Environmental Exposures Associated with Enteropathogen Infection in Six-Month-Old Children Enrolled in the ECoMiD Cohort along a Rural-Urban Gradient in Northern Ecuador†.

Enteropathogens are major contributors to mortality and morbidity, particularly in settings with limited access to water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure. To assess transmission pathways associated with enteropathogen infection, we measured household environmental conditions and assayed 22 enteropathogens using TaqMan Array Cards in stool samples from 276 six-month-old children living in communities along a rural-urban gradient in Northern Ecuador. We utilized multivariable models, risk factor importance, and distance-based statistical methods to test factors associated with infection.

Cold and vibration for children undergoing needle-related procedures: A non-inferiority randomized clinical trial.

The use of a rapid, easy-to-use intervention could improve needle-related procedural pain management practices in the context of the Emergency Department (ED). As such, the Buzzy device seems to be a promising alternative to topical anesthetics. The aim of this study was to determine if a cold vibrating device was non-inferior to a topical anesthetic cream for pain management in children undergoing needle-related procedures in the ED.

Rural houselessness among people who use drugs in the United States: Results from the National Rural Opioid Initiative.

Background: Over the last two decades, houselessness and drug-related epidemics both have expanded from urban to rural regions across the United States (US). However, our understanding of the relationship between rural houselessness, drug use, and drug-related harms has not kept pace. The current study addresses this gap by describing houselessness among a large cohort of people who use drugs (PWUD) from rural communities across 10 states.

From Etiology to Intervention: A Holistic Review of Bunion Pathophysiology and Care.

In this review paper, we present the common etiology, presentation, diagnosis, and management of the following three common bunion formations: dorsal bunion, tailor's bunion, and hallux valgus (HV). Bunions are common pathologies that present to a variety of clinics, so it is important for providers to have a base understanding of these in order to provide the best care to patients. Many of these bunion formations have a variety of causes which allow providers to manage them before surgical intervention is required.

Systematic re-review of WASH trials to assess women's engagement in intervention delivery and research activities.

Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions significantly reduce health risks in low- and middle-income countries. Many rely on women, but the extent of women's engagement remains undocumented. Here we conducted a re-review of papers from two systematic reviews that assessed the effectiveness of water, sanitation and/or handwashing with soap interventions on diarrhoeal disease and acute respiratory infections to assess women's roles in WASH research and intervention activities.

The development and validation of a survey to measure fecal-oral child exposure to zoonotic enteropathogens: The FECEZ Enteropathogens Index.

Child exposure to animal feces and associated enteropathogens contribute to a significant burden of disease in low- and middle-income countries. However, there are no standardized, validated survey-based approaches to enable accurate assessment of child exposure to zoonotic enteropathogens. We developed and validated a survey-based measure of exposure, the fecal-oral child exposure to zoonotic enteropathogens Index (the FECEZ Enteropathogens Index).

Escaping the benthos with Coral Reef Arks: effects on coral translocation and fish biomass.

Anthropogenic stressors like overfishing, land based runoff, and increasing temperatures cause the degradation of coral reefs, leading to the loss of corals and other calcifiers, increases in competitive fleshy algae, and increases in microbial pathogen abundance and hypoxia. To test the hypothesis that corals would be healthier by moving them off the benthos, a common garden experiment was conducted in which corals were translocated to midwater geodesic spheres (hereafter called Coral Reef Arks or Arks). Integrating Social Drivers of Health into Hospital Ratings with Application to the 100 Top Hospitals Study.

The objective was to investigate the relationship between social drivers of health (SDOH) and hospital performance within the 100 Top Hospitals study, exploring methods to recognize hospitals serving marginalized communities. Publicly available data sourced from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the 2023 100 Top Hospitals study was used. The study employed multivariable hierarchical generalized linear regression models to assess the association between an SDOH composite variable derived using principal component analysis and overall hospital performance measures within the 100 Top Hospitals study.

Accurate structure prediction of biomolecular interactions with AlphaFold 3.

The introduction of AlphaFold 2 has spurred a revolution in modelling the structure of proteins and their interactions, enabling a huge range of applications in protein modelling and design. Here we describe our AlphaFold 3 model with a substantially updated diffusion-based architecture that is capable of predicting the joint structure of complexes including proteins, nucleic acids, small molecules, ions and modified residues. The new AlphaFold model demonstrates substantially improved accuracy over many previous specialized tools: far greater accuracy for protein-ligand interactions compared with state-of-the-art docking tools, much higher accuracy for protein-nucleic acid interactions compared with nucleic-acid-specific predictors and substantially higher antibody-antigen prediction accuracy compared with AlphaFold-Multimer v.

Objectives: In 30 years, monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICPIs) have enhanced cancer survival and quality of life. Limited knowledge exists regarding the long-term risks of repeated exposure, especially for cancer nurses, who prepare and administer them. This systematic review aimed to identify influences shaping clinicians' awareness and practices in the safe preparation and administration of mAbs and ICPIs.

Quasiparticle Poisoning of Superconducting Qubits from Resonant Absorption of Pair-Breaking Photons.

The ideal superconductor provides a pristine environment for the delicate states of a quantum computer: because there is an energy gap to excitations, there are no spurious modes with which the qubits can interact, causing irreversible decay of the quantum state. As a practical matter, however, there exists a high density of excitations out of the superconducting ground state even at ultralow temperature; these are known as quasiparticles. Observed quasiparticle densities are of order 1  μm^{-3}, tens of orders of magnitude greater than the equilibrium density expected from theory.

Houselessness and syringe service program utilization among people who inject drugs in eight rural areas across the USA: a cross-sectional analysis.

Background: Research conducted in urban areas has highlighted the impact of housing instability on people who inject drugs (PWID), revealing that it exacerbates vulnerability to drug-related harms and impedes syringe service program (SSP) use. However, few studies have explored the effects of houselessness on SSP use among rural PWID. This study examines the relationship between houselessness and SSP utilization among PWID in eight rural areas across 10 states.

Community Health Workers During COVID-19: Supporting Their Role in Current and Future Public Health Responses.

Community health workers advance health equity and foster community-clinical linkages. By promoting culturally relevant care, sharing their own stories, and bridging gaps, they can reach populations burdened with higher rates of chronic diseases due to adverse social determinants of health and structural racism. Given the disproportionate impacts of COVID-19, lessons learned from a forum, an expert group, and a survey showed a need by community health workers for (1) training, (2) health and safety practices, (3) workplace guidance, and (4) mental health resources.

Measurement in the study of human exposure to animal feces: A systematic review and audit.

Background: Human exposure to animal feces is increasingly recognized as an important transmission route of enteric pathogens. Yet, there are no consistent or standardized approaches to measurement of this exposure, limiting assessment of the human health effects and scope of the issue.

Objective: To inform and improve approaches to the measurement of human exposure to animal feces, we audited existing measurement in low- and middle-income countries.

Coral Reef Arks: An In Situ Mesocosm and Toolkit for Assembling Reef Communities.

Coral reefs thrive and provide maximal ecosystem services when they support a multi-level trophic structure and grow in favorable water quality conditions that include high light levels, rapid water flow, and low nutrient levels. Poor water quality and other anthropogenic stressors have caused coral mortality in recent decades, leading to trophic downgrading and the loss of biological complexity on many reefs. Solutions to reverse the causes of trophic downgrading remain elusive, in part because efforts to restore reefs are often attempted in the same diminished conditions that caused coral mortality in the first place.

Phonon downconversion to suppress correlated errors in superconducting qubits.

Quantum error correction can preserve quantum information in the presence of local errors, but correlated errors are fatal. For superconducting qubits, high-energy particle impacts from background radioactivity produce energetic phonons that travel throughout the substrate and create excitations above the superconducting ground state, known as quasiparticles, which can poison all qubits on the chip. We use normal metal reservoirs on the chip back side to downconvert phonons to low energies where they can no longer poison qubits.

A qualitative analysis of rural syringe service program fidelity in Appalachian Kentucky: Staff and participant perspectives.

Purpose: As drug-related epidemics have expanded from cities to rural areas, syringe service programs (SSPs) and other harm reduction programs have been slow to follow. The recent implementation of SSPs in rural areas demands attention to program fidelity based on core components of SSP success.

Methods: Semistructured interviews conducted with clients and staff at 5 SSPs in 5 counties within 2 Central Appalachian health districts.
