This review describes the necessity, evolution, and current state of prehospital blood programs in the United States. Less than 1% of 9-1-1 ground emergency medical service agencies have been able to successfully implement prehospital blood transfusions as part of a resuscitation strategy for patients in hemorrhagic shock despite estimates that annually between 54,000 and 900,000 patients may benefit from its use. The use of prehospital blood transfusions as a tool for managing hemorrhagic shock has barriers to overcome to ensure it becomes widely available to patients throughout the United States.

Materials And Methods: We used the Culture Conducive to Women's Academic Success (CCWAS), a validated survey tool, to investigate the academic climate at an NCI-designated Cancer Center. We adapted the CCWAS to be applicable to people of all genders.

Following the successful renewal of its Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG), leadership of the UCSF Helen Diller Comprehensive Cancer Center (HDFCCC) began a strategic planning process. The motivation was to think about where cancer research was going in the future; and with this vision to define a general scientific direction, mission, and priorities. A subset of severely injured patients either die in the field or develop irreversible hemorrhagic shock before they can receive hospital definitive care, resulting in poor outcomes. The focus of this opinion paper is to delineate (a) the need for existing trauma systems to adapt so that potentially life-saving advanced resuscitation and truncal hemorrhage control interventions can be delivered closer to the point-of-injury in select patients, and (b) a possible mechanism through which some trauma systems can train and incorporate select prehospital advanced resuscitative care teams to deliver those interventions.

In the present paper, we review current evidence showing that components of the nuclear lamina interact directly with heterochromatin, which implicates the nuclear lamina in a mechanism of specific gene retention at the nuclear periphery and release to the nuclear interior upon gene activation. We also discuss recent data showing that mutations in lamin proteins affect gene positioning and expression, providing a potential mechanism for how these mutations lead to tissue-specific diseases.

We studied the ΔK46 Caenorhabditis elegans lamin mutant, corresponding to EDMD-linked ΔK32 in human lamins A and C. Cryo-electron tomography of lamin ΔK46 filaments in vitro revealed alterations in the lateral assembly of dimeric head-to-tail polymers, which causes abnormal organization of tetrameric protofilaments.

Materials And Methods: Techniques used in adult CT angiography were modified to allow imaging of 15 children aged 1 month to 12 years. Two-dimensional axial images and three-dimensional shaded surface display images of the airway and great vessels were generated from volumetric CT data and evaluated prospectively.
Objectives: Magnetic resonance angiography with three-dimensional surface rendering was performed to determine its value in assessing anatomic detail in patients with suspected aortic aneurysms.
