Enterovirus-D68 (EV-D68) was first identified in 1962 in pediatric patients with acute respiratory conditions in California, USA (US). From the 1970s to 2005, EV-D68 was underestimated due to limited data and serotyping methods. In 2014, the United States experienced outbreaks of acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) in children EV-D68 positive.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assesses radon and thoron exhalation rates using a closed-loop technique with online radon monitors, particularly focusing on the balance of air volume in the sample and detector chambers.
  • An alternative model is proposed that treats the sample and detector chambers as separate entities, refining the mass balance equation to account for air flow rates affecting radon/thoron concentrations.
  • Results indicate that while lower flow rates don't affect long-lived radon buildup, experiments showed that increasing flow rates impacts the effective removal rate of radon, suggesting potential issues with thoron interference at lower flows.

The goal of mucogingival surgery or periodontal plastic surgery is to preserve gingiva, remove aberrant frenum or muscle attachments, increase vestibular depth, and correct the denuded root surface. Recession coverage is indeed a challenging technique, whereas covering the exposed roots is not only important for aesthetic reasons but also for preventing further issues such as tooth sensitivity, root decay, and loss of supporting bone. A coronally advanced flap (CAF) is one of the most common procedures done for recession coverage because of the concept that the coronal advancement of a flap without tension to cover the exposed root surface or CAF with autogenous grafts results in bulk and improves the thickness of the gingival tissue, increasing the stability and aesthetics of the result.

In the oral cavity, the frenum is an anatomical structure composed of mucosal folds that connect the lip and cheek to the alveolar mucosa, gingiva, and underlying periosteum. An abnormally positioned maxillary labial frenum can contribute to the formation of a diastema and gingival recession. Various techniques have been proposed for the correction of aberrant frenal attachments, including frenectomy and frenal repositioning procedures.

Flavivirus infection, especially dengue virus infection caused by DENV, is known to be a significant health concern globally owing to the high incidence and mortality rate. The expanding and increasing disease burden calls for the need to develop an effective treatment and prevent the event of fatal complications, including dengue hemorrhagic fever/dengue shock syndrome. The DENV-induced immune response has been described as paradoxical because it has a protective role in viral clearance but, at the same time, causes more severe infection through viral-specific immunity.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common viral infection primarily affecting children. It causes vesicles on the skin and inside the mouth. Although most cases get better on their own, severe cases can lead to complications such as brain stem encephalitis, meningoencephalitis, acute flaccid paralysis, and pulmonary edema.

To overcome the limits of traditional antibiotic medications, novel approaches are needed to combat the growing global epidemic of Multidrug-resistant (MDR) infections. As drug-resistant bacteria develop, the importance of innovative antimicrobial methods is underscored by antibiotic abuse and misuse. The global threat of MDR microorganisms is increasing, which calls for a coordinated global response.

The underlying threat of new Zika virus (ZIKV) outbreaks remains, as no vaccines or therapies have yet been developed. In vitro research has shown that glycolysis is a key factor to enable sustained ZIKV replication in neuroprogenitors. However, neither in vivo nor clinical investigation of glycolytic modulators as potential therapeutics for ZIKV-related fetal abnormalities has been conducted.

Dengue fever (DF) is an endemic infectious tropical disease and is rapidly becoming a global problem. Dengue fever is caused by one of the four dengue virus (DENV) serotypes and is spread by the female Aedes mosquito. Clinical manifestations of DF may range from asymptomatic to life-threatening severe illness with conditions of hemorrhagic fever and shock.

In this review, we examine recent progress using boron nitride (BN) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS) nanostructures for electronic, energy, biomedical, and environmental applications. The scope of coverage includes zero-, one-, and two-dimensional nanostructures such as BN nanosheets, BN nanotubes, BN quantum dots, MoS nanosheets, and MoS quantum dots. These materials have sizable bandgaps, differentiating them from other metallic nanostructures or small-bandgap materials.

The study addressed a significant gap in the profiling and understanding of the gut microbiota's influence on Malaysian Malay women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). This prospective cohort study aimed to explore the intricate relationship between gut microbiota, dietary choices, and lifestyle factors among Malay women, both with and without GDM. The research specifically focused on participants during the second (T0) and third (T1) trimesters of pregnancy in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

Every year, influenza virus infections cause significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. They pose a substantial burden of disease, in terms of not only health but also the economy. Owing to the ability of influenza viruses to continuously evolve, annual seasonal influenza vaccines are necessary as a prophylaxis.

The microbes in the gut are crucial for maintaining the body's immune system and overall gut health. However, it is not fully understood how an unstable gut environment can lead to more severe cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The gut microbiota also plays a role in the gut-brain axis and interacts with the central nervous system through metabolic and neuroendocrine pathways.

In the present study encapsulation of ultrasound assisted red cabbage extract was carried out using four different carrier agents such as maltodextrin, gum arbic, xanthan gum, and gellan gum. Among the four hydrocolloids investigated, maltodextrin was found to have the least destructive effect on anthocyanin content (14.87 mg C3G/g dw), TPC (54.

Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) is one of hundreds of non-polio enteroviruses that typically cause cold-like respiratory illness. The first EV-D68 outbreak in the United States in 2014 aroused widespread concern among the public and health authorities. The infection was found to be associated with increased surveillance of acute flaccid myelitis, a neurological condition that causes limb paralysis in conjunction with spinal cord inflammation.

Despite growing recognition of the need for increased diversity among students, trainees, and faculty in health care, the medical workforce still lacks adequate representation from groups historically underrepresented in medicine (URiM). The subspecialty field of pediatric pulmonology is no exception. Although there have been efforts to address issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in our own field, gaps persist.

Ovarian cancers are tumors that originate from the different cells of the ovary and account for almost 4% of all the cancers in women globally. More than 30 types of tumors have been identified based on the cellular origins. Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the most common and lethal type of ovarian cancer which can be further divided into high-grade serous, low-grade serous, endometrioid, clear cell, and mucinous carcinoma.

The interleukin (IL)-12 family consists of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines that are able to signal the activation of host antiviral immunity while preventing over-reactive immune reactions due to active virus replication and viral clearance. Amongst others, IL-12 and IL-23 are produced and released by innate immune cells such as monocytes and macrophages to signal the proliferation of T cells and release of effector cytokines, which subsequently activate host defence against virus infections. Interestingly, the dualities of IL-27 and -35 are evidently shown in the course of virus infections; they regulate the synthesis of cytokines and antiviral molecules, proliferation of T cells, and viral antigen presentation in order to maximize virus clearance by the host immune system.

Purpose Of Review: Although gut microbiota have been associated with the etiology of some diseases, the influence of foods on gut microbiota, especially among pregnant women, remains unclear. Hence, a systematic review was performed to investigate the association between diet and gut microbiota and their influence on metabolic health in pregnant women.

Recent Findings: We performed the systematic review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 protocol to investigate the association between diet and gut microbiota and their influence on metabolic role in pregnant women.
