Background: Indications and outcomes for percutaneous ventricular assist device (pVAD) use in surgically ineligible patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) remain poorly characterized.

Aims: We sought to describe the use and timing of pVAD and outcome in surgically ineligible patients.

Methods: Among 726 patients enrolled in the prospective OPTIMUM study, clinical and health status outcomes were assessed in patients who underwent pVAD-assisted PCI and those without pVAD.

Novel 3D-printed foot orthoses with variable hardness: A comfort comparison to traditional orthoses.

Custom foot orthoses are used to treat a variety of foot pathologies. However, orthotic production requires significant hands-on fabrication time and expertise to produce orthoses that are both comfortable and effective. This paper introduces a novel 3D printed orthosis and fabrication method that utilizes custom architectures to produce variable-hardness regions.

Outcomes of Medical Therapy Plus PCI for Multivessel or Left Main CAD Ineligible for Surgery.

Background: Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is increasingly used to revascularize patients ineligible for CABG, but few studies describe these patients and their outcomes.

Objectives: This study sought to describe characteristics, utility of risk prediction, and outcomes of patients with left main or multivessel coronary artery disease ineligible for coronary bypass grafting (CABG).

Methods: Patients with complex coronary artery disease ineligible for CABG were enrolled in a prospective registry of medical therapy + PCI.

Kidney disease risk factors do not explain impacts of low dietary protein on kidney function and structure.

The kidneys balance many byproducts of the metabolism of dietary components. Previous studies examining dietary effects on kidney health are generally of short duration and manipulate a single macronutrient. Here, kidney function and structure were examined in C57BL/6J mice randomized to consume one of a spectrum of macronutrient combinations (protein [5%-60%], carbohydrate [20%-75%], and fat [20%-75%]) from weaning to late-middle age (15 months).

Pandemics, Protests, and Pronouns: The Changing Landscape of Biomedical Visualisation and Education.

Events in early 2020 changed the landscape of education for the foreseeable future, perhaps permanently. Three events had a significant impact; (1) the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, (2) the death of George Floyd, which resulted in the most recent Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests, and (3) the Twitter storm, the resultant societal fallout and freedom of speech campaigns, following comments made by author JK Rowling which many deemed transphobic. These events had a differential impact on biomedical sciences, when compared to other sectors.

Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension in Pregnancy.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension is a rare disease that predominantly affects women. The pathophysiology of the disease is complex, with both genetic and hormonal influences. Pregnancy causes significant physiologic changes that may not be well tolerated with underlying pulmonary arterial hypertension, in particular leading to volume overload and increased pulmonary pressures.

Safe Ambulation of Critically Ill Cardiac Patients With Femoral Balloon Pumps: A Case Cohort Study.

We sought to demonstrate the safety of ambulation of patients with intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABPs) inserted via the femoral approach in the setting of 1 cardiovascular surgical intensive care unit and 1 cardiac care unit. We studied 70 patients who had received femoral IABPs at our institution between December 2015 and June 2019 and who met standardized criteria for ambulation. These patients underwent initial standing trials with a specialty standing bed/tilt table and progressed to standing exercises and, ultimately, to ambulation (defined as covering a distance of at least 10 feet) with the physical therapist.

Exploring the Steric and Electronic Factors Governing the Regio- and Enantioselectivity of the Pd-Catalyzed Decarboxylative Generation and Allylation of 2-Azaallyl Anions.

The impact of the steric and electronic factors in both the para-substituted benzaldimine and 2,2-diarylglycine components on the regioselectivity and enantioselectivity of the palladium-catalyzed decarboxylative allylation of allyl 2,2-diarylglycinate aryl imines was explored. These studies revealed that using 2,2-di(2-methoxyphenyl)glycine as the amino acid linchpin allowed for the exclusive synthesis of the desired homoallylic benzophenone imine regioisomers, independent of the nature of the imine moiety, in typically high yields. The resulting enantiomeric ratios, however, are slightly decreased in comparison to the transformations involving the corresponding allyl 2,2-diphenylglycinate imines, but this is more than balanced out by the increases in yield and regioselectivity.

Prospective, head-to-head comparison of quantitative coronary angiography, quantitative computed tomography angiography, and intravascular ultrasound for the prediction of hemodynamic significance in intermediate and severe lesions, using fractional flow reserve as reference standard (from the ATLANTA I and II Study).

The objective of this study was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of quantitative coronary angiography (QCA), coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA), and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) with fractional flow reserve (FFR) measurements. Eighty-five lesions (40% to 99% diameter stenosis) in 85 patients were prospectively interrogated by QCA, CTA, IVUS, and FFR. Minimal lumen diameter (MLD), percent diameter stenosis (%DS), minimal lumen area (MLA), and percent area stenosis (%AS) were measured.

Prospective validation that vulnerable plaque associated with major adverse outcomes have larger plaque volume, less dense calcium, and more non-calcified plaque by quantitative, three-dimensional measurements using intravascular ultrasound with radiofrequency backscatter analysis : results from the ATLANTA I Study.

Whether quantitative, two-dimensional, and three-dimensional plaque measurements by intravascular ultrasound with radiofrequency backscatter (IVUS/VH) are different between intermediate lesions with or without major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) is unknown. IVUS/VH-derived parameters were compared in 60 patients with an intermediate coronary lesion (40-70 %) between lesions that did or did not result in MACE over 12 months. IVUS/VH measurements were done at the site of the minimal lumen area (MLA) and on a per-plaque basis, defined by 40 % plaque burden.

Methods: Sixty patients in a prospective study underwent coronary X-ray angiography, IVUS/VH, and coronary CTA.

Possible vector dissemination by swift foxes following a plague epizootic in black-tailed prairie dogs in northwestern Texas.

To determine whether swift foxes (Vulpes velox) could facilitate transmission of Yersinia pestis to uninfected black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colonies by acquiring infected fleas, ectoparasite and serologic samples were collected from swift foxes living adjacent to prairie dog towns during a 2004 plague epizootic in northwestern Texas, USA. A previous study (1999-2001) indicated that these swift foxes were infested almost exclusively with the flea Pulex irritans. Black-tailed prairie dogs examined from the study area harbored only Pulex simulans and Oropsylla hirsuta.

Two cases of late embolization of Amplatzer septal occluder devices to the pulmonary artery following closure of secundum atrial septal defects.

The Amplatzer septal occluder (ASO; AGA Medical Corporation) is a self-expanding nitinol double-disk device that is being used for atrial septal defect closure with increasing frequency. The morbidity of the procedure is thought to be low, but complications are possible. We describe two cases of delayed embolization of the device to the right heart.

Ectoparasites of the swift fox in northwestern Texas.

Ectoparasites were collected from chemically immobilized swift foxes (Vulpes velox) in the Texas Panhandle (USA). Three species of fleas (Pulex irritans, Dactylopsylla percernis, and Euhoplopsyllus affinis) and one species of tick (Ixodes sculptus) were found. Pulex irritans was the only abundant ectoparasite; it occurred on all 23 foxes brushed in 1999-2000 and all but one of 34 hosts examined in 2000-01.

Relatively recent descriptions of development exist for the teleost fishes, bowfin, sturgeon, paddlefish and bichirs. Such literature dealing with the gars is to be found in older work, done approximately a century ago.

Rabies and canine distemper in an arctic fox population in Alaska.

Two oil field workers were attacked by a rabid arctic fox (Alopex lagopus) in the Prudhoe Bay oil field (Alaska, USA) prompting officials to reduce the local fox population. Ninety-nine foxes were killed during winter 1994. We tested foxes for prevalence of rabies and canine distemper.

Phase II trial of 9-aminocamptothecin administered as a 72-hour continuous infusion in metastatic colorectal carcinoma.

Purpose: The camptothecin derivative irinotecan has demonstrated clinical activity in metastatic colorectal carcinoma in both chemotherapy-naive and fluorouracil-refractory patients. 9-Aminocamptothecin (9-AC; NSC 603071), another camptothecin derivative, was selected for clinical development based on preclinical activity, including cures in human tumor xenografts resistant to standard anticancer agents. We report a phase II trial of 9-AC in patients with previously untreated metastatic colorectal carcinoma.
