Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. In the last few years, the role of inflammation and inflammatory modulatory medications is investigated for the optimal treatment of coronary artery disease. It can be hypothesized that since inflammation is also involved in carotid artery stenosis development and progression, the same class of medication could be useful.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates characteristics that affect successful revascularization in patients with lower extremity chronic total occlusions (CTOs) compared to those with non-CTO stenosis, revealing significant demographic and clinical differences.
  • - Among the 256 patients analyzed, those with CTOs showed a higher prevalence of risk factors such as myocardial infarction and end-stage renal disease, while aspirin use predicted better outcomes and a history of malignancy predicted worse outcomes for crossing CTOs.
  • - Findings suggest that successful endovascular revascularization is linked to specific baseline clinical variables and the overall health burden in CTO patients, highlighting the complexity of their condition.

Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) is a progressive pulmonary vascular disease which can lead to right heart failure and death, if left untreated. CTEPH is caused by persistent obstruction of large, middle-sized, or distal pulmonary arteries due to limited thromboembolic resolution in the pulmonary vascular arterial tree. Every patient with CTEPH should undergo evaluation for Pulmonary Endarterectomy (PEA) after referral to institutions with an experienced multidisciplinary CTEPH team.

It has been suggested that vascular loops in the cerebellopontine angle and internal auditory canal are involved in the etiology of audio-vestibular symptoms. Several studies have focused on the compression of the eighth cranial nerve by vascular loops but have yielded contradictory results regarding their clinical significance. The aim of this study was to investigate whether vascular loops in this region correlate with audio-vestibular symptoms and which loop features - if any - can potentially lead to symptom manifestation.

Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) respond to altered physiological conditions to alleviate the threat. Production of the 70 kDa heat shock protein (HSP70) is up-regulated to protect proteins from degradation. Sequestosome-1 (p62) binds to altered proteins and the p62-protein complex is degraded by autophagy.

Laparoscopic total gastrectomy is on the rise. One of the most technically demanding steps of the approach is the construction of esophago-jejunal anastomosis. Several laparoscopic anastomotic techniques have been described, like linear stapler side-to-side or circular stapler end-to-side anastomosis; limited data exist regarding hand-sewn esophago-jejunal anastomosis.

Objective: Carotid artery stenosis is considered a determinant factor for cerebrovascular events, estimated to be the cause of 10% to 20% of all ischemic strokes. Transcervical carotid artery revascularization (TCAR) has been offered as an alternative to transfemoral carotid artery stenting and carotid endarterectomy to treat carotid artery stenosis.

Methods: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective and retrospective studies reporting the outcomes of patients who had undergone TCAR for carotid artery stenosis.
