: The transition from the pediatric to the adult healthcare system is a challenging process involving adolescents, parents, and pediatric and adult specialists. For a successful approach for an organized transition program, we must assess the level of training of adolescents facing transition. : We applied a clinic-based questionnaire measuring perceived self-management skills, adherence to health-related tasks, medication knowledge, and social adjustment to pediatric patients with chronic digestive diseases from North-East Romanian medical units, including a tertiary center and private practice offices.

Synthesis and Characterization of Copper(II) and Nickel(II) Complexes with 3-(Morpholin-4-yl)propane-2,3-dione 4-Allylthiosemicarbazone Exploring the Antibacterial, Antifungal and Antiradical Properties.

The eleven new copper(II) and nickel(II) coordination compounds [Cu(L)Br] (), [Cu(L)Cl] (), [Cu(L)NO] (), [Ni(L)Cl] (), [Ni(HL)](NO) (), and [Cu(A)(L)]NO, where A is 1,10-phenanthroline (), 2,2'-bipyridine (), 3,4-dimethylpyridine (), 3-methylpyridine (), pyridine () and imidazole () were synthesized with 3-(morpholin-4-yl)propane-2,3-dione 4-allylthiosemicarbazone (). The new thiosemicarbazone was characterized by NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. All the coordination compounds were characterized by elemental analysis and FTIR spectroscopy.

Post-Pandemic Burden of COVID-19-Related Restrictions in the Management of Digestive Tract Cancers: A Single Center Study.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection has required a complete change in the management of patients with gastrointestinal disease who needed to undergo endoscopic procedures. In the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, due to restrictions for elective endoscopic procedures, a large number of cancer patients were prevented from early diagnosis of several digestive cancers, which has led to a serious burden in the health system that now needs to be dealt with. We designed a prospective study that included patients in whom access to elective endoscopic examinations during the COVID-19 pandemic had been delayed.

The Association of Telangiectasias with Other Peripheral Vascular Lesions of Systemic Sclerosis.

Purpose: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a relatively rare collagenosis manifested as microvasculopathy, excessive cutaneous and visceral fibrosis in a background of autoimmune alteration. Autoimmune vasculopathy in SSc occurs early and begins with endothelial cell activation followed by blood vessel intimal proliferation in a context of defective angiogenesis. The alteration of peripheral micro and macrocirculation in SSc is evident through vascular lesions, such as Raynaud's phenomenon, telangiectasias, acrocyanosis, digital ulcers, gangrene, peripheral pulse deficiency.

Fast, reliable methods for characterizing the micelle-to-gel transition in emerging Pluronic F127/polysaccharide materials are essential for tailoring their applications as in situ gelling delivery systems. This study describes a simple fluorimetric method based on the response to gelation of the molecular probe thioflavin T (ThT). The techniques employed are (second derivative) steady-state and synchronous fluorescence.

Comparative Analysis of Antibiotic Resistance in Acute Cholangitis Patients with Stent Placement and Sphincterotomy Interventions.

In response to rising concerns over multidrug resistance patterns in acute cholangitis patients, this retrospective study was conducted at the Emergency County Hospital Timisoara, Romania, encompassing patients treated between August 2020 and August 2023. The study aimed to investigate the influence of prior interventions, specifically sphincterotomy (with or without stent placement), on the current clinical and microbiological profiles of acute cholangitis patients. By differentiating between patients with a history of sphincterotomy and the endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)-naïve, we assessed the resistance of bacterial strains to antibiotics by the Tokyo Guidelines 2018, using bile cultures from 488 patients.

Advances in Noninvasive Biomarkers for Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) currently represents one of the most common liver diseases worldwide. Early diagnosis and disease staging is crucial, since it is mainly asymptomatic, but can progress to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) or cirrhosis or even lead to the development of hepatocellular carcinoma. Over time, efforts have been put into developing noninvasive diagnostic and staging methods in order to replace the use of a liver biopsy.

Effect of Bioactive Compounds from Pumpkin Powder on the Quality and Textural Properties of Shortbread Cookies.

The problem of food with functional ingredients, characterized by low energy intake and a variety of phytonutrients with biological activity, is one of the concerns of the population. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of pumpkin powder and its bioactive components on the quality, color and textural properties of shortbread cookies. In the drying process of pumpkin powder () at 60 ± 2 °C, the physicochemical parameters did not change significantly in relation to fresh pulp.

IMRT as an Alternative Technique for Intracavitary Brachytherapy in Patients with Carcinoma of the Cervix: A Feasibility Study Using Unified Dosimetric Index.

Objective: Intracavitary brachytherapy (ICBT) plays an important role in the management of carcinoma of the cervix. This study attempts to find the feasibility of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) as a boost for patients who are not suitable for ICBT in order to improve their disease-free and overall survival.

Methods: Twenty patients with carcinoma of the cervix were included in this study.

New Hydrogels Nanocomposites Based on Chitosan, 2-Formylphenylboronic Acid, and ZnO Nanoparticles as Promising Disinfectants for Duodenoscopes Reprocessing.

New hydrogels nanocomposites, based on iminoboronate hydrogels and ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs), were obtained and characterised in order to develop a new class of disinfectants able to fight the nosocomial infections produced by duodenoscopes investigation procedures. The formation of the imine linkages between chitosan and the aldehyde was demonstrated using NMR and FTIR spectroscopy, while the supramolecular architecture of the developed systems was evaluated via wide-angle X-ray diffraction and polarised optical microscopy. The morphological characterisation of the systems via scanning electron microscopy revealed the highly porous structure of the materials, in which no ZnO agglomeration could be observed, indicating the very fine and homogenous encapsulation of the nanoparticles into the hydrogels.

Severe Intentional Corrosive (Nitric Acid) Acute Poisoning: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Despite being one of the most debilitating conditions encountered in the field of toxicology, there is a lack of neutralization measures for the toxins involved in acute corrosive poisoning, and this promotes progressive contact injury of deep tissues after poisoning has occurred. Multiple controversies still surround management strategies during the acute phase of poisoning and the long-term follow-up of the patient. Here, we report a severe case of intentional poisoning with nitric acid complicated by extensive injury of the upper digestive tract, multiple stricture formation, and complete dysphagia.

A new series of bioactive MoOS-based thiosemicarbazone complexes: Solution and DFT studies, and antifungal and antioxidant activities.

This paper deals with the synthesis, characterization, and studies of biological properties of a series of 5 coordination compounds based on binuclear core [MoOS] with thiosemicarbazones ligands bearing different substituents on the R position of the ligand. The complexes are first studied using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy to determine their structures in solution in relation to single-crystal X-Ray diffraction data. In a second part, the antifungal and antioxidative activities are explored and the high potential of these coordination compounds compared to the uncoordinated ligands is demonstrated for these properties.

Physico-Chemical Changes Induced by Gamma Irradiation on Some Structural Protein Extracts.

In this study, the effect of gamma irradiation (10 kGy) on proteins extracted from animal hide, scales, and wool was evidenced by calorimetric (μDSC) and spectroscopic (IR, circular dichroism, and EPR) methods. Keratin was obtained from sheep wool, collagen and bovine gelatin from bovine hide, and fish gelatin from fish scales. The μDSC experiments evidenced that gamma irradiation influences the thermal stability of these proteins differently.
