Time-lapse microscopy using smartphone with augmented reality markers.

This study was designed to evaluate the effect of Korean red ginseng (KRG) supplementation on glucose control in subjects with impaired fasting glucose (IFG), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), or newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The study was a 12-week randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled (5 g of KRG [n=21] or placebo [n=20] in tablet form) trial. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the associations between statin use and major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) and amputation-free survival in critical limb ischemia (CLI) patients.

Background: CLI is an advanced form of peripheral arterial disease associated with nonhealing arterial ulcers and high rates of MACCE and major amputation. Although statin medications are recommended for secondary prevention in peripheral arterial disease, their effectiveness in CLI is uncertain.

Soft-tissue cryoablation in diffuse locations: feasibility and intermediate term outcomes.

Purpose: To assess whether diverse tumor location(s) show differences in percutaneous cryoablation (PCA) outcomes of cancer control, morbidity, and ablation volume reduction for many soft-tissue tumor types.

Materials And Methods: A total of 220 computed tomography (CT)- and/or ultrasonography-guided percutaneous cryotherapy procedures were performed for 251 oligometastatic tumors from multiple primary cancers in 126 patients. A kinematic analysis of directional effects on mouse control.

The directional effects associated with cursor movement controlled by a computer mouse have long been studied to improve mouse performance during precise tasks. However, those studies have rarely considered the kinematic variables associated with directional effects and have only analysed the projection of trajectories along the main axes of movement, eventually reducing the original dimensions of the data. In addition, as the angle of approach has a limited number of levels, it has been difficult to observe singular behaviour in the horizontal directions.

The location of multifidus atrophy in patients with a single level, unilateral lumbar radiculopathy.

Objective: To identify the correlations between the location of multifidus atrophy and the level of lumbar radiculopathy.

Methods: Thirty-seven patients who had unilateral L4 or L5 radiculopathy were divided into 2 groups; the L4 radiculopathy (L4 RAD) group and the L5 radiculopathy (L5 RAD) group. Bilateral lumbar multifidus muscles at the mid-spinous process level of L4 vertebra (L4 MSP), the mid-spinous process level of L5 vertebra (L5 MSP), and the mid-sacral crest level of S1 vertebra (S1 MSC) were detected in T1 axial magnetic resonance imaging.

Objective: To identify the regenerating junctional epithelium (JE) during orthodontic tooth movement in rats.

Materials And Methods: Closed-coil springs were used to create a 20 g mesial force to the maxillary first molars. On days 1, 3, 7, 10, and 14 after force application, histologic changes in JE were examined by immunohistochemistry using proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), odontogenic ameloblast-associated protein (ODAM), and cytokeratin 14 (CK14).

Real-time surveillance of laboratory confirmed influenza based on the Danish microbiology database (MiBa).

The Danish microbiology database (MiBa) is a national database that automatically accumulates patient test results from all Danish Departments of Clinical Microbiology. As an example for use of MiBa, we describe the real-time surveillance of laboratory confirmed influenza established in October 2012. It functions without any extra burdens of reporting by laboratories or clinicians.

Independent risk factors for urinary tract infection and for subsequent bacteremia or acute cellular rejection: a single-center report of 1166 kidney allograft recipients.

Background: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a frequent, serious complication in kidney allograft recipients.

Methods: We reviewed the records of 1166 kidney allograft recipients who received their allografts at our institution between January 2005 and December 2010 and determined the incidence of UTI during the first 3 months after transplantation (early UTI). We used Cox proportional hazards models to determine the risk factors for early UTI and whether early UTI was an independent risk factor for subsequent bacteremia or acute cellular rejection (ACR).

The effect of efonidipine, a commercially available antihypertensive drug and Ca(2+) channel inhibitor, on voltage-dependent K(+) (Kv) channels was studied in freshly isolated rabbit coronary arterial smooth muscle cells using the whole-cell patch clamp technique. Flaccid leg paralysis caused by a thoracic epidural catheterization: a case report.

We report a case of a 44-year-old patient with paralysis of the left leg who had a thoracic epidural catheterization after general anesthesia for abdominal surgery. Sensory losses below T10 and motor weakness of the left leg occurred after the surgery. Magnetic resonance image study demonstrated a well-defined intramedullary linear high signal intensity lesion on T2-weighted image and low-signal intensity on T1-weighted image in the spinal cord between T9 and L1 vertebral level, and enhancements of the spinal cord below T8 vertebra and in the cauda equina.

A case of the cauda equina syndrome associated with the intrathecal chemotherapy in a patient with primary central nervous system lymphoma.

The intrathecal chemotherapy with methotrexate and cytarabine arabinoside is used for the treatment and prophylaxis of the primary central nervous system lymphoma. The therapy may induce neurotoxicity including the cauda equina syndrome. We report a case of a 58-year-old man with the diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, who developed the cauda equina syndrome after the administration of intrathecal methotrexate and cytarabine arabinoside, as diagnosed by the electrodiagnostic, urodynamic, and radiologic approaches.

Hepatic resection for hepatic metastases from gastric adenocarcinoma.

Purpose: The effects of hepatic resection on patients with metastatic tumors from gastric adenocarcinomas are unclear. Therefore, we analyzed early clinical outcomes in patients who underwent surgical resection for hepatic metastases from gastric adenocarcinomas.

Materials And Methods: From January 2003 to December 2010, 1,508 patients with primary gastric cancers underwent curative gastric resections at the Korea Cancer Center Hospital.
