Proper lung function requires the maintenance of a tight endothelial barrier while simultaneously permitting the exchange of macromolecules and fluids to underlying tissue. Disruption of this barrier results in an increased vascular permeability in the lungs, leading to acute lung injury. In this study, we set out to determine whether transcriptional targets of Notch signaling function to preserve vascular integrity.

Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection causes nearly all cervical cancer cases and is a cause of anogenital and oropharyngeal cancers. The incidence of HPV-associated cancers is inequitable, with an increased burden on marginalized groups in high-income countries. Understanding how immunization status varies by material and social deprivation, health system, and geospatial factors is valuable for prioritizing and planning HPV immunization interventions.

HIV continues to be a major global health issue, having claimed millions of lives in the last few decades. While several empirical studies support the fact that proper nutrition is useful in the fight against HIV, very few studies have focused on developing and using mathematical modelling approaches to assess the association between HIV, human immune response to the disease, and nutrition. We develop a within-host model for HIV that captures the dynamic interactions between HIV, the immune system and nutrition.

Background: In high-income countries, the prevalence of physical inactivity and non-communicable diseases is high, and it is now well-established that insufficient physical activity is a risk factor for non-communicable diseases. Walking for recreation and transportation are effective means of improving population levels of physical activity. Research finds that the built environment (BE) can encourage or discourage walking behaviour, and this association varies for different age groups and sexes.

Economic globalisation is the integration of national economies into the global economy through the increasing flow of goods, services, capital, and technology across borders and it has contributed to garnering a significant portion of most nations' national income, although its agricultural value-added aspect has yet to be maximised. This pioneering study explores the impact of economic globalisation on value-added agriculture in a global context based on countries' income levels. Panel data regression with the stepwise method was employed to quantify the impact of economic globalization on agriculture value added in 101 countries between 2000 and 2021.

Algae-produced long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA; with ≥20 carbon atoms) are key biomolecules for consumer production and animal health. They are transferred to higher trophic levels and accumulated in food chains. However, LC-PUFA accumulation in consumers and their trophic transfer vary with the diet quality and the physiological demand for LC-PUFA of consumers.

Notch signaling is essential for the emergence of definitive hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in the embryo and their development in the fetal liver niche. However, how Notch signaling is activated and which fetal liver cell type provides the ligand for receptor activation in HSCs is unknown. Here we provide evidence that endothelial Jagged1 (Jag1) has a critical early role in fetal liver vascular development but is not required for hematopoietic function during fetal HSC expansion.

Biochars are widely used in the remediation of Cd-contaminated soils. However, changes in the bacterial communities in the rhizosphere contaminated with Cd in response to biochar aging are poorly studied. Addressing this gap in knowledge is important to improving micro-ecological services on healthy growth of plants with mitigation strategies against Cd contamination.

Long-term impairment in T cell-mediated adaptive immunity is a major clinical obstacle following treatment of blood disorders with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Although T cell development in the thymus has been extensively characterized, there are significant gaps in our understanding of prethymic processes that influence early T cell potential. We have uncovered a Notch/IL-21 signaling axis in bone marrow common lymphoid progenitor (CLP) cells.

The multifunctionality of genome is suggested at some loci in different species but not well understood. Here we identified a DES-K16 region in an intron of the Kctd16 gene as the chromatin highly marked with epigenetic modifications of both enhancers (H3K4me1 and H3K27ac) and silencers (H3K27me3) in mouse spermatocytes. In vitro reporter gene assay demonstrated that DES-K16 exhibited significant enhancer activity in spermatocyte-derived GC-2spd(ts) and hepatic tumor-derived Hepa1-6 cells, and a deletion of this sequence in GC-2spd(ts) cells resulted in a decrease and increase of Yipf5 and Kctd16 expression, respectively.
