An in-depth analysis of factors influencing small-scale cattle farmers' participation in livestock markets in Western Province of Zambia: navigating challenges and barriers.

Introductions: The low participation of small-scale farmers in livestock markets in sub-Saharan Africa, including Zambia, is a major inhibitor to private sector investment in the livestock subsector. Despite the immense potential of the livestock industry to bolster the economic development of countries in this region, several socioeconomic, environmental, and cultural factors contribute to this hindrance.

Methods: This study was conducted in the Western Province of Zambia and adopted a qualitative research approach to understand the challenges and barriers affecting livestock markets among smallholder cattle farmers.

Deployment of novel oral polio vaccine type 2 under emergency use listing in Nigeria: the rollout experience.

In 2011, a dedicated consortium of experts commenced work on the development of the novel oral poliovirus vaccine type 2 (nOPV2). After careful and rigorous analysis of data to enable early, targeted use of the vaccine, World Health Organization´s (WHO´s) Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) reviewed data from accelerated clinical development of nOPV2 and endorsed entering assessment under WHO´s Emergency Use Listing (EUL) procedure. In November 2020, nOPV2 received an interim recommendation for use under EUL to enable rapid field availability and potential wider rollout of the vaccine.

The role of polio emergency operations centers: perspectives for future disease control initiatives in Nigeria.

The Nigeria Polio Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) was established in October 2012 to strengthen coordination, provide strategic direction based on real-time data analysis, and manage all operational aspects of the polio eradication program. The establishment of seven state-level polio EOCs followed. Introduction: Highly sensitive acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance is critical for detection of poliovirus circulation and documentation for polio-free certification. The reverse cold chain (RCC) is a system designed to maintain stool specimens in appropriate temperature for effective detection of poliovirus in the laboratory. We monitored the RCC of AFP surveillance in Nigeria to determine its effectiveness in maintaining viability of enterovirus.

Colonization dynamics of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales in the gut of Malawian adults.

Drug-resistant bacteria of the order Enterobacterales which produce extended-spectrum beta-lactamase enzymes (ESBL-Enterobacterales, ESBL-E) are global priority pathogens. Antimicrobial stewardship interventions proposed to curb their spread include shorter courses of antimicrobials to reduce selection pressure but individual-level acquisition and selection dynamics are poorly understood. We sampled stool of 425 adults (aged 16-76 years) in Blantyre, Malawi, over 6 months and used multistate modelling and whole-genome sequencing to understand colonization dynamics of ESBL-E.

Measles outbreak response immunization during the COVID-19 pandemic: lessons from Borno State, Nigeria.

Introduction: the COVID-19 outbreak was declared a public health emergency of international concern by the WHO on the 30 January 2020. The occurrence of measles outbreaks in the context of COVID-19, both highly infectious respiratory illnesses, impacts additional challenges to the health system in a state with an ongoing humanitarian crisis. This article documents the implementation of an outbreak response immunization (ORI) during the COVID-19 pandemic and the implementation of global guidelines for mass vaccination.

Stroke Incidence and Outcome in a Population With COVID-19.

Background And Purpose: COVID-19 is associated with systemic thromboembolism including stroke. The study evaluated the 30-days stroke incidence in SARS-CoV-2 PCR positive patients and described the outcome of such patients.

Methods: This is a retrospective study of consecutive patients with a positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR test between March 1st, 2020 and August 30th, 2020.

Members of the species complex, particularly subsp. are antimicrobial resistance (AMR) associated pathogens of global importance, and polyvalent vaccines targeting O-antigens are in development. Whole-genome sequencing has provided insight into O-antigen distribution in the species complex as well as population structure and virulence determinants, but genomes from sub-Saharan Africa are underrepresented in global sequencing efforts.

The objectives were to determine the magnitude of, explore the reasons for, as well as possible solutions for reducing MOV in the State.

Background: Sepsis protocols in sub-Saharan Africa are typically extrapolated from high-income settings, yet sepsis in sub-Saharan Africa is likely caused by distinct pathogens and may require novel treatment strategies. A scorecard of progress towards measles elimination in 15 west African countries, 2001-19: a retrospective, multicountry analysis of national immunisation coverage and surveillance data.

Background: The WHO Regional Office for the Africa Regional Immunization Technical Advisory Group, in 2011, adopted the measles control and elimination goals for all countries of the African region to achieve in 2015 and 2020 respectively. Our aim was to track the current status of progress towards measles control and elimination milestones across 15 west African countries between 2001 and 2019.

Methods: We did a retrospective multicountry series analysis of national immunisation coverage and case surveillance data from Jan 1, 2001, to Dec 31, 2019.

Adaptation of the small intestine to microbial enteropathogens in Zambian children with stunting.

Environmental enteropathy is a major contributor to growth faltering in millions of children in Africa and South Asia. We carried out a longitudinal, observational and interventional study in Lusaka, Zambia, of 297 children with stunting (aged 2-17 months at recruitment) and 46 control children who had good growth (aged 1-5 months at recruitment). Control children contributed data only at baseline.

Modeling and Design Optimization of a Rotational Soft Robotic System Driven by Double Cone Dielectric Elastomer Actuators.

Dielectric elastomers (DEs) consist of highly compliant electrostatic transducers which can be operated as actuators, by converting an applied high voltage into motion, and as sensors, since capacitive changes can be related to displacement information. A study on the protective effects of taxifolin on human umbilical vein endothelial cells and THP-1 cells damaged by hexavalent chromium: a probable mechanism for preventing cardiovascular disease induced by heavy metals.

Hexavalent chromium [Cr(vi)] which is a kind of heavy metal with strong oxidizing ability can induce cardiovascular disease (CVD), while taxifolin can protect cells and organisms against suffering from oxidative stress. In this study, the inhibitory effects of taxifolin against Cr(vi)-induced cell damage in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and THP-1 cells were investigated. Cr(vi) could increase the phosphorylation of p38 and JNK, regulate the expression of Bax and Bcl-2 in both cell lines.
