side effects hamper tolerance. Dexamethasone reduces TACE side effects in patients with viral hepatitis, but data regarding alcohol and metabolic liver diseases are lacking. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of dexamethasone in preventing TACE-associated adverse events in European populations with predominantly alcoholic and metabolic cirrhosis.

Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is a rare disease characterised by an obstruction in the hepatic venous outflow. We describe two cases of patients hospitalised a few days after tozinameran vaccination. Liver tests and medical imaging were carried out, and BCS was diagnosed.

Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir is a promising option for preventing severe COVID-19 in solid organ transplant recipients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, concerns have arisen regarding potential drug interactions with calcineurin inhibitors (CNI). This two-phase multicentre retrospective study, involving 113 patients on tacrolimus and 13 on cyclosporine A, aimed to assess the feasibility and outcomes of recommendations issued by The French societies of transplantation (SFT) and pharmacology (SFPT) for CNI management in this context.

Background And Aims: Since the introduction of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, several cases of vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (VITT) have been described, especially cerebral vein thrombosis. We aimed to retrospectively collect all new cases of acute onset first or recurrent splanchnic vein thrombosis (SVT) following a recent SARS-CoV-2 vaccination within the Vascular Liver Disease Group network.

Approach And Results: New cases of SVT were identified from April 2021 to April 2022; follow-up was completed on December 31, 2022.

Background & Aims: Liver injury with autoimmune features after vaccination against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is increasingly reported. We investigated a large international cohort of individuals with acute hepatitis arising after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, focusing on histological and serological features.

Methods: Individuals without known pre-existing liver diseases and transaminase levels ≥5x the upper limit of normal within 3 months after any anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, and available liver biopsy were included.

Background: Renal failure is an independent prognostic factor for survival in patients with cirrhosis. Equations to calculate serum creatinine significantly overestimate the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Plasma clearance of direct biomarkers has been used to improve the accuracy of evaluations of GFR in this population, but no study has simultaneously measured plasma and urinary clearance, which is the gold standard.

Article Synopsis
  • Calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD) can be triggered by low magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia), which can occur due to medications like tacrolimus used in organ transplant patients.* -
  • A 53-year-old man who had a liver transplant experienced painful inflammation in his joints, and tests revealed CPPD crystals and low magnesium levels attributed to renal loss from tacrolimus.* -
  • After switching medication and starting magnesium supplementation, the patient showed significant improvement without recurrence of pain over 8 months, highlighting the importance of identifying medication-related causes of persistent hypomagnesemia in CPPD.*
