Background: Roof rats (Rattus rattus) are a substantial pest throughout citrus crops, yet little is known about efficacious, cost-effective strategies to manage this rodent. Therefore, we developed two integrated pest management (IPM) programs that incorporated elevated bait stations containing diphacinone-treated oats and trapping, and we compared those programs to a bait-station only approach to determine which strategies were most practical for the management of roof rats in citrus orchards.

Results: Bait applications substantially reduced rat activity within orchards.

Native ecosystem and biodiversity loss from land use conversion into human-modified landscapes are evident in the United States and globally. In addition to public land conservation, there is an increase in private land conservation through conservation easements (CEs) across exurban landscapes. Not every CE was established strictly for biodiversity protection and permitted land uses can increase human modification.

Background: Children in out-of-home-care (OOHC) are a vulnerable population, typically with complex needs, however there is minimal research examining the behavioural presentations that lead to the increased use of acute emergency care by OOHC children.

Objective: This study aimed to describe differences in lifetime complexity factors identified during ambulance attendances between children with and without an identified history of OOHC. Further, this study aimed to describe whether having an identified history of being in OOHC was associated with increased utilisation of emergency care resources and increased likelihood of multiple ambulance attendances.

Research into mosquito-borne illnesses faces hurdles because feeding fresh animal blood to rear female mosquitoes presents logistical, economic, and safety challenges. In this study, a shelf-stable additive (spray-dried porcine blood; SDPB) hypothesized to supply accessible hemoglobin was evaluated within an alternative meal (AM) containing whey powder and PBS for rearing the yellow fever mosquito . LC-MS/MS proteomics, microbial assays, and particle reduction techniques confirmed and characterized the functionality of hemoglobin in SDPB, while engorgement, fecundity, egg viability, and meal stability bioassays assessed AM performance.

Presence-absence variations (PAVs) are important structural variations, wherein a genomic segment containing one or more genes is present in some individuals but absent in others. While PAVs have been extensively studied in plants, research in cattle remains limited. This study identified PAVs in 173 Holstein bulls using whole-genome sequencing data and assessed their associations with 46 economically important traits.

  • The Northern Territory government re-introduced the Banned Drinker Register (BDR) in 2017 to tackle high alcohol-related harm, while considering other interventions like police presence in bottle shops and minimum alcohol pricing.
  • An analysis of emergency department visits and hospital admissions from January 2014 to December 2019 showed a significant increase in assault and maltreatment cases after the BDR was introduced, but this was not consistent in individual communities.
  • The study concluded that the BDR had minimal effect on reducing assault and maltreatment in children and adolescents, suggesting that a broader approach that combines effective alcohol policies and social interventions is necessary to decrease alcohol-related harm.

During lactation, dairy cattle's digestive tract requires significant adaptations to meet the increased nutrient demands for milk production. As we attempt to improve milk-related traits through selective pressure, it is crucial to understand the biological functions of the epithelia of the rumen, small intestine, and colonic tissues in response to changes in physiological state driven by changes in nutrient demands for milk synthesis. In this study, we obtained a total of 108 transcriptome profiles from three tissues (epithelia of the colon, duodenum, and rumen) of five Holstein cows, spanning eight time points from the early, mid, late lactation periods to the dry period.

Feed efficiency is important for economic profitability of dairy farms; however, recording daily DMI is expensive. Our objective was to investigate the potential use of milk mid-infrared (MIR) spectral data to predict proxy phenotypes for DMI based on different cross-validation schemes. We were specifically interested in comparisons between a model that included only MIR data (model M1); a model that incorporated different energy sink predictors, such as body weight, body weight change, and milk energy (model M2); and an extended model that incorporated both energy sinks and MIR data (model M3).

Large datasets allow estimation of feed required for individual milk components or body maintenance. Phenotypic regressions are useful for nutrition management, but genetic regressions are more useful in breeding programs. Dry matter intake records from 8,513 lactations of 6,621 Holstein cows were predicted from phenotypes or genomic evaluations for milk components and body size traits.

Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are increasingly used in healthcare research to provide evidence of the benefits and risks of interventions from the patient perspective and to inform regulatory decisions and health policy. The use of PROs in clinical practice can facilitate symptom monitoring, tailor care to individual needs, aid clinical decision-making and inform value-based healthcare initiatives. Despite their benefits, there are concerns that the potential burden on respondents may reduce their willingness to complete PROs, with potential impact on the completeness and quality of the data for decision-making.

Muscles consume metabolic energy for force production and movement. A mathematical model of metabolic energy cost will be useful in predicting instantaneous costs during human exercise and in computing effort-minimizing movements via simulations. Previous in vivo data-derived models usually assumed either zero or linearly increasing cost with force, but a nonlinear relation could have significant metabolic or behavioural implications.
