Machine learning for healthcare that matters: Reorienting from technical novelty to equitable impact.

Despite significant technical advances in machine learning (ML) over the past several years, the tangible impact of this technology in healthcare has been limited. This is due not only to the particular complexities of healthcare, but also due to structural issues in the machine learning for healthcare (MLHC) community which broadly reward technical novelty over tangible, equitable impact. We structure our work as a healthcare-focused echo of the 2012 paper "Machine Learning that Matters", which highlighted such structural issues in the ML community at large, and offered a series of clearly defined "Impact Challenges" to which the field should orient itself.

Large-scale DNA sequencing identifies rare variants associated with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus susceptibility in known risk genes.

The identification of rare genetic variants associated to Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) could also help to understand the pathogenic mechanisms at the basis of the disease. In this study we have analyzed a cohort of 200 Italian SLE patients in order to explore the rare protein-coding variants in five genes (TNFAIP3, STAT4, IL10, TRAF3IP2, and HCP5) already investigated for commons variants found associated in our previous studies. Genomic DNA of 200 SLE patients was sequenced by whole exome sequencing.

Depression and obesity among females, are sex specificities considered?

This study aimed to systematically review the relationship of obesity-depression in the female sex. We carried out a systematic search (PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase) to quantify the articles (controlled trials and randomized controlled trials) regarding obesity and depression on a female population or a mixed sample. Successively, we established whether the sex specificities were studied by the authors and if they reported on collecting data regarding factors that may contribute to the evolution of obesity and depression and that could be responsible for the greater susceptibility of females to those conditions.

Saccadic movements assessment in eccentric fixation: A study in patients with Stargardt disease.

Purpose: To investigate saccadic movements in subjects with eccentric fixation due to a deep central scotoma in Stargardt disease (STGD).

Methods: We studied 10 patients with STGD and 10 healthy subjects (control group). Saccadic movements of all the 20 subjects were assessed by using the eye tracker technique Tobii Glasses Pro 2.

Prevalence and Correlates of Vitamin D Deficiency in a Sample of 290 Inpatients With Mental Illness.

Vitamin D inadequacy or deficiency (VDID) has been reported in a high percentage of otherwise healthy individuals. Factors that may contribute to the high prevalence of VDID in people with mental disorders include diet low in vitamin D, poor sunlight exposure, decrease in cutaneous vitamin D synthesis, intake of certain medications, poor mobility, excessive alcohol intake, and tobacco smoking. VDID has been correlated to a host of adverse conditions, including rickets, osteoporosis, osteomalacia, muscle diseases, depression, cognitive dysfunction, and even certain cancers.

Pharmacotherapeutic strategies for treating binge eating disorder. Evidence from clinical trials and implications for clinical practice.

Introduction: Binge eating disorder (BED) is the most common eating disorder and was newly recognized in 2013 in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). BED is frequently associated with obesity and the metabolic syndrome, as well as with other psychiatric diseases, such as mood (49%), anxiety (41%), and substance use (22%) disorders. BED is highly prevalent and carries a high burden of mental and physical illness and disability.

NFκB plays an important role in inflammation and bone remodelling. Tumour necrosis factor receptor associated factor 2 (TRAF2), a key component of NFκB signalling, has been identified as an oncogene, but its role in the regulation of breast cancer osteolytic metastasis remains unknown. Here, we report that stable overexpression of TRAF2 in parental and osteotropic sub-clones of human MDA-MB-231 (MDA-231) breast cancer cells increased cell growth and motility in vitro, whereas TRAF2 knockdown was inhibitory.

TSH-Suppressive Therapy: A Thorny Issue.

Unlabelled: Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)-suppressive therapy with levothyroxine is a cornerstone of thyroid carcinoma follow-up therapy, but the achievement of therapeutic goals must be balanced against L-T4 side effects. We describe the case of a 64-year-old cardiopathic patient with papillary thyroid carcinoma and autoimmune thyroiditis, whose cardiac condition worsened during TSH-suppressive therapy. TSH concentrations also fluctuated widely because of changing intestinal absorption due to coeliac disease.

Pregnancy in patients with thalassemia major: a cohort study and conclusions for an adequate care management approach.

An improvement in quality of life and survival occurred among thalassemia major (TM) patients: pregnancy in such patients has become a reality. Safe pregnancy and delivery require efforts to ensure the best outcomes. Between 2007 and 2016, 30 TM patients had 37 pregnancies.

Unusual presentation of large B cell lymphoma: a case report and review of literature.

Diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the largest subtype of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHLs) and is characterized by relatively frequent extranodal presentation. In these cases, the most common extranodal localizations are stomach, CNS, bone, testis and liver. The behaviour of staphylococcal growth, thermonuclease and enterotoxin production in foods responsible of different food poisoning outbreaks is described. The significance of thermonuclease estimation, as a simple laboratory test for evaluating the hygienic status of foods in different steps of their commercial life, is discussed.

A tentative procedure, with solid plated selective-differential media, for enumeration of total and fecal coliforms and enterococci in surface and waste waters is described. Results obtained with such techniques appear to be satisfactory in comparison with the traditional official procedure (MPN) for fecal coliforms (E. coli).

[Simple and rapid method for direct coliform analysis in seawater].

A simple and rapid test for the fecal coliform analysis in seawaters by means of the direct seeding on selective-differential m-FC agar medium is described. The data set fourth show a good yield for the test insofar as test sensitivity, specificity and reliability are concerned. Consequently, its use is proposed along with, or at variance with, the traditional techniques MPN and FM which are not always of practical and easy carrying out, under particular operative conditions (need to customarily analyse a high number of samples).
