Birth asphyxia is a severe condition that includes a number of potential pathways of occurrence both and during childbirth. The present study aimed to identify and describe specific macroscopic and microscopic placental injuries in birth asphyxia to serve as an effective tool to stratify the potential further evolution of a newborn, as hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy can be responsible for neonatal death or severe neurological sequelae further, compromising the quality of life of the affected individual. For this purpose, an observational prospective study was conducted over a period of 3 years.

Background: Childhood obesity is one of the major challenges of public health policies. The problem of fatty liver in childhood, known as MAFLD (metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease), is of particular interest as the gold standard diagnosis technique is invasive (liver biopsy). Hence, efforts are made to discover more specific biomarkers for the MAFLD signature.

Article Synopsis
  • Large intron inversions are a major genetic cause of severe hemophilia A, accounting for nearly 50% of cases worldwide, particularly in Romanian patients.
  • In a study of 156 Romanian patients, intron 22 inversions were found in 41.7%, while intron 1 inversions were found in 3.2%, leading to a total of 44.9% with large intron inversions as the genetic defect.
  • The research also indicates that patients with intron 1 inversion have a higher risk of developing inhibitors compared to those without any detected inversions.

BACKGROUND : Optimal training strategies in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) remain controversial despite the shift toward competence-based training models, with limited data available on patient safety during training. We aimed to assess whether pre-procedural clinical predictors could identify patients at low risk of developing procedure-related adverse-events (AEs) in a training environment. METHODS : We performed a prospective, multicenter, cohort study in five training centers.

Introduction: Systemic sclerosis (Ssc) is a multiorgan debilitating autoimmune disease that associates the triad: vascular involvement, tissue fibrosis and profound immune response alterations. Numerous previous studies focused on identification of candidate proteomic Ssc biomarkers using mass-spectrometry techniques and a large number of candidate Ssc biomarkers emerged. These biomarkers must firstly be confirmed in independent patient groups.

The emerging Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic caused by Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a serious public health issue due to its rapid spreading, high mortality rate and lack of specific treatment. Given its unpredictable clinical course, risk assessment, and stratification for severity of COVID-19 are required. Apart from serving as admission criteria, prognostic factors might guide future therapeutic strategies.

Introduction: Peripheral neurologic manifestations may be associated with most of the collagen vascular diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), yet most of the times it is not clear what therapy should be prescribed. EULAR recommendations for the management of systemic lupus erythematosus with neuropsychiatric manifestations suggest the use of glucocorticoids and immunosuppressive agents for the treatment of SLE associated peripheral neuropathy (PN) (strength of statement A, category of evidence 1), however these recommendations are based on studies that did not focus specifically on PN but rather on neuropsychiatric manifestations of SLE out of which only one was a randomized controlled clinical trial that included 7 patients with peripheral neuropathy. The objective of this systematic review is to determine whether the pathogenic treatments (corticosteroids, immunosuppressive agents, intravenous immunoglobulins, plasmapheresis) are effective for SLE associated PN.
