The study explored endocrine resistance by leveraging machine learning to establish the prognostic stratification of predicted Circulating tumor cells (CTCs), assessing its integration with circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) features and contextually evaluate the potential of CTCs-based transcriptomics. 1118 patients with a diagnosis of luminal-like Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) were characterized for ctDNA through NGS before treatment start, predicted CTCs were computed through a K nearest neighbor algorithm. Differences across subgroups were analyzed through chi square or Fisher's exact test according to sample size and corrected for False Discovery Rate.

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) may be dedifferentiated somatic cells following oncogenic processes, representing a subpopulation of cells able to promote tumor growth with their capacities for proliferation and self-renewal, inducing lineage heterogeneity, which may be a main cause of resistance to therapies. It has been shown that the "less differentiated process" may have an impact on tumor plasticity, particularly when non-CSCs may dedifferentiate and become CSC-like. Bidirectional interconversion between CSCs and non-CSCs has been reported in other solid tumors, where the inflammatory stroma promotes cell reprogramming by enhancing Wnt signaling through nuclear factor kappa B activation in association with intracellular signaling, which may induce cells' pluripotency, the oncogenic transformation can be considered another important aspect in the acquisition of "new" development programs with oncogenic features.

Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy has revolutionized the treatment of cancer, in particular lung cancer, while the introduction of predictive biomarkers from liquid biopsies has emerged as a promising tool to achieve an effective and personalized therapy response. Important progress has also been made in the molecular characterization of extracellular vesicles (EVs) and circulating tumor cells (CTCs), highlighting their tremendous potential in modulating the tumor microenvironment, acting on immunomodulatory pathways, and setting up the pre-metastatic niche. Surface antigens on EVs and CTCs have proved to be particularly useful in the case of the characterization of potential immune escape mechanisms through the expression of immunosuppressive ligands or the transport of cargos that may mitigate the antitumor immune function.

The study was conducted among students in healthcare professions at the University of Bologna, in collaboration with the Local Health Authority of Imola, who were undertaking curricular internships in various public or private healthcare, social, and non-healthcare settings, as specified in the educational plan.

In this paper, we face the problem of task classification starting from physiological signals acquired using wearable sensors with experiments in a controlled environment, designed to consider two different age populations: young adults and older adults. Two different scenarios are considered. In the first one, subjects are involved in different cognitive load tasks, while in the second one, space varying conditions are considered, and subjects interact with the environment, changing the walking conditions and avoiding collision with obstacles.

This paper shows which morphological characterization method is most appropriate to simulating membrane performance in sweeping gas membrane distillation in the case of multilayer hydrophobized ceramic membranes. As a case study, capillary four-layer hydrophobic carbon-based titania membranes arranged in bundles in a shell-and-tube configuration were tested with NaCl-water solutions using air as sweeping gas, operating at temperatures from 40 to 110 °C and at pressures up to 5.3 bar.

Amplification or mutation of the Her2 oncoantigen in human mammary glands leads to the development of an aggressive breast carcinoma. Several features of this breast carcinoma are reproduced in mammary carcinomas that spontaneously arise in female transgenic mice bearing the activated rat Her2 oncogene under transcriptional control of the mouse mammary tumor virus promoter-BALB-neuT (neuT) mice. We previously demonstrated that carcinoma progression in neuT mice can be prevented by DNA vaccination with RHuT, a plasmid coding for a chimeric rat/human Her2 protein.

Myocarditis can lead to autoimmune disease, dilated cardiomyopathy, and heart failure, which is modeled in the mouse by cardiac myosin immunization (experimental autoimmune myocarditis [EAM]). Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) systemic inhibition exerts both preventive and therapeutic effects in EAM, and STAT3 constitutive activation elicits immune-mediated myocarditis dependent on complement C3 and correlating with activation of the STAT3-interleukin 6 (IL-6) axis in the liver. Thus, liver-specific STAT3 inhibition may represent a therapeutic option, allowing to bypass the heart toxicity, predicted by systemic STAT3 inhibition.

The paper introduces some aspects of the characterization of hydrophobized multilayer ceramic membranes intended for use in membrane distillation (MD) operations. Four-layer hydrophobic carbon-based titania membranes, manufactured by the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems (IKTS, Hermsdorf, Germany), were tested according to the gas permeation technique. A two-step synthesis is described for activating the surface of a fully hydrated hydrogel that is of interest as a possible scaffold for neural regeneration devices. The first step exploits the water content of the hydrogel and the hydrophobicity of the reaction solvent to create a thin oxide layer on the hydrogel surface using a common titanium or zirconium alkoxide. This layer serves as a reactive interface that enables rapid transformation of the hydrophilic, cell-nonadhesive hydrogel into either a highly hydrophobic surface by reaction with an alkylphosphonic acid, or into a cell-adhesive one using a (α,ω-diphosphono)alkane.

Polymeric sheets were perforated by laser ablation and were uncompromised by a debris field when first treated with a thin layer of photoresist. Polymer sheets perforated with holes comprising 5, 10, and 20% of the nominal surface area were then patterned in stripes by photolithography, which was followed by synthesis in exposed regions of a cell-attractive zirconium oxide-1,4-butanediphosphonic acid interface. Microscopic and scanning electron microscopy analyses following removal of unexposed photoresist show well-aligned stripes for all levels of these perforations.

There is an ever increasing amount of evidence to support the hypothesis that complement C1q, the first component of the classical complement pathway, is involved in the regulation of cancer growth, in addition to its role in fighting infections. It has been demonstrated that C1q is expressed in the microenvironment of various types of human tumors, including breast adenocarcinomas. Templating of cell spreading and proliferation is described that yields confluent layers of cells aligned across an entire two-dimensional surface. The template is a reactive, two-component interface that is synthesized in three steps in nanometer thick, micron-scaled patterns on silicon and on several biomaterial polymers. In this method, a volatile zirconium alkoxide complex is first deposited at reduced pressure onto a surface pattern that is prepared by photolithography; the substrate is then heated to thermolyze the organic ligands to form surface-bound zirconium oxide patterns.

We report the case of a 50-year-old woman who was admitted to the hospital for acute abdominal pain with nephrotic proteinuria, rapidly progressive renal failure, and moderate anemia. Laboratory tests showed mild Bence Jones (λ) proteinuria with negative serum immunofixation and a mild increase in λ free light chains. A bone marrow biopsy and a fat tissue aspirate showed multiple myeloma and amyloidosis.
