Introduction: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, inflammatory, recurrent disease, usually presenting after puberty with inflammatory lesions that mainly affect the apocrine gland-bearing areas of the body, most commonly the axillary, inguinal and anogenital regions. The treatment of HS is associated with certain challenges due to intrinsic resistance to various treatments and the presence of comorbidities and complications. The antibiotic dapsone is an established treatment for HS, but the current evidence base is limited.

Hydroxyurea, an antitumor systemic agent (a ribonucleoside diphosphate reductase inhibitor) used in the treatment of refractory psoriasis as well as in the variety of neoplastic disorders is known to cause brownish pigmentation of the nails but hydroxyurea induced blue lunula is very rare. It is being reported in a 45-year-old man with chronic recalcitrant plaque psoriasis on oral hydroxyurea 500 mg twice daily.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe autosomal recessive disorder lipoid proteinosis results from mutations in extracellular matrix protein 1 (ECM1), a glycoprotein expressed in several tissues (including skin) and composed of two alternatively spliced isoforms, ECM1a and ECM1b, the latter lacking exon 7 of this 10-exon gene (ECM1). To date, mutations that either affect ECM1a alone or perturb both ECM1 transcripts have been demonstrated in six cases. However, lipoid proteinosis is clinically heterogeneous with affected individuals displaying differing degrees of skin scarring and infiltration, variable signs of hoarseness and respiratory distress, and in some cases neurological abnormalities such as temporal lobe epilepsy.
