Differential representations of memory T cell subsets are characteristic of polarized immunity in leprosy and atopic diseases.

We identified functionally polarized subsets of CD4 memory T cells on the basis of the expression of CD11a, CD45RA and CD62L. Within the several phenotypically distinct subsets of CD4 memory cells are two that, upon stimulation, produce primarily IL-4 (MT(2), CD45RA(-)CD62L(+)CD11a(dim)) or primarily IFN-gamma (MT(1), CD45RA(-)CD62L(-)CD11a(bright)). In addition, four other phenotypically distinct subsets of CD4 cells have unique cytokine profiles.

Optimization of culture conditions for the preservation of monkey pancreatic islets in culture.

Culturing of islets is essential for various purposes before transplantation. It is necessary to establish optimal culture conditions for each animal species for their preservation in culture. In this study, attempts were made to preserve the Indian bonnet monkey islets in culture.

Evaluation of uroprotective efficacy of amifostine against cyclophosphamide induced hemorrhagic cystitis.

The role of amifostine in the prevention of cyclophosphamide-induced hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) was evaluated in the rat model. Urinary bladders from control rats that received no drugs (group I) were compared with those from rats receiving cyclophosphamide alone at a dose of 150 mg/kg (group II), and two other groups receiving amifostine at 100 mg/kg (group III) and 200 mg/kg (group IV), 15 min prior to cyclophosphamide. Bladders were assessed macroscopically and histologically at 24 h and after 7 days.

Immunogenetic analysis of Takayasu arteritis in Indian patients.

The distribution of HLA-A, B, C and DR antigens was determined in a cohort of 104 unrelated Indian patients with Takayasu arteritis (TA) belonging to the North Indian states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. The data was compared with healthy controls belonging to the same ethnic group. In addition, polymorphism in the MHC class I chain related A (MIC A) gene was studied in a group of 25 TA patients and 40 healthy controls.

Intravenous glucose tolerance test in Macaca radiata radiata.

A reliable method for performing sensitive intravenous glucose tolerance tests in monkeys has been standardized. This helps in assessment of beta cell function. A normal curve for glucose disposal is constructed.

Xenographic transplantation of monkey pancreatic islets into rats.

Islets of Langerhans were isolated from the monkey pancreatic by collagenase digestion method. Freshly isolated monkey pancreatic islets were transplanted under the renal capsule of normal rats. Treated group of rats received Cyclosporine A injections and the control group of rats did not receive any drug.

Assessment of iodine deficiency disorders using the 30 cluster approach in the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

Objective: Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) are a major public health problem in India. The National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi is a known iodine deficiency endemic area. The Delhi Government banned the sale of non-iodised salt since 1989.
