Background: This study was designed to determine the Human papillomavirus (HPV) prevalence and its distribution of genotypes in various regions of Yunnan Province, China.
Method: In this study, participants were recruited during routine gynecologic examination between Oct 2013 and Feb 2015. A total of 17,898 women were recruited.
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized by mood, vegetative, cognitive, and even psychotic symptoms and signs that can cause substantial impairments in quality of life and functioning. Up to now, the exact pathogenesis of MDD remains poorly understood. Recent research has begun to reveal that the pro-inflammatory cytokines, particularly, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), play an integral role in the pathophysiology of depressive disorders and the mechanism of antidepressant treatment.

Although several drugs such as bisphosphonates, estrogen replacement treatment, and selective estrogen receptor modulators have been used to treat osteoporosis, all these are not the ideal drugs because of insufficient curative ability and adverse side effects. Recently, atorvastatin has ordinarily been prescribed as an anti-hyperlipidemia drug, not as an anti-osteoporosis drug.

Despite the clinical significance of ENE, there are no stringent criteria for its microscopic diagnosis, and its identification is subject to inter-observer variability. The objective of this study was to determine the level of agreement among expert pathologists in the identification of ENE in PTC cases.

Objective: To evaluate clinical outcomes, refine diagnostic criteria, and develop a nomenclature that appropriately reflects the biological and clinical characteristics of EFVPTC.
Design, Setting, And Participants: International, multidisciplinary, retrospective study of patients with thyroid nodules diagnosed as EFVPTC, including 109 patients with noninvasive EFVPTC observed for 10 to 26 years and 101 patients with invasive EFVPTC observed for 1 to 18 years.
Background: The Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology has developed a set of guidelines for respiratory cytology including indications for cytologic testing, techniques for cytologic sampling, terminology and nomenclature for respiratory diseases, ancillary testing, and recommendations for postcytologic diagnosis follow-up and management.
Methods: All documents are based on the expertise of the authors, an extensive literature review and discussions of the draft documents at national and international meetings over a 12-month period. This document selectively presents the results of these discussions and reports a proposed standardized terminology scheme for respiratory cytology that correlates cytologic diagnosis with biologic behavior and patient management.
Background: Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) has proven its value as an essential step in the diagnosis of salivary gland lesions. Although the majority of salivary gland lesions, especially those that are common and benign, can be diagnosed with ease on FNAC, limited cellularity and morphologic lesion heterogeneity can pose diagnostic challenges and lead to false-positive and false-negative diagnoses. This study presents the institutional experience of FNAC of salivary gland lesions from 2 academic centers.

Minimal extrathyroidal extension (mETE) is characterized by involvement of the sternothyroid muscle or perithyroid soft tissue, and is generally identified by light microscope examination. Patients with mETE, identified pathologically, are automatically upstaged to pT3.

We propose a patient safety curriculum for anatomic pathology (AP) residents based on our institutional experience. The Hospital of the University of the Pennsylvania employs a self-reporting safety database.

The aim was to address the inconsistent and sometimes confusing reporting terminologies used for thyroid FNA throughout the world. The TBSRTC consists of 6 diagnostic categories, each associated with an implied risk of malignancy that translates directly into a clinical management algorithm.

This is often accomplished by using cell block specimens and/or fine-needle aspiration (FNA) smear preparations. In this study, the authors investigated the feasibility, performance, and quality of "residual" FNA rinse and body effusion fluids used for next-generation sequencing (NGS).

Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) slides of the tumor were reviewed to confirm areas with at least 25 % of tumor cellularity. Then, the designated area was extracted for genomic DNA.

Unexpectedly, a large-scale outbreak of dengue virus (DENV) infection occurred from August to December 2013, with 1538 documented cases. In the current study, 81 dengue-positive patient samples were collected from Xishuangbanna, the southernmost prefecture of the Yunnan province, and 23 from Dehong, the westernmost prefecture of the Yunnan province.

In this study, we utilized targeted next-generation sequencing to investigate the molecular alterations in a heterogeneous group of clinically aggressive OFC. A total of 12 cases of OFC were included in this study.

This study assesses the potential impact of such a reclassification on the implied risk of malignancy (ROM) for the diagnostic categories of The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology (TBSRTC).
Methods: The study consisted of consecutive fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) cases collected between January 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014 from 5 academic institutions.
Thyroid tissue is a relatively frequent component of mature teratoma and can occur in 5-20 % of cases. Struma ovarii is defined as ovarian goiter which comprises either entirely or predominantly thyroid tissue (>50 %). This also includes cases of mature teratoma with less than 50 % thyroid tissue but harboring thyroid-associated malignancy.

To assess the prevalence and genotype distribution of HPV among three ethnic groups in two geographic locations in north-western Yunnan, we recruited 522 women in Shangri-le (n = 255) and Lijiang (n = 267). PCR amplification of HPV DNA was performed on cervical cells from these women using two consensus primer systems (MY09/11 and GP5/6).

This paper updates the histopathology and cytopathology of thyroid tumors and proliferations derived from the para-follicular or C cells. Beginning with an historical over view, including the recognition of medullary thyroid carcinoma as a distinct histologic entity, its relationship to the hormone, calcitonin, (which was discovered in the same decade) and to thyroid C cells, medullary carcinoma and its variants are reviewed. The molecular biology of the tumors and the associated mutations in the tumors (somatic mutations) are discussed.

The development of this classification specifically did not include tumors with oncocytic or Hürthle cell cytology, and only sparse literature describing poorly differentiated oncocytic carcinomas is available. In this study, we examined a cohort of 284 cases of oncocytic follicular carcinoma/Hürthle cell carcinoma (OFC/HCC) and identified 17 cases of oncocytic variant of poorly differentiated carcinoma (OV-PDTC) based on Turin criteria.

Yunnan has the highest proportion of entry travelers who have transmitted HIV from neighbored Southeast Asian countries to mainland of China.
Methods: Between 2003 and 2012, we recruited 280,961 entry travelers at land ports located in 7 bordering prefectures respectively in the Yunnan Province for HIV-1 screening.
