Article Synopsis
  • Oral administration of modified homogalacturonan (HG) from Ficus pumila L. shows promise in treating colitis, but its effectiveness needs improvement.
  • The study found that low-degrees of methyl-esterification (DM) in HG primarily help reduce inflammation, while high-DM HG aids in repairing the intestinal barrier, affecting gut microbiota differently.
  • Increased acetylation (DA) reduces HG's solubility and shows limited anti-inflammatory effects but helps in microbiome regulation and barrier repair, highlighting the importance of structural modifications in HG's therapeutic potential.

Article Synopsis
  • Steamed Polygonatum cyrtonema is effective for its health benefits, mainly due to a polysaccharide called PSP-W-1.
  • PSP-W-1, characterized as a galactan with a specific structure, has shown to inhibit inflammatory factors in a mouse model of colitis.
  • Oral administration of PSP-W-1 improved intestinal health by repairing the gut barrier and positively altering gut microbiota, suggesting its potential as a treatment for colitis.

Nitric oxide (NO), a ubiquitous intracellular and intercellular messenger molecule, plays vital roles in many physiological processes and is closely related to many diseases. Although a lot of fluorescent probes have been developed for real-time detection of NO successfully, the probes still suffer from poor tissue permeability and limited selectivity. In this study, a novel far-red fluorescent probe ZJL-3 based on rhodamine fluorescent dye was designed, synthesized, and used for NO determination.
