Chlorinated benzoquinones (CBQs) are a class of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) that are widely present in aquatic environments. Due to their strong cytotoxicity and genotoxicity to aquatic organisms and humans, the identification of novel CBQs and the exploration of their formation mechanisms became the focus of recent research. In this study, a new group of chlorinated DBPs formed during chlorination of two aromatic amino acids, tyrosine (Tyr) and tryptophan (Trp), were identified for the first time.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) interact with the rat aryl hydrocarbon receptor (rAhR), highlighting the biological and toxic effects of these interactions.
  • Researchers used computational models to analyze 90 PACs, identifying strong binding energies and key amino acids (Pro295 and Arg316) that play significant roles in the interaction.
  • Two predictive models were created to forecast rAhR activity based on characteristics of PACs, with findings valuable for understanding their impact and risks in biological systems.

In the face of ongoing water pollution challenges, the intricate interplay between dissolved organic matter and disinfectants like chlorine gives rise to potentially harmful disinfection byproducts (DBPs) during water treatment. The exploration of DBP formation originating from amino acids (AA) is a critical focus of global research. Aromatic DBPs, in particular, have garnered considerable attention due to their markedly higher toxicity compared to their aliphatic counterparts.

Article Synopsis
  • Ovarian cancer is tough to treat because some patients become resistant to medicines, which leads to higher chances of reoccurrence and death.
  • Researchers found a natural product called NK007 that can stop the growth and movement of both sensitive and resistant ovarian cancer cells.
  • NK007 works by changing cell behavior in a way that doesn’t cause cell death but still makes the cancer cells weaker, potentially helping in the fight against hard-to-treat ovarian cancer.
