Background: This study aimed to evaluate the current status of dental sleep medicine education across dental schools in Australia and New Zealand and gain further insights into the educational background of dentists who have sat the Australasian Sleep Association Fellow of Dental Sleep Medicine examination in 2023.

Methods: Online surveys were carried out, and descriptive statistics were used to analyse data.

Results: All dental schools responded to the survey.

This study evaluated the accuracy of diagnosing oral and maxillofacial diseases using telehealth. We recruited 100 patients from the Oral Health Centre of Western Australia. They were either new patients or existing patients with a condition not previously diagnosed.

Pulsed-field ablation of atrial fibrillation with a pentaspline catheter across National Health Service England centres.

Introduction: Pulsed-field ablation (PFA) is a novel modality for pulmonary vein isolation in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). We describe the initial uptake and experience of PFA using a pentaspline catheter across selected National Health Service England (NHSE) centres.

Methods: Data collected by NHSE Specialised Services Development Programme regarding AF ablation procedures using a single-shot, pentaspline, multielectrode PFA catheter (FARAWAVE, Boston Scientific) between June 2022 and August 2024 were aggregated and analysed to examine procedural metrics, acute efficacy and safety outcomes over 3-month follow-up.

Introduction: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the fourth most common malignancy in the UK and represents a high-volume diagnostic and clinical burden on the National Health Service (NHS). To maximise the use of limited diagnostic resources and increase efficiency, the colorectal services at University Hospitals North Midlands Trust (UHNM) developed the triage-to-test (TTT) service with risk stratification for diagnostic testing in patients with suspected colorectal cancer using faecal immunochemical testing (FIT) result. Our retrospective cohort study looked at the pick-up rate of colorectal cancer (CRC) and non-colorectal cancer (non-CRC) in FIT-negative patients.

Investigating the role of auditory cues in modulating motor timing: insights from EEG and deep learning.

Research on action-based timing has shed light on the temporal dynamics of sensorimotor coordination. This study investigates the neural mechanisms underlying action-based timing, particularly during finger-tapping tasks involving synchronized and syncopated patterns. It is within this highly multidisciplinary context that we have seen an increasing role for dentists in the recognition, diagnosis and management of select sleep disturbances and disorders. Over the last couple of decades, this growing role for dentists has seen the informal emergence of a new interdisciplinary field of Dental Sleep Medicine-a field that bridges medicine and dentistry as it pertains to the diagnosis and management of sleep disorders.

Effects of auditory noise intensity and color on the dynamics of upright stance.

Previous work assessing the effect of additive noise on the postural control system has found a positive effect of additive white noise on postural dynamics. This study covers two separate experiments that were run sequentially to better understand how the structure of the additive noise signal affects postural dynamics, while also furthering our knowledge of how the intensity of auditory stimulation of noise may elicit this phenomenon. Across the two experiments, we introduced three auditory noise stimulations of varying structure (white, pink, and brown noise).

Cryoballoon pulmonary vein isolation as first-line treatment of typical atrial flutter: long-term outcomes of the CRAFT trial.

Background: CRAFT was an international, multicentre, randomised controlled trial across 11 sites in the United UK and Switzerland. Given the evidence that pulmonary vein triggers may be responsible for atrial flutter (AFL) as well as atrial fibrillation (AF), we hypothesised that cryoballoon pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) would provide greater symptomatic arrhythmia reduction than cavotricuspid isthmus (CTI) ablation, whilst also reducing the subsequent burden of AF. This study presents the results of systematic reviews on adjunctive tools in screening and diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) and to determine if the current literature supports their use as either an adjunctive tool or replacement of gold standard techniques. Systemic reviews and meta-analysis that evaluated adjunctive tools including chemiluminescence, tissue autofluorescence, tissue fluorescence spectroscopy, vital staining and cytology techniques were systematically examined using AMSTAR II. Twenty-seven systematic reviews were included.

Survey of rectal cancer MRI technique and reporting tumour descriptors in the UK: a multi-centre British Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (BSGAR) audit.

Aim: To evaluate variation in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique and reporting of rectal cancer staging examinations across the UK.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective, multi-centre audit was undertaken of imaging protocols and information documented within consecutive MRI rectal cancer reports between March 2020 and August 2021, which were compared against American and European guidelines. Inclusion criteria included histologically proven rectal adenocarcinoma and baseline staging MRI rectum only.

Traditionally, pitch variation in a sound stream has been integral to music identity. We attempt to expand music's definition, by demonstrating that the neural code for musicality is independent of pitch encoding. That is, pitchless sound streams can still induce music-like perception and a neurophysiological hierarchy similar to pitched melodies.

CTC service heterogeneity and design of a workforce calculator.

Aim: To determine the level of heterogeneity in delivery of computed tomography (CT) colonography services and develop a workforce calculator that accommodates the variation identified.

Materials And Methods: A national survey, based on the "WHO workforce indicators of staffing need", established activity standards for essential tasks in delivery of the service. From these data a workforce calculator was designed to guide the required staffing and equipment resource by service size.

Multiple levels of contextual influence on action-based timing behavior and cortical activation.

Procedures used to elicit both behavioral and neurophysiological data to address a particular cognitive question can impact the nature of the data collected. We used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to assess performance of a modified finger tapping task in which participants performed synchronized or syncopated tapping relative to a metronomic tone. Both versions of the tapping task included a pacing phase (tapping with the tone) followed by a continuation phase (tapping without the tone).

Feasibility study of percutaneous thoracic duct embolization with lower-limb intermittent pneumatic compression devices.

Purpose: To demonstrate intranodal thoracic duct embolization (TDE) for treating chyle leaks following thoracic surgery and the feasibility of applying lower-limb intermittent pneumatic compression devices during TDE.

Methods: Between December 2017 and October 2020, 12 consecutive TDEs for post-operative chyle leaks were performed in 11 patients using intranodal lymphangiogram (IL) with an intermittent pneumatic compressive device applied to the lower limb. The procedure's duration, technical/clinical success, and complications were retrospectively evaluated.

Auditory and somatosensory white noise can stabilize standing balance. However, the differential effects of auditory and tactile noise stimulation on balance are unknown. Prior work on unimodal noise stimulation showed gains in balance with white noise through the auditory and tactile modalities separately.

The effect of elastic and viscous force fields on bimanual coordination.

Bimanual in-phase and anti-phase coordination modes represent two basic movement patterns with distinct characteristics-homologous muscle contraction and non-homologous muscle contraction, respectively. A method to understand the contribution of each limb to the overall coordination pattern involves detuning (Δω) the natural eigenfrequency of each limb. In the present experiment, we experimentally broke the symmetry between the two upper limbs by adding elastic and viscous force fields using a Kinarm robot exoskeleton.
