Introduction: This study presents the authors' experience over 14 years of performing restorative procto-colectomy with ileal pouch anal anastomosis (IPAA). The aim was to study the long-term quality of life outcomes and analyse the predictors of pouch function as well as physical and mental wellbeing.
Methods: This is a single-centre retrospective study conducted in a specialised colorectal surgery unit in the UK.
Emissions reductions may not meet expectations, and groundwater use will likely increase.

The aim of this study was to analyse the demographics, clinicopathological features and prognosis of young CRC at a population-based level in England.
Method: This is a retrospective review of all CRC patients using data from Public Health England collated from regional cancer registries in England between 2010 and 2014.
Purpose: The surgical treatment of advanced low rectal cancer remains controversial. Extended lymphadenectomy (EL) is the preferred option in the East, especially in Japan, while neoadjuvant radiotherapy is the treatment of choice in the West. This review was undertaken to review available evidence supporting each of the therapies.

There is an urgent need to identify new therapeutic targets and also understand the mechanism of PDAC progression that leads to aggressiveness of the disease. To find therapeutic targets, we analyzed data related to PDAC transcriptome sequencing and found overexpression of the de novo purine metabolic enzyme phosphoribosylaminoimidazole succinocarboxamide synthetase (PAICS).

Metastatic urothelial carcinoma of the bladder is generally incurable by current chemotherapy and leads to early mortality. Recent studies have identified molecular subtypes of MIBCs with different sensitivities to frontline therapy, suggesting tumor heterogeneity.

We investigated the functional role of phosphoribosylaminoimidazole carboxylase, phosphoribosylaminoimidazole succinocarboxamide synthetase (PAICS), a de novo purine biosynthetic enzyme involved in DNA synthesis, in CRC progression and metastasis by using cell and animal models. Its clinical utility was assessed in human CRC samples.

This analysis is motivated by the Sri Lankan government's largest policy response to this epidemic - to encourage communities to switch from untreated well water to publicly provided alternatives. We use recall methods to elicit information on the drinking water source and treatment choices of households over an 18-year period from 2000-2017.

A carefully designed household survey provides information on whether these households self-reported having a member in the decade prior to 2018, who had been clinically diagnosed with CKD. Households were classified according to whether or not they had used groundwater (from household wells, agro-wells or springs) as their primary source for drinking or cooking for at least five years between 1999 and 2018.

Methods: Data were collected retrospectively in 101 patients who underwent TOF repair over a 10-year period between January 2005 and September 2015. The primary endpoint was reintervention on the RVOT, defined as a surgical procedure or cardiac catheterization-based RVOT reintervention.
In aggressive prostate cancers, the oncoprotein STMN1 (also known as stathmin 1 and oncoprotein 18) is often overexpressed. STMN1 is involved in various cellular processes, including cell proliferation, motility, and tumor metastasis. Here, it was found that the expression of STMN1 RNA and protein is elevated in metastatic prostate cancers.

The large sample numbers in TCGA offer an excellent opportunity to address questions associated with tumo heterogeneity. Exploration of the data by cancer researchers and clinicians is imperative to unearth novel therapeutic/diagnostic biomarkers.

Background: Anomalous aortic origin of a coronary artery (AAOCA) is a known cause of sudden death. Our hypothesis was that longer intramural length and smaller ostial diameter correlate with preoperative symptoms. If true, this would assist in the decision for surgical indications.

Most research on managing onsite sanitation so far either simulates the costs of, or the welfare effects from, managing sludge in situ in pit latrines. Thus, designing management strategies for onsite rural sanitation is challenging, because the actual costs of transporting sludge for treatment, and sources for financing these transport costs, are not well understood.

Methods: A centrifugal VAD, designed to flow at 1.5 to 8 L/min, was used as a bridge to transplantation in pediatric patients.
We conducted a randomized controlled trial in rural Bangladesh to examine how household drinking-water choices were affected by two different messages about risk from naturally occurring groundwater arsenic. Households in both randomized treatment arms were informed about the arsenic level in their well and whether that level was above or below the Bangladesh standard for arsenic. Households in one group of villages were encouraged to seek water from wells below the national standard.

The severity of these lesions increases as the immune competency decreases, leading to visual impairment or blindness.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and the types of HIV associated ocular conditions and their effect on the vision in patients with HIV/AIDS.
Background: The circadian variation that affects atherosclerosis has not been studied in the surgical patient. The circadian variation in mortality dependent on the time of surgery was examined in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.
Methods: A 4-year retrospective review of all CABG patients (n = 3140) from 1999 to 2002 was undertaken.
Background: Recent data has shown that the use of warmed, humidified carbon dioxide (CO2) insufflation during laparoscopic surgery may be associated with better outcomes.
Methods: We performed a randomized, doubleblind, prospective controlled clinical trial of 30 patients undergoing laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGBP). Patients were randomized into 2 groups.
