Carcinoma in situ of the breast is a well-known entity in humans. In veterinary medicine, particularly in canine and feline mammary literature, there is no agreement whether the term in situ should be used to indicate a specific carcinoma histotype or the noninvasive status of a carcinoma of any histotype. Moreover, in the most recent histologic classification of mammary tumors published by the Davis-Thompson Foundation, it is suggested to abandon the term carcinoma in situ given the lack of standardized criteria defining this entity, replacing it with epitheliosis or ductal/lobular hyperplasia with severe atypia.

Sarcopenia is defined as the age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass, quality, and strength. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying sarcopenia are still not completely understood. We report a case of an 18-year-old woman who developed a delayed pseudoaneurysm of the right anterior tibial artery (ATA), 14 days after a knife accidental trauma. The patient was admitted to our emergency department for acute onset of pain in the right limb after a domestic trauma. Unlabelled: The knowledge of both normal and abnormal anatomy of the veins of the neck may be important for surgeons performing neck surgery, to avoid inadvertent injury to vascular structures. In a 75-year-old man candidated to carotid endarterectomy preoperative CT-scan showed a rare anomaly of the venous drainage in the area of the anterior jugular vein (AJV), that usually begins in the suprahyoid region via the confluence of several superficial veins, to open into the ipsilateral external jugular vein. A large left sided venous trunk, originating from an anomalous proximal confluence with the internal jugular vein, descended in the AJV anatomical position, to cross over the sternum draining into the right subclavian vein.

Recessive mlo alleles of the barley Mlo gene confer resistance to almost all known isolates of the powdery mildew fungal pathogen targeting barley (Hordeum vulgare). To characterize haplotypes present in the Mlo chromosomal region of cultivated Mlo and mlo barley genotypes, we conducted a polymorphism search in 3 predicted low-copy sequence regions adjacent to the Mlo gene by examining a sample of 4 Mlo and 3 mlo cultivars. Eight single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 1 insertion-deletion (indel) were detected, and easy to use PCR-based markers were developed for typing the SNPs.

Chitosan ascorbate, obtained by mixing chitosan with ascorbic acid and sodium ascorbate, was produced in a gel form suitable for the treatment of periodontitis according to current dental surgery. While chitosan ascorbate underwent degradation in vitro, especially in the presence of atmospheric oxygen and at pH 6.0, the protection from oxygen offered by the surgical cements and the physiological pH value permitted chitosan ascorbate to play an important biological role in vivo, where it kept a honeycomb structure, as indicated by SEM on biopsies taken on 10 patients.

The apparent maximal transport capacity (Tm) of the liver for bilirubin was studied in rats after oral treatment for two weeks with the two flavonoids (+)-cyanidanol-3 and palmitoyl-catechin in order to investigate a possible mechanism of action on jaundice described in humans. (+)-Cyanidanol-3 produces no changes in bilirubin-Tm, and the analysis of bilirubin and its conjugates in the different compartments reveals a decreased amount of the whole bilirubin taken up by the liver. Palmitoyl-catechin, a more lipophilic derivative of catechin, produces a slight increase in bilirubin-Tm.
