Peritonsillar abscesses and deep neck infection are potentially serious infections among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), posing risks for severe complications and drawing significant public health concern. This nationwide, population-based longitudinal study (2002-2019) assessed the extended relationship between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the likelihood of peritonsillar abscess and deep neck infection in a Korean cohort. Using a 1:4 propensity score overlap-weighted matching, we included 16,879 individuals with CKD and 67,516 comparable controls, accounting for demographic variables and comorbidities to ensure balanced group comparisons.

Background: Ulleungdo and Dokdo, located in the East Sea, are volcanic islands with high ecological value due to their unique biodiversity. Although research on the insect fauna on these two Islands has been conducted from the early 19 century to recent times, limitations exist due to several issues, including misidentifications and historical errors. This study addresses these issues by conducting a comprehensive insect survey from 2020 to 2023, re-identifying misidentified specimens and compiling references to create an updated and accurate checklist of insect species for Ulleungdo and Dokdo.

Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and periodontitis are common conditions in older adults that can lead to serious complications, gaining public health attention. Although GERD and periodontitis share common risk factors, such as age, lifestyle habits, and socioeconomic status, large-scale studies examining their specific relationship are limited.

Methods: This study aimed to assess the association between GERD and the likelihood of developing periodontitis using a national validated cohort data from Korea.

The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria poses a significant challenge to the treatment of bacterial infections, necessitating the development of novel antibiotics or strategies to preserve the efficacy of existing ones. This study investigates the role of oxidative stress modulation in the pathogenicity of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial strains, aiming to identify potential avenues for new drug design. Specifically, the anti-biofilm effects of crude extracts and fractions from seven halophyte species native to Jeju Island, South Korea, were evaluated against ATCC 17978.

Article Synopsis
  • ISG15 modification (ISGylation) is important for immune defense against viral infections like SARS-CoV-2 and helps boost innate immunity by modifying signaling proteins.
  • This study examines whether SARS-CoV-2 proteins can be ISGylated, identifying the nucleocapsid (N) protein as a target with crucial modification sites affecting its function.
  • It was found that ISGylation inhibits N protein dimerization and enhances susceptibility to immune responses, while the virus's PLpro protein can remove the ISG15 modification, countering the antiviral effects.

  • Meniere's disease (MD) is a chronic inner ear disorder causing symptoms like tinnitus, vertigo, and hearing loss, which significantly affects individuals' quality of life.
  • This study investigates the connection between upper respiratory infections (URIs) and MD using data from over 19,000 MD patients and almost 79,000 control subjects in South Korea.
  • Findings reveal that having a URI within one year increases the likelihood of developing MD by over two times, and a URI within two years still raises risk significantly, highlighting the importance of monitoring URI history in long-term health follow-ups.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic disorder affecting the gastrointestinal tract, negatively impacting patients' quality of life. Here, we aimed to evaluate the effects of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus IDCC 3201 (RH 3201) on irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C). In this randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, a total of 30 subjects with IBS-C were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive 8 weeks of probiotics administration or placebo.

  • The study investigates the introduction of the Southeast Asian mosquito species Aedes (Mucidus) laniger on Jeju Island, South Korea, highlighting the health risks of vector-borne diseases linked to climate change and human activities.
  • Field surveys conducted in August 2023 identified two specimens of Ae. laniger for the first time in this region, confirming its presence through morphological and molecular analyses, which aligned with phylogenetic results.
  • Original taxonomic keys for the Aedes genus in South Korea were updated, and potential habitats for Ae. laniger were modeled, indicating areas suitable for its spread on Jeju Island.*

Article Synopsis
  • A nationwide study in South Korea explored the connection between statin use and migraine occurrence, utilizing data from nearly 39,000 migraine patients and over 155,000 controls.
  • Statin users showed a lower likelihood of experiencing migraines overall, particularly for those with aura (reduced risk by 25%) and without aura (reduced risk by 6%).
  • The effectiveness of statins varied based on the type (lipophilic vs. hydrophilic) and individual factors like weight and lifestyle habits, highlighting the need for personalized approaches in migraine treatment.

Gastric cancer (GC) survivors may be more likely to develop osteoporosis. However, few studies on the relationship between GC and osteoporosis have been conducted on large patient populations. We aimed to determine the incidence of osteoporosis and identify related factors by comparing patients with GC and matched controls using the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort (KNHIS-NSC).

Background: Many people struggle with the choice in a series of processes, from prostate cancer (PCa) diagnosis to treatment. We investigated the degree of regret after the prostate biopsy (PBx) and relevant factors in patients recommended for biopsy for suspected PCa.

Methods: From 06/2020 to 05/2022, 198 people who performed PBx at three institutions were enrolled and analyzed through a questionnaire before and after biopsy.

Growing research has proposed that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and chronic periodontitis (CP) share similar pathophysiological mechanisms involving inflammation and tissue destruction. However, the potential correlation of CP as a contributing factor for the occurrence of RA warrants validation in the Korean population, where both diseases are prevalent, especially considering the increasingly aging demographic in Korea. This study examined 5139 RA cases and 509,727 matched controls from a Korean national cohort dataset (2002-2019) by carefully employing propensity score matching to ensure comparability between groups.

Recent research suggests a potential relevance between chronic periodontitis (CP) and Parkinson's disease (PD), raising concerns about comorbid PD among elderly CP patients. However, the epidemiologic basis for this association remains unclear. Employing a nested case-control design, this study explored the association between CP and subsequent PD occurrences in Korean adults, leveraging a validated national population-based dataset covering the period from 2002 to 2019.

This study aimed to explore the safety and properties of IDCC 3401 as a novel probiotic strain via genomic and phenotypic analyses. In whole-genome sequencing, the genes associated with antibiotic resistance and virulence were not detected in this strain. The minimum inhibitory concentration test revealed that IDCC 3401 was susceptible to all the antibiotics tested, except for kanamycin.

There is a debate regarding the prediction of lymph node metastasis (LNM) in pedunculated T1 colorectal cancer (CRC). In this study with four cases of pedunculated T1 CRCs, we aimed to investigate gene expression variations based on the distance from the Haggitt line (HL) and identify potential molecular risk factors for LNM. By leveraging the Cancer Transcriptome Atlas and digital spatial profiling technology, we meticulously analyzed discrete regions, including the head, HL, proximal stalk region (300-1000 μm from HL), and distal stalk region (1500-2000 μm from HL) to identify spatially sequential molecular changes.
