Control values of intraocular pressure in different species: a review of literature.

It is generally accepted that intraocular pressure (IOP) depends on the rate of aqueous humor production, system outflow resistance, and episcleral venous pressure. Therefore, control IOP values are expected to be within the strict and predictable limits in specific animal species, and there should be no vast differences between species. However, in the literature the control IOP values significantly vary (from potentially "hypotensive" to "hypertensive") within the same species, and especially between species depending on the measurement technique, head position in relation to the rest of the body, circadian rhythm, age, and topical and systemic drugs (anesthetics) applied.

Obesity management is increasingly dependent on bariatric surgical interventions, as the combination of lifestyle modifications and pharmacotherapy could have a modest long-term effect. Surgery is recommended only for individuals whose body mass index (BMI) ≥ 40 kg/m and ≥ 35 kg/m in the presence of weight-related comorbidities.

The Interplay between Dietary Habits and Glycemic Control in Type 1 Diabetes: A Comprehensive Prospective FGM Study.

Type 1 diabetes has become prevalent among the adult population, who have increasingly gained access to sensing technology. This study delved into the impact of diet, nutritional status, and the use of a continuous glucose monitoring system (CGM) on glycemic regulation among adults diagnosed with T1D. Employing a prospective design, data were gathered from 151 participants aged 18-60 across multiple cycles.

Intravesical Gemcitabine and Docetaxel Therapy for BCG-Naïve Patients: A Promising Approach to Non-Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer.

Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) therapy for patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) faces limitations in efficacy and significant side effects, aggravated by a recent global shortage. In this prospective clinical study, we report the outcomes of sequential intravesical administration of gemcitabine and docetaxel (Gem/Doce) as a first-line treatment for BCG-naïve patients with high-risk NMIBC (HR NMIBC). From October 2019 until April 2022, we enrolled 52 patients and followed the treatment protocol set forth by the University of Iowa.

POSTPROSTATECTOMY CONTINENCE AFTER FUNCTIONAL MAGNETIC PELVIC STIMULATION.

Although radical prostatectomy is considered the gold standard for optimal treatment of localized prostate cancer, this radical surgery carries a significant risk of erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence which can be present as transient or permanent side effects in many patients. We have made significant advances in diagnostic and surgical approach to prostate cancer, using a number of new methods that are becoming increasingly available, resulting in better treatment outcomes. However, we still do not use all the possibilities for the prevention and treatment of these side effects, probably due to their insufficient research, or unclear effectiveness.

SACRAL NEUROMODULATION IN TREATING OVERACTIVE BLADDER PATIENTS - FIRST-TIME APPLICATION IN CROATIA.

Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) is a safe, efficacious, and minimally invasive advanced therapy that involves electrical stimulation to sacral nerve root to modulate neural pathway. Indications for SNM include symptoms of overactive bladder (OAB), urinary incontinence, urinary retention, urgency and frequency and, regarding bowel dysfunction, fecal incontinence . In Europe and Canada, indication is also established for chronic constipation.

Histiocytosis and adult-onset orbital xanthogranuloma in 2023: a review of the literature and mini case series.

Purpose: Within the large umbrella of histiocytosis are a few similar yet heterogenous entities involving the orbit and periocular tissues with or without systemic infiltration, termed adult onset xanthogranuloma or orbital xanthogranuloma. Due to rarity of these conditions, different classifications in use, diverse clinical presentations and still unknown etiology, the aim of this paper was to provide an up-to-date literature review of the actual understanding of histiocytosis and its subgroups involving the orbit and periocular area, diagnostic strategies and therapeutic modalities.

Methods: We present a review of literature and small case series comprising four patients diagnosed and treated in the period from 2001 until 2023 in our hospital.

Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Scoring in a Pediatric Population.

In recent years, the prevalence of laryngopharyngeal reflux has risen, especially among pediatric patients. The diagnosis of laryngopharyngeal reflux relies on patient history and clinical assessment using the Reflux Finding Score and Reflux Symptom Index as crucial diagnostic tools. Some studies have proposed a link between pepsin and laryngopharyngeal reflux, potentially triggering palatine tonsil hypertrophy.

Elderly rats fed with a high-fat high-sucrose diet developed sex-dependent metabolic syndrome regardless of long-term metformin and liraglutide treatment.

Aim/introduction: The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of early antidiabetic therapy in reversing metabolic changes caused by high-fat and high-sucrose diet (HFHSD) in both sexes.

Methods: Elderly Sprague-Dawley rats, 45 weeks old, were randomized into four groups: a control group fed on the standard diet (STD), one group fed the HFHSD, and two groups fed the HFHSD along with long-term treatment of either metformin (HFHSD+M) or liraglutide (HFHSD+L). Antidiabetic treatment started 5 weeks after the introduction of the diet and lasted 13 weeks until the animals were 64 weeks old.

Enteroenteric intussusception caused by a small bowel metastatic cutaneous melanoma.

Unlike in children, intussusception is very rare in adults and accounts for only 1% of ileus in that population. While intussusception in children is most often idiopathic, in adults the cause of intussusception in most cases is tumor and most often metastatic adenocarcinoma. It is an extremely rare phenomenon for intestinal melanoma metastasis to be the cause of intussusception and has been described in the literature so far only in a limited number of case reports.

Expression of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor-A (VEGF-A) in Adenocarcinoma and Squamous Cell Cervical Cancer and Its Impact on Disease Progression: Single Institution Experience.

: The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the difference in VEGF-A expression in adenocarcinoma and squamous cell cervical cancer and to show the influence of VEGF-A expression on clinical, pathological, and therapeutic prognostic factors on the outcome of treatment and the survival of patients. : The study included patients with cervical cancer who were treated in the period from 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2021 at the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics, University Hospital Centre, Osijek. The researchers conducted a retrospective analysis of data from patients' medical history, along with the pathohistological findings and oncologist findings.

Colorectal adenocarcinoma presenting with a pathological fracture due to a solitary bone metastasis to the tibia: a case report and literature review.

Introduction: Solitary bone metastasis of colorectal carcinoma (CRC) without other metastasis sites is extremely rare and can be found in less than 1% of patients with CRC.

Aim: In the present study, we report the first case of a solitary tibia metastasis and its pathologic fracture as the first presenting feature of a colorectal adenocarcinoma.

Material And Methods: A 78-year-old female patient presented to our emergency department due to atraumatic pretibial swelling.

PELVIC REHABILITATION FOR URINARY INCONTINENCE AFTER RADICAL PROSTATECTOMY.

Radical prostatectomy (RP) performed by open, laparoscopic, or robotic approach is considered the gold standard for localized prostate cancer (PCa). However, it carries the risk of postprostatectomy urinary incontinence (UI) and erectile dysfunction (ED) which significantly reduce patients' satisfaction with surgery and quality of life (QoL), therefore it is important to decrease the possibility or severity of these complications to a minimum. There are several preoperative prognostic factors such as urethral length and closing pressure obtained by magnetic resonance imaging and profilometry, as well as several variations in the surgical approach such as preservation of the neurovascular bundle (NVB) and puboprostatic ligaments, sparing or reconstruction of bladder neck, Retzius-sparing approach, and meticulous surgical dissection, used to predict or prevent unwanted side effects of RP.

Thyroid gland has a key role in maintaining the body homeostasis. Thyroxine is the main hormone secreted from the thyroid gland, its effect being predominantly achieved after the intracellular conversion of thyroxine to triiodothyronine, which exhibits a higher affinity for the receptor complex, thus modifying gene expression of the target cells. Amiodarone is one of the most commonly used antiarrhythmics in the treatment of a broad spectrum of arrhythmias, usually tachyarrhythmias.

Jejunal Lipoma Causing Intussusception in an Adult.

First described by Barbette in 1674, intestinal intussusception represents a telescoping of proximal bowel segment into the lumen of the adjacent aboral segment. Adult intussusception comprises only about 5% of all intussusceptions. We present a case of 28-year male patient who complained of colicky, intermittent epigastric pain for the last one month.

Urethral pressure profile before radical prostatectomy as a predictor of early postoperative continence.

Objective: Urinary incontinence (UI) is one of the most common complications of radical prostatectomy (RP). Impaired urethral sphincter function is generally considered to be the most important contributing factor for UI; however, the mechanism of onset and recovery of urinary continence has not been fully elucidated. The objective of this research was to evaluate preoperative functional urethral length (FUL) and maximum urethral closure pressure (MUCP) as early continence recovery predictors after open retropubic RP (ORRP).

Improvement of Quality of Life after Radical Prostatectomy.

Prostate cancer screening has increased the number of patients eligible for radical prostatectomy (RP), but this curable surgery also increases the risk of postprostatectomy erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence, and although these adverse effects may vary depending on their incidence, severity and duration they are present in most men who undergoing RP, exposing them to psychosocial problems, increasing health care costs and reducing labour productivity, therefor it is of great importance to reduce or even prevent them. Pelvic physical rehabilitation is a relatively simple, non-invasive, outpatient method that, if applied properly before and/or after RP, can significantly reduce adverse effects, increase patient quality of life and satisfaction with surgery, but also reduce health care costs and accelerate return to work. It is therefore important that our patients and physicians are aware of the benefits of a pelvic muscle training program.

New Methodology of Designation the Precise Aircraft Position Based on the RTK GPS Solution.

The paper presents the results of research on improving the accuracy of aircraft positioning using RTK-OTF (Real Time Kinematic-On The Fly) technique in air navigation. The paper shows a new solution of aircraft positioning for the application of the differential RTK-OTF technique in air navigation. In particular, a new mathematical model is presented which makes it possible to determine the resultant position of an aircraft based on the solution for the method of least squares in a stochastic process.

Extensive Abdominal Skin Necrosis Following Anterior Component Separation for a Large Ventral Hernia: A Case Report.

Hernia surgery is one of the most common operative procedures, performed in about 20 million cases per year all over the world, with ventral hernia accounting for about 30% of the cases. Although the introduction of the anterior component separation (ACS) method, popularized primarily by Oscar Ramirez, has greatly facilitated the closure of the largest abdominal wall defects, the 30-year experience in this technique has pointed to the risk of ischemic skin complications consequential to the major subcutaneous tissue dissection required. The aim of this case presentation of a patient who developed extensive necrosis of the abdominal wall skin following ACS procedure is to emphasize the importance of preserving rectus abdominis perforator blood vessels in order to preserve skin vitality.

Sexual Dysfunction in Patients with Epilepsy.

Background: Patients with epilepsy commonly report sexual dysfunction (SD) and reproductive difficulties. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between epilepsy, antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and SD, and its association with the quality of life and depressive symptoms.

Subjects And Methods: This was a prospective study carried out in a tertiary healthcare centre.

Hypertriglyceridemia-induced pancreatitis treated with continuous insulin infusion-Case series.

Objective: There are no definitive treatment guidelines for hypertriglyceridemia (HTG)-induced acute pancreatitis (AP). The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the efficacy of insulin in decreasing triglyceride (TG) levels in patients with HTG-induced AP.

Design: We included 17 cases of HTG-induced AP treated with continuous insulin aspart for 4 days.

Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms and Depression in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis.

Background: Both depression and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) may be present in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). The objective of this study was to give an insight on depression and LUTS in patients with MS in Croatia and to determine the possible association between LUTS and depression in patients with MS.

Subjects And Methods: This was a prospective cross-sectional study conducted in a tertiary healthcare center in Croatia.

Instantaneous Ambiguity Reinitialization and Fast Ambiguity Initialization for L1-L2 GPS Measurements.

This paper presents a cise and ast ethod of mbiguity einitialization/esolution (PREFMAR) for L1 and L2 in GPS measurements. The method determines NL1 and NL2 ambiguities based on the ambiguity functions: Ψ(NL1)NL1NL2 and Ψ(NL2)NL2NL1. These ambiguity functions have been described in detail in this work.

Network Code DGNSS Positioning for Faster L1-L5 GPS Ambiguity Initialization.

This paper presents DGNSS network code positioning using permanent geodetic networks, commonly used in GNSS measurements. Using several reference stations at the same time allows for the independent control of GNSS positioning and facilitates the more realistic estimation of accuracy. Test calculations were made on the basis of real GPS data, using one TRIMBLE mobile receiver and four nearest reference stations of the ASG-EUPOS geodetic system.
