Background: It has been described that the etiology of epidermal cysts on acral skin is different from that on non-acral skin; however, no papers have been published regarding the detailed histological differences between acral and non-acral epidermal cysts. In this study, we compared the clinicopathologic findings of epidermal cysts of the sole with those of traditional epidermal cysts and trichilemmal cysts.

Methods: The cases studied were 12 epidermal cysts of the sole, 35 traditional (non-acral) epidermal cysts, and 12 trichilemmal cysts.

Cervical inlet patch (CIP) is defined by the presence of gastric mucosa within the first few centimeters of the esophagus. Several endoscopic series have demonstrated a frequent association of CIP with Barrett's esophagus (BE) suggesting a pathogenetic link. A histochemical study reporting the presence of acid mucin in CIP, including sulfomucin, supports this hypothesis.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate histologically the reaction of soft and hard tissues in rats toward a composite membrane consisting of oriented needle-like apatite crystals and biodegradable copolymer. Histological findings regarding the soft tissue reaction showed that the membrane with or without apatite was covered by fibrous connective tissue at four weeks after implantation. In the case of hard tissue, the defect in dura mater--which was covered with an apatite-containing membrane--was fully filled with new bone at four weeks after implantation.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the flexural properties of denture base resin reinforced using glass fiber cloth and a urethane oligomer. The five types of oligomer used in this study were S5, S9, S3, U4, and U6, which have varying functional groups and viscosities. The flexural properties of S9 with glass fiber cloth could not be measured because S9 is elastic.

Article Synopsis
  • Ascidians are hermaphroditic organisms that release both sperm and eggs at the same time, but many species can't self-fertilize due to a recognition system that differentiates between self and non-self during fertilization.
  • Researchers identified a protein called HrVC70, which is crucial for this recognition process, found in higher amounts in self-sterile mature oocytes compared to self-fertile immature ones, and can be released through acid treatment.
  • The study also revealed genetic diversity in HrVC70 among individuals, indicating it plays a significant role in preventing self-fertilization and promoting compatibility in gamete interactions within the ascidian species Halocynthia roretzi.

Fluoroquinolones are known to cause acute renal failure because of interstitial nephritis with or without epithelioid granulomas. We report the first case of slowly progressive renal failure caused by crystal-forming chronic interstitial nephritis with non-Langerhans' cell histiocytosis after long-term exposure to a fluoroquinolone, tosufloxacin tosilate. Lesions consisted of spindle- to cuboidal-shaped histiocytes with minimal collagenous matrix and low-level lymphocyte infiltration replacing normal tubulointerstitial structure of the kidney.

The efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) is currently evaluated for the treatment of superficial neoplasms arising in Barrett's esophagus (BE). An accurate assessment of this technique requires the evaluation of biopsies before and after treatment. However, despite the importance of pathology, only a limited number of studies have systematically assessed the mucosal changes after PDT.

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) provides biochemical profiles containing overlapping signals from a majority of the compounds that are present when whole cells are analyzed. Leaf samples of seven higher plant species and varieties were subjected to FTIR to determine whether plants can be discriminated phylogenetically on the basis of biochemical profiles. A hierarchical dendrogram based on principal component analysis (PCA) of FTIR data showed relationships between plants that were in agreement with known plant taxonomy.

1-Methyl-4-phenylpyridinium ion (MPP(+)), an active metabolite of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine, induces cell death and inhibition of cell proliferation in various cells. However, the mechanism whereby MPP(+) inhibits cell proliferation is still unclear. In this study, we found that MPP(+) suppressed the proliferation with accumulation in G(1) phase without inducing cell death in p53-deficient MG63 osteosarcoma cells.

In order to examine the possible participation of trypsin-like proteases in the onset and progress of muscular dystrophy, we investigated the expression of the trypsin-like protease in muscular tissues in mdx mice. We found that the mRNAs of several trypsin-like proteases, including hepsin and t-PA, were expressed in the muscular tissues of mdx mice, but at levels not significantly different from normal mice. Since the enzymatic properties of dystrypsin, a muscle trypsin-like protease activated before onset of the disease, are similar to those of thrombin, we investigated the expression pattern of thrombin in mdx mouse muscles.
