Synthesis and Characterization with Antineoplastic, Biochemical, Cytotoxic, and Antimicrobial Studies of Schiff Base Cu(II) Ion Complexes.

Copper(II) complexes containing two Schiff base ligands derived from 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde with 2-aminophenol and 3-aminophenol have been synthesized and characterized by means of analytical, magnetic, and spectroscopic methods. Bacteria, fungus, Entamoeba histolytica, and antineoplastic activities of the synthesized complexes have been determined by monitoring the parameters cell growth inhibition, survival time of tumour mice, time-body relation, causing of intraperitoneal cells and macrophages, alkaline phosphatase activity, hematological effect, and biopsy of tumour.

Relationship of Soluble RAGE with Insulin Resistance and Beta Cell Function during Development of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

This study examined whether circulating levels of soluble receptor for advanced glycation end products (sRAGE) alter in prediabetes and correlate with insulin resistance (IR) and beta cell function in prediabetes and newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Subjects without previous history of diabetes were recruited and grouped as control, prediabetes, and newly diagnosed T2DM. The control subjects (n = 40) and people with prediabetes (n = 52) and diabetes (n = 66) were similar in terms of age, sex, BMI, systolic and diastolic BP, and fasting insulin level.

Recent Trends in the Presentation of Neuroanatomy in Contemporary Neuroanatomy Books as Revealed in Their 'Preface's: A Review.

Many changes have been made in the field of Neuroanatomy teaching and assessment. One important way to know the changes in other country is by analyzing the Neuroanatomy text books and we can compare their reflections in our curriculum by analyzing the assessment system. To analyze the 'Preface's of contemporary Neuroanatomy text books, qualitatively, for noting the approaches taken and means applied in dealing with Neuroanatomy in the text books.

A comparison of mouse parvovirus 1 infection in BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice: susceptibility, replication, shedding, and seroconversion.

This study characterized the effects of challenge with a field isolate of mouse parvovirus 1 (MPV1e) in C57BL/6NCrl (B6) and BALB/cAnNCrl (C) mice. We found that C mice were more susceptible to MPV1e infection than were B6 mice; ID50 were 50 to 100 times higher after gavage and 10-fold higher after intraperitoneal injection in B6 as compared with C mice. To evaluate the host strain effect on the pathogenesis of MPV1e, B6 and C mice were inoculated by gavage.

Correlation of hyperinsulinemia with hyperandrogenemia in primary infertile women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrinopathy among women of the reproductive age and is the most common form of anovulatory infertility. Hyperinsulinemia and hyperandrogenemia are the characteristic features of PCOS, but the association between hyperinsulinemia and hyperandrogenemia is not well established. To find out any causal association between Hyperinsulinemia and hyperandrogenemia, a retrospective study was done on primary infertile women suffering from PCOS in the department of Biochemistry, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.

Cord blood stem cells - a dream for future medicine.

Umbilical cord blood collected at birth is a rich source of stem cells that can be used to treat diseases of the blood and immune system. Cord blood stem cells which have infinite medical potential are currently used in the treatment of several life-threatening diseases, and play an important role in the treatment of blood and immune system related genetic diseases, cancers, and blood disorders. Transplant recipients are less likely to reject a cord blood stem cell and do not require a perfect match as bone marrow transplants do.

Appendicitis is the most common clinical condition of the appendix. Many cases of acute appendicitis result from obstruction of the lumen of the appendix by lymphoid hyperplasia. The vermiform appendix is a worm-like, closed-ended, narrow, small tubular structure, projecting from posteromedial wall of cecum.

Microscopic impacts of gestational diabetes mellitus on the umbilical cord.

This observational study was done among the different types of diabetes, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). In the present study we looked for the microscopic impacts of GDM on the umbilical cord. This study was carried out in the department of Anatomy, Chittagong Medical College from May 2006 to April 2007.

Locating Pb2+ and Zn2+ in zinc finger-like peptides using mass spectrometry.

The binding preferences of Pb(2+)and Zn(2+) in doubly charged complexes with zinc finger-like 12-residue peptides (Pep), [Mn(Pep-2(n-1)H)](2+) have been explored using tandem mass spectrometry. The peptides were synthesized strategically by blocking the N-terminus with an acetyl group and with four cysteine and/or histidine residues in positions 2, 5, 8, and 11, arranged in different motifs: CCHH, CHCH, and CCCC. The MS(2) spectra of the Pb(2+) and Zn(2+) complexes show multiple losses of water and a single methane loss and these provide a sensitive method for locating the metal dication and so elucidating its coordination.

Lead(II)-catalyzed oxidation of guanine in solution studied with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry.

The oxidation of guanine was investigated in water/methanol solution both in the absence and in the presence of Pb(II) with a variable temperature reactor coupled to a tandem mass spectrometer that allowed signature ions of solution reagents and products to be monitored by electrospray ionization (ESI). Two different oxidizing agents were employed, one strong (peroxymonosulfuric acid) and one weaker (hydrogen peroxide). Peroxymonosulfuric acid was observed to oxidize guanine rapidly at room temperature, k(app) > 10(-2) s(-1), whether in the absence or in the presence of Pb(II), to produce spiroiminohydantoin.

Stature estimation from craniofacial anthropometry in Bangladeshi Garo adult females.

Estimation of stature is an important tool in forensic examination especially in unknown, highly decomposed, fragmentary and mutilated human remains. When the evidences are skeletal remains; forensic anthropology has put forward means to estimate the stature from the skeletal and even from fragmentary bones. Sometimes, craniofacial remains are brought in for forensic and postmortem examination.
