Nitrogen compounds, particularly ammonium, nitrite and nitrate, are a major problem in shrimp production systems. These compounds can accumulate in the aquatic environment and reach harmful or even lethal levels. Thus, monitoring the levels of nitrogenous compounds such as ammonia and studying their effects on the animals are essential.

Gastroesophageal reflux after sleeve gastrectomy: The dimension of the problem.

Sleeve gastrectomy is a safe and effective bariatric surgery in terms of weight loss and longterm improvement or resolution of comorbidities. However, its achilles heel is the possible association with the development with the novo and/or worsening of pre-existing gastroesophageal reflux disease. The anatomical and mechanical changes that this technique induces in the esophagogastric junction, support or contradict this hypothesis.

Is Sleeve Gastrectomy as Effective in Older Patients as in Younger Patients? A Comparative Analysis of Weight Loss, Related Comorbidities, and Medication Requirements.

Background: Bariatric surgery in the older population has been the subject of ongoing debate but several studies have recently demonstrated its short-term advantages in this age group. It is not yet clear, however, whether these benefits are long-lasting.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed patients with morbid obesity who underwent laparoscopy sleeve gastrectomy (LSG).

Mapping solar magnetic fields from the photosphere to the base of the corona.

Routine ultraviolet imaging of the Sun's upper atmosphere shows the spectacular manifestation of solar activity; yet, we remain blind to its main driver, the magnetic field. Here, we report unprecedented spectropolarimetric observations of an active region plage and its surrounding enhanced network, showing circular polarization in ultraviolet (Mg ii & and Mn i) and visible (Fe i) lines. We infer the longitudinal magnetic field from the photosphere to the very upper chromosphere.

Alternative methods for the pilot-scale production and characterization of chitosan nanoparticles.

This work describes the production/characterization of low molar mass chitosan nanoparticles derived from waste shrimp shells (SSC), as well as from a commercial chitosan (CC). The production of low molar mass nanochitosan employed thermal shock, alternating between 100 °C and ambient temperature, followed by grinding the dry material (SSC and CC) in a ball mill, producing around 500 g of nanochitosan per batch. A highlight of the methodology employed is that it enables nanochitosan to be obtained even from a low quality commercial raw material.

Veterans Engaged in Treatment, Skills, and Transitions for Enhancing Psychiatric Safety (VETSTEPS).

Objective: The transition after inpatient psychiatric care is a critical time with increased risk. This brief report evaluates Veterans Engaged in Treatment, Skills, and Transitions for Enhancing Psychiatric Safety (VETSTEPS), a program designed for this critical time.

Method: Three "bridging" strategies were employed: (a) using inpatient-outpatient care collaboration; (b) four phone calls within seven days of discharge; and (c) a 4-week, evidence-based intervention that provided safety planning, coping skills, and triage services for postdischarge needs.

Aquaculture has shown great growth in the last decades. Due to the restrictions on water use, production systems are becoming increasingly more intensive, raising concerns about the production water quality. Macrobrachium amazonicum is among the freshwater prawn species with favorable characteristics for production and possibility of intensification.

This study determined the effects of nitrite on different life stages of the Amazon river prawn Macrobrachium amazonicum. Prawns of each life stage (postlarvae, juveniles and adults) were stocked in 24 experimental units (n = 10 prawns), under a complete randomized design. Individuals were exposed to nitrite (0, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 mg L).

The inflammasome pathway in stable COPD and acute exacerbations.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterised by pulmonary and systemic inflammation that bursts during exacerbations of the disease (ECOPD). The NLRP3 inflammasome is a key regulatory molecule of the inflammatory response. Its role in COPD is unclear.

Infrared thermography is useful for ruling out fractures in paediatric emergencies.

Unlabelled: Musculoskeletal injuries are a leading cause of paediatric injuries and emergency department visits in Western countries. Diagnosis usually involves radiography, but this exposes children without fractures to unnecessary ionising radiation. We explored whether infrared thermography could provide a viable alternative in trauma cases.

HIV prevention interventions to reduce sexual risk for African Americans: the influence of community-level stigma and psychological processes.

Interventions to improve public health may benefit from consideration of how environmental contexts can facilitate or hinder their success. We examined the extent to which efficacy of interventions to improve African Americans' condom use practices was moderated by two indicators of structural stigma-Whites' attitudes toward African Americans and residential segregation in the communities where interventions occurred. A previously published meta-analytic database was re-analyzed to examine the interplay of community-level stigma with the psychological processes implied by intervention content in influencing intervention efficacy.

Continuous positive airway pressure as treatment for systemic hypertension in people with obstructive sleep apnoea: randomised controlled trial.

Objective: To assess the effect of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring values in a large number of patients with untreated systemic hypertension of new onset and obstructive sleep apnoea.

Design: Multicentre, double blind, randomised, placebo controlled trial.

Setting: Eleven general hospitals in Spain between 2004 and 2007.

Bronchiectasis in primary Sjögren's syndrome: prevalence and clinical significance.

Objectives: To analyse the prevalence and clinical significance of bronchiectasis in a large series of patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS) and evaluate its impact on disease expression and outcomes.

Methods: The study cohort included 507 patients with primary SS. Bronchiectasis were diagnosed according to pulmonary computed tomography (CT).

Changes in management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in primary care: EMMEPOC study.

Background: Changes in management of COPD in primary care were studied following a training exercise among Spanish general practitioners (GPs). The exercise involved dissemination of the Spanish Society for Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR) guidelines. The use of a portable device to perform spirometry tests was evaluated to adequately categorize COPD and reduce other diagnostic interventions.

Management of sleep apnea: concordance between nonreference and reference centers.

Background: When a disorder is as prevalent as sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (SAHS), different medical levels and approaches should be involved in facilitating the diagnosis, at least, of patients with symptoms that disrupt social or working life, and of risk groups such as professional drivers. We sought to analyze the degree of concordance between management and treatment decisions for SAHS patients at sleep reference centers (RCs) and at non-RCs (NRCs).

Materials And Methods: Eighty-eight consecutive patients with suspected SAHS were referred by family doctors to the NRC.

Cardiac function after CPAP therapy in patients with chronic heart failure and sleep apnea: a multicenter study.

Background And Purpose: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is an effective treatment for sleep apnea (SA), although the evidence for improving chronic heart failure (CHF) is inconclusive. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of CPAP treatment on the left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF) among other cardiological variables in a randomized, multicenter, placebo (sham-CPAP)-controlled study.

Methods: After the selection procedure, 60 patients with CHF with LVEF<45% and SA with an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI)>10/h were evaluated at baseline, and after 3 months of treatment with optimal CPAP or sham-CPAP.

Pulmonary varices are uncommon vascular abnormalities that are usually asymptomatic and so they are normally diagnosed by chance from a chest x-ray. They often present as a pulmonary nodule and can be either congenital or acquired. If acquired, they are associated with pulmonary venous hypertension, usually as a result of mitral valve disease.

Physiological consequences of prolonged periods of flow limitation in patients with sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome.

Flow limitation during sleep occurs when the rise in esophageal pressure is not accompanied by a flow increase which results in a non-rounded inspiratory flow shape. Short periods of flow limitation ending in an arousal or in a fall in SaO2 (hypopnea or upper airway resistance syndrome) are detrimental but the role of prolonged periods of flow limitation (PPFL) has not yet been clarified. This is important not only for diagnosis but also for nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) titration, especially for the automatic devices that need to be setup.

After the detection of Shigella sonnei in a stool sample from a 3 year old girl, an investigation at her school was initiated.

Mortality in Spain during the heat waves of summer 2003.

The effect of the elevated temperatures on mortality experienced in Europe during the summer of 2003 was observed in several countries. This study, carried out in Spain, describes mortality between 1 June and 31 August and evaluates the effect of the heat wave on mortality. Observed deaths were obtained from official death registers from 50 provincial capitals.
