Lymphatic vessels (LVs) play a pivotal role in the control of tissue homeostasis and also have emerged as important regulators of immunity, inflammation and tumor metastasis. EMILIN-1 is the first ECM protein identified as a structural modulator of the growth and maintenance of LV; accordingly, Emilin1 mice display lymphatic morphological alterations leading to functional defects as mild lymphedema, leakage and compromised lymph drainage. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether exposure to particles induces an imbalance in 70-kDa heat shock proteins (HSP70). Since intracellularly (iHSP70) it has anti-inflammatory roles whereas extracellularly (eHSP70) it has pro-inflammatory roles, we evaluate the effect of residual oil fly ash (ROFA) exposure on eHSP70-to-iHSP70 ratio (H index), a biomarker of inflammatory status that is related to oxidative stress in plasma and lymphoid tissue. Wistar rats that received ROFA suspension for three consecutive days (750 μg) showed an increase in plasma eHSP70 levels (mainly the 72-kDa inducible form).

Background: Previous evidence suggests that acute treatment with statins reduce atherosclerotic complications, including periprocedural myocardial infarction, but currently, there are no large, adequately powered studies to define the effects of early, high-dose statins in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and planned invasive management.

Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM) air pollution is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes (T2DM). We argue whether the potentiating effect of PM over the development of T2DM in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice would be related to modification in cell stress response, particularly in antioxidant defenses and 70-kDa heat shock proteins (HSP70) status. Male mice were fed standard chow or HFD for 12 weeks and then randomly exposed to daily nasotropic instillation of PM for additional 12 weeks under the same diet schedule, divided into four groups (n = 14-15 each): Control, PM, HFD, and HFD + PM were evaluated biometric and metabolic profiles of mice, and cellular stress response (antioxidant defense and HSP70 status) of metabolic tissues.

In the present study, the antifungal activity of essential oils obtained from Origanum vulgare (oregano), Cinnamomum zeylanicum (cinnamon), Lippia graveolens (Mexican oregano), Thymus vulgaris (thyme), Salvia officinalis (sage), Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary), Ocimum basilicum (basil) and Zingiber officinale (ginger) were assessed against Candida glabrata isolates. One group contained 30 fluconazole-susceptible C. glabrata isolates, and the second group contained fluconazole-resistant isolates derived from the first group after the in vitro induction of fluconazole-resistance, for a total of 60 tested isolates.

Hot flashes, which involve a tiny rise in core temperature, are the most common complaint of peri- and post-menopausal women, being tightly related to decrease in estrogen levels. On the other hand, estradiol (E2) induces the expression of HSP72, a member of the 70 kDa family of heat shock proteins (HSP70), which are cytoprotective, cardioprotective, and heat inducible. Since HSP70 expression is compromised in age-related inflammatory diseases, we argued whether the capacity of triggering a robust heat shock (HS) response would be still present after E2 withdrawal.

Coupling stability during cyclic arm movements in the horizontal (transverse) plane is lower in ISO- than in ANTI-directional coupling. We proposed that such impairment arises from the interference exerted in ISO by the anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) linked to the primary movements. Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a debilitating clinical condition, characterized by a complex of neurological dysfunctions. It has been shown in rats that the acute administration of recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) following a contusive SCI improves the recovery of hindlimb motor function, as measured with the locomotor BBB (Basso, Beattie, Bresnahan) scale. This scale evaluates overall locomotor activity, without testing whether the rhEPO-induced motor recovery is due to a parallel recovery of sensory and/or motor pathways.

The destruction and hollowing of entire tissue segments represent an insurmountable barrier to axonal regeneration and therapeutics in chronic spinal cord injury. To circumvent this problem, we engineered neural prosthetics, by assembling electrospun nanofibers and self-assembling peptides into composite guidance channels and transplanted them into the cysts of a postcontusive, chronic spinal cord injury rat model, also providing delivery of proregenerative cytokines. Some neural properties of "motor resonance"--the subliminal activation of the motor system when observing actions performed by others--are investigated in humans. Two actions performed with the right hand are observed by experimental subjects: a finalized (transitive) action (reaching for and grasping a ball) and an intransitive action (cyclic up-and-down oscillation of the hand), while the H-reflex and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation techniques are utilized to test the excitability of the observer's motor pathways to hand and forearm muscles (first dorsal interosseus, flexor digitorum superficialis, flexor carpi radialis). Results indicate that motor resonance: (1) is mainly mediated by the primary motor cortex; (2) involves the same forearm muscles as used in the execution of the observed movement; (3) is also recorded in the homologous muscles of the arm contralateral to the one observed; and (4) is evoked by both transitive and intransitive movements of the human hand, but not by similar movements of inanimate objects.

In humans, observation of movement performed by others evokes a subliminal motor resonant response, probably mediated by the mirror neurone system, which reproduces the motor commands needed to execute the observed movement with good spatial and temporal fidelity. Motor properties of the resonant response were here investigated with the ultimate goal of understanding the principles operating in the transformation from observation to internal reproduction of movement. Motor resonance was measured as the modulation of excitability of spinal motoneurones, evoked by the observation of a cyclic flexion-extension of one hand.
