Objective: To determine differences in plasma sex hormone levels in male and female coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients and healthy volunteers (HVs) because cell entry of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 occurs via the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptor which is downregulated by 17β-estradiol.
Patients And Methods: Citrated plasma samples were collected from 101 patients with COVID-19 upon presentation to the emergency department and from 40 HVs between November 1, 2020, and May 30, 2021. Plasma 17β-estradiol and 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (pg/mL).

Objective: To determine whether time to first postoperative bowel movement after intraperitoneal surgery differs among neuromuscular blockade reversal with either anticholinesterase/anticholinergic combination vs sugammadex.
Patients And Methods: Sugammadex was introduced to our practice in October 2016. Patients were identified who underwent intraperitoneal surgery between January 1, through June 30, 2016, and January 1 through June 30, 2017, and received aminosteroid neuromuscular blockade for paralysis.
Objective The objective of this study was to improve sepsis bundle compliance via an educational intervention in our emergency department (ED). Methods This was a before and after study. Historical data on sepsis bundle compliance was obtained from our quality officer.

An aspect that we propose affects LOS is the order for urine sample collection and subsequent urinalysis (UA) as both are time consuming steps. This project's primary goals are to determine if ordering a UA increases LOS and how often UA contributes to clinical decision-making and/or disposition decisions in the ED.

Our objective was to evaluate the PFCCS course as a tool for developing a uniform, reproducible, and sustainable model for educating local health-care workers in the optimal management of critically ill children in the Republic of Georgia. Over a period of 18 months and four visits to the country, we worked with Georgian pediatric critical care leadership to complete the following tasks: (1) survey health-care needs within the Republic of Georgia, (2) present representative PFCCS lectures and simulation scenarios to evaluate interest and obtain "buy-in" from key stakeholders throughout the Georgian educational infrastructure, and (3) identify PFCCS instructor candidates.

Objective: To develop and validate a deep neural network to detect AF using smartwatch data.
This work reports on the nanoscale assembly of hybrid lanthanum oxide and silica structures, which form patterns of interfacial dense and porous networks. It was found that increasing the molar ratio of lanthanum nitrate to tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in an acid catalysed sol-gel process alters the expected microporous metal oxide silica structure to a predominantly mesoporous structure above a critical lanthanum concentration. This change manifests itself by the formation of a lanthanum silicate phase, which results from the reaction of lanthanum oxide nanoparticles with the silica matrix.

Methods: Single center study consisting of semi-structured interviews with experienced physicians and nurses. Seventeen intensivists from medical (n = 7), surgical (n = 5), and anesthesia (n = 5) critical care backgrounds, and ten nurses from medical (n = 5) and surgical (n = 5) ICU backgrounds were interviewed.
Background: Major trauma is an independent risk factor for developing venous thromboembolism. While increases in thrombin generation and/or procoagulant microparticles have been detected in other patient groups at greater risk for venous thromboembolism, such as cancer or coronary artery disease, this association has yet to be documented in trauma patients. This pilot study was designed to characterize and quantify thrombin generation and plasma microparticles in individuals early after traumatic injury.

The Core Conflictual Relationship Themes of men and women violent toward their partners and entering psychotherapy, students violent toward their partners, and nonviolent students (n = 84; n = 14 in each of the six groups) were compared. Men and women entering psychotherapy more often had negative Wish elements than others. The wish element was "to be loved" for 11 of the 14 student women violent toward their partners and 5 of the 14 nonviolent student women.

Research has revealed the importance of characteristics of the supporter, the care-recipient, and circumstances of caregiving in the success or failure of community-based care of older people. The Dundee Study of Carers and Dementia examined factors associated with the maintenance and care of older people in the community, and with the impact of dementia on family supporters. Two hundred and twenty-eight family supporters of community-resident older people (>/=65) (50% with dementia, 50% without, matched for age and sex) were interviewed.

All patients who had undergone surgery for TOS at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics between 1988 and 1999 were reviewed. A retrospective chart review of 29 patients (36 operations) was performed.

Methods: Ninety-seven patients were evaluated and divided into two groups: those with and without arteriogram prior to their operation. Duplex scan and arteriogram results were reviewed to determine their effect on the operative plan.
Research into supporters of elderly people with dementia has a brief but significant history. Initially, research sought to establish the nature and extent of the distress that supporters endured in the fulfilment of their caring role. More recently, researchers have turned their attention towards the identification of coping techniques used by supporters in the community.

Although most experience with IABPs has been with acute short-term use, the safe duration of therapy and possible complications of long-term IABP use are uncertain. We evaluated the feasibility, management, and complications associated with long-term IABP therapy.

A census of all relevant services in an area can be used to identify people with mental impairment suggestive of dementia. Two censuses in Tayside, Scotland, were used to test the effectiveness of this method. False positives accounted for 12% of returns.

Summary Background Data: Balloon angioplasty and stenting are being advocated for recurrent stenosis because of the presumption that reoperation is unsafe with poor results.
Methods: The authors retrospectively reviewed their experience with 67 patients undergoing 74 operations for recurrent stenosis in a recent 11-year period.
Background: Coagulopathy is frequently encountered during supraceliac aortic clamping. Patients are routinely heparinized during these operations. This experiment was undertaken to evaluate the effect of supraceliac aortic cross-clamping (XC) on heparin pharmacodynamics.

We hypothesize that systemic treatment with TFPI may limit ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury. Our experiment was designed to evaluate the effects of TFPI on IR in the spinal cord.

Method: Abnormal behaviour symptoms and patterns have been followed, using a carer rating scale and the modified Manifest Abnormality Scale of Goldberg's Clinical Interview Schedule (1970) by the same two consultant psychiatrists in 1975, 1981 and 1992.
