Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) offers a therapeutic approach to urological patients suffering from idiopathic overactive bladder (OAB) syndrome, with or without incontinence and non-obstructive urinary retention (NOR), who are not responding to or are not compliant with conservative or medical therapies. The exact mechanism of action of SNM is not fully understood but modulation of the spinal cord reflexes and brain networks by peripheral afferents is regarded as the main pathway. Over the years, surgical techniques improved, leading to the development of the modern two-stage implantation technique.

A retired oncologist describes the unexpected death of his wife, Claudia, who spent 25 years as head of the geriatrics service of a major VA hospital. The couple drew comfort in their orchestration of a "good death"; nevertheless they understood that her death was hastened by a number of missteps. In the 2 months following a hip fracture, a chain of complications that required five surgical interventions led to massive hemorrhage from necrotizing esophagitis.

There is an enormous drive for moving toward cathode material research in LIBs due to the proposal of zero-emission electric vehicles together with the restriction of cathode materials in design. LiNiMnO (LNMO) attracts great research interests as high-voltage Co-free cathodes in LIBs. However, a more extensive study is required for LNMO due to its poor electrochemical performance, especially at high temperature, because of the instability of the LNMO interface.

Article Synopsis
  • Interdisciplinary oncogeriatric activities are scarce, especially in low-income countries, and there is a lack of focus on elderly cancer patients in major global oncology meetings, aside from the USA.
  • Despite some initiatives by professionals, such as the establishment of the Société Internationale de Oncogeriatrie (SIOG), there are still significant challenges in managing cancer care for older individuals.
  • Key issues include a shortage of geriatricians and clinical oncologists, alongside ageism, which can hinder the development of a comprehensive approach to oncogeriatrics.

Traditional phenological models use chilling and thermal forcing (temperature sum or degree-days) to predict budbreak. Because of the heightening impact of climate and other related biotic or abiotic stressors, a model with greater biological support is needed to better predict budbreak. Here, we present an original mechanistic model based on the physiological processes taking place before and during budbreak of conifers.

Background: Age is a major risk factor for the acute and chronic complications of cancer chemotherapy. The current approach to the prevention of these complications is reactive and involves the reduction of the doses and the delay of treatment which may compromise the outcome. There is a limited number of antidotes to chemotherapy toxicity and these have complications of their own.

Age is associated with the decline of multiple organ systems. In older patients, hematological toxicities associated with chemotherapy are often dose limiting, impairing dose intensity and treatment efficacy. Contrary to the classical path using growth factors to activate tissue regeneration, a novel strategy is emerging to prevent chemotherapy toxicity that involves temporary cell-cycle arrest of normal cells, such as hematopoietic or epithelial precursors.

Purpose Of Review: To explore the effectiveness of trilaciclib and ALRN-6924 in the prevention of cancer chemotherapy-induced toxicity in older patients. New chemoprotective agents are necessary because age is the main risk factor for chemotherapy complications that account largely for the poorer outcome of cancer in the elderly. Trilaciclib and ALRN-6924 cause a reversible block of the proliferation of normal cells through cell cycle arrest (CCA).

Ultrafast structural dynamics with different spatial and temporal scales were investigated during photodissociation of carbon monoxide (CO) from iron(II)-heme in bovine myoglobin during the first 3 ps following laser excitation. We used simultaneous X-ray transient absorption (XTA) spectroscopy and X-ray transient solution scattering (XSS) at an X-ray free electron laser source with a time resolution of 80 fs. Kinetic traces at different characteristic X-ray energies were collected to give a global picture of the multistep pathway in the photodissociation of CO from heme.

The knowledge of Geriatric Oncology requires some information on her history. Thanks to the effort of investigators throughout the world, embattled but undeterred by the objection of a cautious establishment, geriatric oncology has provided a blueprint for the treatment of the most common form of cancer: cancer in the older person. The history of Geriatric Oncology may be divided in three periods: Prehistory,Past and Contemporay history.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness and safety of algenpantucel-L immunotherapy combined with standard chemotherapy and chemoradiation against standard treatment alone in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer.
  • Results showed no significant difference in overall survival between the two groups, with median survival times being similar (14.9 months for standard vs. 14.3 months for experimental).
  • Adverse events were common in both groups, indicating that adding algenpantucel-L did not provide additional benefits in terms of survival or safety compared to standard treatment alone.

  • Photoinduced charge-transfer is vital in nature and tech, leading to unique features like magnetic order in bimetallic networks, but understanding the rapid initial process has been challenging.
  • Researchers investigated this process in a cyanide-bridged CoFe system using femtosecond X-ray and optical absorption spectroscopies.
  • The findings reveal that the spin transition on the Co site happens first in about 50 femtoseconds, which triggers charge transfer from Fe to Co within approximately 200 femtoseconds, laying groundwork for better control of charge-transfer functions with light.

Purpose Of Review: Recognize which are the elements that predict why a person is aging faster or slower and which intervention we can arrange to slow down the process, which permits to prevent or delay the progression of multimorbidity and disability.

Recent Findings: Aging is a complex process that leads to changes in all the systems of the body and all the functions of the person; however, aging develops at different rates in different people, and chronological age is not always consistent with biological age. Gerontologists are focused not only on finding the best theory able to explain aging but also on identifying one or more markers, which are able to describe aging processes.
