Background: Acute diarrhea (AD), which is defined as frequent passing of liquid stools compared to normal, is a serious and worrying problem and remains a concern for healthcare systems because of its high mortality cause in children under 5 years old. The authors' study aimed to present the prevalence and to describe the clinical manifestation of AD among under-5 children.

Methods: From June 2022 to May 2023, the authors conducted a retrospective, descriptive and cross-sectional study including all patients aged 0-5 years hospitalized for AD.

Malaria is a significant public health challenge in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), with a high prevalence and mortality rate, particularly among children under five years old. This study examines the impact of malaria in eastern DR Congo, where armed conflict and humanitarian crises have resulted in overcrowded refugee and internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, exacerbating malaria transmission. Malnutrition, limited access to healthcare, and poor living conditions makes children under the age of five particularly vulnerable.

Developing efficient, stable, cost-effective, and environmentally benign heterogeneous catalysts for transesterification is highly required for sustainable biodiesel production. The present study explores the biodiesel production from waste cooking oil (WCO) using graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) and its alkaline-modified nanocatalyst. The catalysts were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).

Understanding the stability of photosynthetic pigments is crucial for developing crop cultivars with high productivity and resilience to the environmental stresses. This study leveraged GGE biplot, WAASB, and MTSI indices to assess the stability of content and composition of photosynthetic pigments in leaves and siliques of 286 Brassica juncea (L.) Czern.

Objective: To evaluate background incidence rates of 59 health outcomes of interest (HOI) in a diverse population, including important subpopulations, during the pre-COVID-19 era (1 January 2017-31 December 2019) and the COVID-19 era (1 March 2020-31 December 2020), before the introduction of COVID-19 vaccines.

Design: Observational retrospective cohort study. Annual incidence rates and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of HOIs were estimated for each population of interest, stratified by: age, sex, age and sex and seasonality.

Brassica juncea depends heavily on nitrogen (N) fertilizers for growth and accumulation of seed protein. However, it is an inefficient mobilizer of applied N which leads to accumulation of excess N in the soil, posing environmental risks. Hence, it is imperative to systematically examine spatial-temporal pattern of crop N to efficiently manage N application.

Background: The transdermal patch of bisoprolol available in Japan has been reported to demonstrate superior efficacy in preventing postoperative atrial fibrillation, possibly surpassing its oral counterpart. However, there has been no systematic review and meta-analysis assessing the efficacy of transdermal bisoprolol.

Methods: A comprehensive systematic literature search was conducted on PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane to identify all relevant studies assessing the efficacy of transdermal bisoprolol in preventing postoperative atrial fibrillation.

This case report explores the complexities involved in the diagnosis and management of asymptomatic mitral regurgitation (MR) in a 64-year-old male presenting with an incidental systolic murmur. Torrential MR with flail mitral valve (MV) segments was identified through comprehensive imaging and clinical evaluation, including echocardiography and catheterization. The discussion highlights the nuances of surgical timing, emphasizing the importance of tailored approaches based on left ventricular (LV) function and dilation.

Many recent outbreaks of influenza A (H1N1) in the world, especially in Brazil, it has become clear that the severity of the disease is not known in the same form. On Wednesday, June 7, 2023, Brazil notified the WHO of a fatal case of human infection with a variant of the influenza A(H1N1) virus of swine origin, this case was confirmed in a laboratory in the region of the interior state of Paraná. This is the first human infection caused by an influenza A (H1N1) virus reported in 2023 nationwide in Brazil.

Efflux pumps are active transporters, which allow the cell to remove toxic substances from within the cell including antibiotics and photosensitizer complexes. Efflux pump inhibitors (EPIs), chemicals that prevent the passage of molecules through efflux pumps, play a crucial role in antimicrobial effectiveness against pathogen. In this work, we studied the effect of EPI, namely, reserpine, on photodeactivation rate of pathogens when used with Ag NPs and methylene blue (MB).

Neurocysticercosis, a parasitic infection caused by the larvae of , presents a diagnostic challenge, particularly in non-endemic regions. This case report evaluates the intricacies of diagnosing neurocysticercosis in a 62-year-old male presenting with an intractable headache and altered mental status, initially confounded by the absence of an exposure history. Despite lacking typical risk factors, including immunocompromise or HIV infection, his travel history to an endemic area prompted a rigorous clinical work-up.

Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is an embryogenic remnant that can be found in healthy adults with no repercussions. However, it poses a risk of paradoxical embolism. In patients with known embolic stroke, the risk of recurrence is greater.

This abstract presents the case of a 37-year-old female with no significant past medical history who presented to the emergency department with a unique and challenging clinical scenario. The patient complained of chest pain, dyspnea, and a productive cough associated with stabbing chest pain that improved with leaning forward for the past week. Despite an initial diagnosis of community-acquired pneumonia, the patient's condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to septic shock.

The foramen ovale serves as an opening between the right and left atria at the site of the fossa ovalis in the fetus during uterine life. During fetal life, it makes it possible for venous blood from the maternal placenta with oxygen and nutrients to bypass the immature fetal lung and get transported to the left side of the heart and onto the systemic circulation. This hole from the right to the left atrium is usually occluded at the time of birth or shortly after birth, due to increased pressures in the left-sided cardiac cavities associated with normal breathing during delivery or shortly afterwards.

Rapeseed is a crop of global importance but there is a need to broaden the genetic diversity available to address breeding objectives. Radiation mutagenesis, supported by genomics, has the potential to supersede genome editing for both gene knockout and copy number increase, but detailed knowledge of the molecular outcomes of radiation treatment is lacking. To address this, we produced a genome re-sequenced panel of 1133 M generation rapeseed plants and analysed large-scale deletions, single nucleotide variants and small insertion-deletion variants affecting gene open reading frames.

Article Synopsis
  • Understanding the genetic basis of resistance to Sclerotinia stem rot in rapeseed/canola is crucial for improving disease management, as current methods are only partially effective.
  • A breeding study using a specific population revealed significant genetic variations in resistance traits, including a strong link between stem lesion length (SLL) and stem diameter (SD), which can guide selection practices.
  • The study identified important genetic markers and quantitative trait loci (QTL) that will help breeders develop more resistant cultivars, ultimately aiding in the fight against this damaging disease.

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) utilization is increasing, along with procedural success. Coronary angiography is frequently performed before the TAVR procedure for coronary artery disease workup. Chronic total occlusion (CTO) of the coronary artery shares common risk factors with aortic stenosis and could be challenging, especially in terms of procedural safety.

Clinical studies suggest low testosterone levels are associated with cardiac arrhythmias, especially in later life. We investigated whether chronic exposure to low circulating testosterone promoted maladaptive electrical remodeling in ventricular myocytes from aging male mice and determined the role of late inward sodium current () in this remodeling. C57BL/6 mice had a gonadectomy (GDX) or sham surgery (1 mo) and were aged to 22-28 mo.
