Daylight photodynamic therapy in 25 patients with actinic keratosis and evaluation of efficacy by confocal microscopy.

Background: Daylight photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been reported as having similar efficacy to conventional photodynamic therapy in actinic keratosis treatment.

Methods: 25 patients with actinic keratosis of the scalp and/or face were submitted to a daylight photodynamic therapy session. Adverse reactions were evaluated after one week and efficacy after 3 months.

Bullous lupus erythematosus with an erythema gyratum repens-like pattern.

Bullous lupus erythematosus is a rare clinical form of lupus. The diagnosis is challenging and involves the exclusion of other subepidermal bullous dermatoses. We present a 21-year-old woman with erythematosus, polycyclic plaques with vesiculobullae along the periphery, creating an erythema gyratum repens-like pattern on acral regions.

POEM in Latin America: The Rise of a New Standard.

Background: Per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) has become the preferred alternative treatment to standard Heller myotomy for patients with esophageal achalasia, in Latin American countries. The aim of our study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a POEM in the management of achalasia with and without Chagas disease in patients receiving POEM.

Methods: Patients who underwent POEM from tertiary centers in Latin America were included in a dedicated registry.

Neutrophilic eccrine hidradenitis in a patient with FOLFOX chemotherapy.

This case study describes a 37-year-old Caucasian male with pruritic papules and plaques-some with central erosion-on the arms, neck, and trunk that appeared after chemotherapy with FOLFOX (folinic acid, fluorouacil, and oxiliplatin) for colon cancer. A histological examination showed features of neutrophilic eccrine hidradenitis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of neutrophilic eccrine hidradenitis due to FOLFOX.

Efficacy of the cardiac septal occluder in the treatment of post-bariatric surgery leaks and fistulas.

Background: Endoscopy has evolved to become first-line therapy for the treatment of post-bariatric leaks; however, many sessions are often required with variable success rates. Due to these limitations, the use of the cardiac septal defect occluder (CSDO) has recently been reported in this population.

Methods: The study population was a multicenter retrospective series of patients with post-bariatric surgical leaks who underwent treatment with CSDO placement.

PROGNOSTIC FACTORS IN PATIENTS WITH APPENDICULAR MYXOFIBROSARCOMA.

Objective: Myxofibrosarcoma (MFS) is a common soft tissue sarcoma (STS) that affects the extremities in elderly patients. The objective was to analyze the prognostic factors and outcomes of patients with MFS treated at a single institution.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 75 patients with MFS.

Influence of obstacle color on locomotor and gaze behaviors during obstacle avoidance in people with Parkinson's disease.

The color of an obstacle may enable a more detailed view of the environment to facilitate obstacle avoidance. However, people with Parkinson's disease (PD) present visual contrast and color detection dysfunction, which could affect obstacle avoidance according to obstacle color. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of obstacle color on locomotor and gaze behavior during obstacle avoidance in people with PD and neurologically healthy older individuals.

TIBIAL ADAMANTINOMA: ANALYSIS OF SEVEN CONSECUTIVE CASES IN A SINGLE INSTITUTION.

Objective: Adamantinoma accounts for less than 1% of the primary bone neoplasms. The tibia is the most affected bone and it is predominant in male patients between the second and third decades of life. The objective of this study is to obtain epidemiological and clinical information on patients with adamantinoma of the tibia treated surgically between 1989 and 2016.

EXTRA-ABDOMINAL DESMOID TUMOR: ANALYSIS OF 23 CONSECUTIVE CASES IN A SINGLE INSTITUTION.

Objective: Extra-abdominal desmoid tumor (EDT) is a rare condition, caused by proliferation of fibroblasts. Despite being a benign tumor, it is locally aggressive and has unpredictable clinical behavior. The objective of this study is to present the clinical outcomes of patients with EDT treated surgically between 1995 and 2016.

Electromyographic Biofeedback in Motor Function Recovery After Peripheral Nerve Injury: An Integrative Review of the Literature.

Electromyographic biofeedback (EMG-BF) has been applied to treat different types of peripheral nerve injuries (PNI). However, despite the clinical practice widespread use its evidence is controversial. With the objective of summarize the available evidence on the electromyographic biofeedback effectiveness and efficacy to help motor function recovery after PNI an integrative review was performed.

TERT promoter mutations are associated with poor prognosis in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.

Background: Telomerase reverse transcriptase gene (TERT) promoter (TERTp) mutations have been reported as potential predictors of poor prognosis in several cancers, but the prognostic value of TERTp mutations for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) has not been determined.

Objective: To evaluate the frequency of TERTp mutations and correlate it with clinicopathologic features and patient outcome.

Methods: We performed genetic profiling of TERTp mutations in a retrospective series of cSCCs.

This study describes the use of PICCs at the Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology at the Hospital das Clinicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo over the last 10 years.

Methods: This retrospective study analyzed 1,057 medical records and included 1,023 medical files with complete information on the punctured vein, diagnosis, duration of catheterization, complications, and catheter tip positioning.

The accentuated increase in the use of medicinal plants by the population to treat diseases makes it necessary to carry out pharmacological studies in order to contribute to the scientific knowledge and clarify the mechanisms involved in the main compounds present in these plants. Due to the difficulty of combating antimicrobial-resistant microorganisms, plants become a low-cost and effective alternative. The stem, fruit, and leaves of plants are used to measure antioxidant and antimicrobial capacity and to combat the oxidative degradation of free radicals produced in the presence of xenobiotics.

Photodynamic inactivation assisted by localized surface plasmon resonance of silver nanoparticles: In vitro evaluation on Escherichia coli and Streptococcus mutans.

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of gold nanoparticles has been reported to increase the antimicrobial effect of the photodynamic therapy. Although silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are an efficient growth inhibitor of microorganisms, no studies exploring LSPR of AgNPs to enhance the photodynamic inactivation (PDI) have been related. There is some controversy with regard to the use of propofol by physicians who are not anesthesiologists. We present our experience of the administration of propofol by endoscopist and nursing personnel.

Innate and adaptive lymphocytes sequentially shape the gut microbiota and lipid metabolism.

The mammalian gut is colonized by numerous microorganisms collectively termed the microbiota, which have a mutually beneficial relationship with their host. Normally, the gut microbiota matures during ontogeny to a state of balanced commensalism marked by the absence of adverse inflammation. Subsets of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) and conventional T cells are considered to have redundant functions in containment and clearance of microbial pathogens, but how these two major lymphoid-cell populations each contribute to shaping the mature commensal microbiome and help to maintain tissue homeostasis has not been determined.

Local Melting Attracts Grain Boundaries in Colloidal Polycrystals.

We find that laser-induced local melting attracts and deforms grain boundaries in 2D colloidal crystals. When a melted region in contact with the edge of a crystal grain recrystallizes, it deforms the grain boundary-this attraction is driven by the multiplicity of deformed grain boundary configurations. Furthermore, the attraction provides a method to fabricate artificial colloidal crystal grains of arbitrary shape, enabling new experimental studies of grain boundary dynamics and ultimately hinting at a novel approach for fabricating materials with designer microstructures.

Domestic feline contribution in the transmission of Sporothrix in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil: a comparison between infected and non-infected populations.

Background: Sporotrichosis is a neglected zoonosis caused by pathogenic fungi belonging to the Sporothrix schenckii complex. In Rio de Janeiro state, this disease reached an epidemic status with over 4700 domestic felines and around 4000 humans affected since the mid-90s. The present study evaluated clinical and epidemiological aspects and also the frequency of colonization and infection by these fungi in healthy cats and among those with suspicious cutaneous lesions, inhabiting four Rio de Janeiro state distinct areas.

Low-frequency rTMS in the superior parietal cortex affects the working memory in horizontal axis during the spatial task performance.

Spatial working memory has been extensively investigated with different tasks, treatments, and analysis tools. Several studies suggest that low frequency of the repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) applied to the parietal cortex may influence spatial working memory (SWM). However, it is not yet known if after low-frequency rTMS applied to the superior parietal cortex, according to Pz electroencephalography (EEG) electrode, would change the orientation interpretation about the vertical and horizontal axes coordinates in an SWM task.

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) and Peripheral Electrical Stimulation (PES) can modulate cortical excitability and help to control chronic pain. Studies have shown that combined use of tDCS and PES has additive effects.

Conservation planning for freshwater-marine carryover effects on Chinook salmon survival.

Experiences of migratory species in one habitat may affect their survival in the next habitat, in what is known as carryover effects. These effects are especially relevant for understanding how freshwater experience affects survival in anadromous fishes. Here, we study the carryover effects of juvenile salmon passage through a hydropower system (Snake and Columbia rivers, northwestern United States).

Enteroparasite and vivax malaria co-infection on the Brazil-French Guiana border: Epidemiological, haematological and immunological aspects.

Malaria-enteroparasitic co-infections are known for their endemicity. Although they are prevalent, little is known about their epidemiology and effect on the immune response. This study evaluated the effect of enteroparasite co-infections with malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax in a border area between Brazil and French Guiana.
