Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a heterogeneous hematological condition associated with cytopenia, inadequate blood cell synthesis, and the risk of developing acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Patients are divided into risk groups according to the International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS) to help direct therapy. Allogeneic stem cell transplantation, despite its limitations, is curative.

Brain white-matter changes associated with symptomatic acute COVID-19 infection in the neonatal period.

We report an important case of periventricular white matter damage in a 1-month-old infant, demonstrated on high quality structural (T2) and diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging. The infant was born at term following an uneventful pregnancy and discharged home shortly after, but was brought to the paediatric emergency department five days after birth with seizures and respiratory distress, testing positive for COVID-19 infection on PCR. These images highlight the need to consider brain MRI in all infants with symptomatic SARS-Cov-2 infection, and show how this infection can lead to extensive white matter damage in the context of multisystem inflammation.

Spatial distribution and lifetime cancer risk due to naturally occurring radionuclides in soils around tar-sand deposit area of Ogun State, southwest Nigeria.

Anthropogenically enhanced naturally occurring radionuclides U, Th and K present in the tar-sand soil samples were measured by gamma ray spectrometer using a highly shielded NaI (TI) detector with the aim of evaluating the environmental radiological hazards. Mineralogical analysis and characterization was carried out using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The results obtained showed that the average activity concentrations of U, Th and K ranges from BDL↔76.

Free radical scavenging: a possible mechanism of action for the anti-inflammatory activity of Russelia equisetiformis (Schlect & Chan) (Scrophulariacae).

The methanol extract of Russelia equisetiformis (MRE), which exhibited significant antiinflammatory activity, was evaluated for the possible mode of action by studying its antioxidant potential in adjuvant- induced arthritic rats. 1, 1 diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging effect was determined by spectrophotometric method. The enzymatic activity of the superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, showed a significant increase, while the lipid peroxide content was found to decrease to a large extent in MRE and indomethacin-treated rats.

Assessment of groundwater quality in a typical rural settlement in southwest Nigeria.

In most rural settlements in Nigeria, access to clean and potable water is a great challenge, resulting in water borne diseases. The aim of this study was to assess the levels of some physical, chemical, biochemical and microbial water quality parameters in twelve hand - dug wells in a typical rural area (Igbora) of southwest region of the country. Seasonal variations and proximity to pollution sources (municipal waste dumps and defecation sites) were also examined.
