Background: The da Vinci Surgical Robotic System is being increasingly used to perform complex urological operations by minimally invasive techniques. Prior abdominal surgery associated with intra-abdominal adhesions may complicate robotic surgery.
Methods: We used a cohort of consecutive 49 patients undergoing a variety of robotic urological procedures at our institution to study the impact of prior abdominal operations on early perioperative complications.
Purpose: Radical nephrectomy can be performed using open or laparoscopic (with or without hand assistance) methods, and most recently using the da Vinci Surgical Robotic System. We evaluated the perioperative outcomes using a contemporary cohort of patients undergoing radical nephrectomy by one of the above 4 methods performed by the same surgeon.
Materials And Methods: The relevant clinical information on 57 consecutive patients undergoing radical nephrectomy from September 2000 until July 2004 by a single surgeon was entered in a Microsoft Access Database and queried.
We have previously described that tissue transglutaminase (tTG) is a high level phenotypic biomarker in prostate cancer, which is down regulated in prostate cancer and surrounding premalignant field compared to benign prostate glands. To understand the function of tTG in prostate cancer, we sought to identify proteins that interact with the transglutaminase moiety of tTG using a human prostate cancer complementary deoxyribonucleic acid library in a Yeast 2-Hybrid system. The Yeast 2-Hybrid experiments identified a strong and novel interaction between the transglutaminase moiety and protein kinase A anchor protein 13 (AKAP13), which was quantified by beta-galactosidase assay, confirmed in vitro by immunoprecipitation experiments using PC3 prostate cancer cell lysates, and in vivo colocalization was confirmed by immunofluorescence studies in PC3 cells.

We studied the expression of the major members of the family, including E-cadherin and beta-catenin in prostate cancer (PC), and correlated with Gleason grade and pathologic stage. We explored the role of N-cadherin as a biomarker in PC by correlating the expression with clinical parameters.
Methods: Two pathologists blinded to patients' history independently reviewed and scored the intensity and extent of staining of N-cadherin expression in 44 randomly selected radical prostatectomy specimens.
Objectives: To report our initial experience and the utility of the da Vinci surgical robotic system (DSRS) for performing robotic radical nephrectomy (RRN). The DSRS has been increasingly evaluated to determine its feasibility for assisting surgeons in major urologic procedures.
Methods: The perioperative outcomes of the first five RRNs performed at our institution were analyzed to establish the safety and utility of the DSRS in performing RRN.
The da Vinci Surgical Robotic System has recently been added to the armamentarium of minimally invasive surgeon and has been shown to be useful to urologists in performing complex operations. We report the first case of detrusor myotomy performed using the da Vinci, describe the novel technique, and review the indications and published outcomes of detrusor myotomy to identify potential applications of this novel technique in patients with neurogenic bladder.

The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) and The Vaccine Fund are two major global initiatives adopted with the objectives of improving access to immunization services particularly in the underdeveloped and developing countries and introduction of new but under-used vaccines in the developing countries in particular where these diseases are highly prevalent. The ileal conduit urinary diversion was done totally intracorporeally using conventional laparoscopic techniques, and the DSRS was used to assist in the Bricker-type ureteroileal anastomosis.

We demonstrate a dynamical origin for the dimension-five seesaw operator in dimensional deconstruction models. Light neutrino masses arise from the seesaw scale which corresponds to the inverse lattice spacing. It is shown that the deconstructing limit naturally prefers maximal leptonic mixing.

Prostate cancer (PC) patients die from progression to androgen independence (AI) and chemoresistance (CR). Protein kinase Cmu (PKCmu) a novel member of the PKC family of signal transduction proteins is downregulated in AI PC. Studying PKCmu interactors in the yeast two-hybrid system identified metallothionein 2A (MT 2A) as an interactor of PKCmu kinase domain (KD) in PC, which was quantified by beta-gal assay, confirmed in PC cells by immunoprecipitation, and PKCmu-MT 2A co-localization in vivo by immunofluorescence studies.

Progression to androgen independence (AI) is the main cause of death in prostate cancer. Our prior differential gene expression studies by microarray analysis in progressive prostate cancer cell line model identified dysregulation of protein kinase C mu (PKCmu) expression in prostate cancer. In this study, quantitative ribonuclease protection assay and immunoblot analysis demonstrate down regulation of PKCmu at transcription and translational level, respectively, in AI C4-2 cells compared to its parental androgen dependent (AD) LNCaP prostate cancer cells.

Injectable gel formulations of deslorelin and GnRH were prepared using Pluronic F127 (25%, w/w), a block copolymer. PF127 gels sustained the in vitro release of deslorelin as well as GnRH at similar rates and reduced drug degradation in muscle tissue when compared to the solution formulations.

Materials And Methods: Data on a cohort of 215 patients who underwent transrectal ultrasound guided prostate biopsies at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, New York were included in this study. Radio frequency data necessary for 2 and 3-dimensional (D) computer reconstruction of the prostate were digitally recorded at transrectal ultrasound and prostate biopsy.
The granule exocytosis cytotoxicity pathway is the major molecular mechanism for cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) and natural killer (NK) cytotoxicity, but the question of how these cytotoxic lymphocytes avoid self-destruction after secreting perforin has remained unresolved. We show that CTL and NK cells die within a few hours if they are triggered to degranulate in the presence of nontoxic thiol cathepsin protease inhibitors. The potent activity of the impermeant, highly cathepsin B-specific membrane inhibitors CA074 and NS-196 strongly implicates extracellular cathepsin B.

We analyzed the renal cancer incidence from 1973 to 1998 in the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results program by historic staging of localized, regional or distant disease to evaluate possible stage migration due to increased abdominal imaging.
Materials And Methods: We used renal cancer data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results 9 registries, public use, August 2000 submission (National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Maryland), which represents approximately 14% of the United States population.
Background: We attempted to provide experimental evidence linking increased dietary calcium to progression of prostate cancer, as suggested by some epidemiological studies, using a heterotopic prostate cancer nude mice model.
Methods: Twenty heterotopic LNCaP prostate cancer tumor bearing nude mice were randomly assigned to one of the four groups: (I) high fat/low calcium diet, (II) high fat and high calcium diet, (III) high fat diet fortified with Vitamin D3, and (IV) high fat and high calcium diet fortified with Vitamin D3. In addition to weekly animal weights and tumor size measurements, the serum prostate specific antigen (PSA), 25-hydroxy Vitamin D3, calcium, phosphorus, total protein, albumin (to account for bound calcium) [1], and serum alkaline phosphatase (a measure of bone loss) [2] were determined at the termination of experiments.

Spectrum-analysis parameter values combined with other variables, such as serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) concentration, can be classified by neural networks to distinguish effectively between cancerous and noncancerous prostate tissues.
