Psychological effects of subclinical epileptiform EEG discharges. I. Scholastic skills.

The possible effects of subclinical epileptiform EEG discharges on educational skills have been studied. Twenty children with proven or suspected epilepsy and known subclinical EEG discharges underwent telemetric EEG and video monitoring during standard tasks of reading, mental arithmetic and manual dexterity, and at rest. The discharge rate was significantly lower at rest than during execution of a task.

The development of lateral event-related potentials (ERPs) related to word naming: a four year longitudinal study.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded from the left and right temporal and parietal sites during a word naming task. Subjects were a group of children that were followed over four consecutive years starting at Kindergarten. ERP waveforms contained a sequence of positive and negative components (N150, P240, N360, N530 and SW).

Effect of implantation site on phagocyte/polymer interaction and fibrous capsule formation.

Implants of Silastic, Estane, polypropylene oxide and an HPOE/PBT segmented polyether polyester copolymer were qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated, with respect to interaction with mononuclear and multinucleated phagocytes as well as fibrous capsule formation, after implantation at three sites in the rat middle ear. The volume of the phagocyte exudate surrounding the implants, the degree of implant degradation and fragmentation and the thickness of the fibrous capsules were found to be correlated with the implantation site. From these findings, it can be concluded that it is important to assess the biological performance of a biomaterial at carefully chosen implantation sites.

Birth stress, autoimmune diseases, and handedness.

A large nonclinical sample of left-handed and right-handed subjects completed laterality and medical health questionnaires. The group of left-handed subjects showed a raised incidence of birth complications and learning disorders whereas no differences were found for birth order and maternal age. Left-handed and right-handed subjects showed similar incidences of autoimmune diseases, allergies, migraine, and stuttering.

Alterations in molecular species of cholesterol esters formed via plasma lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase in human subjects consuming fish oil.

The influence of a dietary supplement of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids containing eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) on the molecular species of cholesteryl esters (CE) formed via the plasma lecithin (phosphatidylcholine)-cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT; EC 2.3.1.

Whole-lung lavage under hyperbaric oxygen conditions for alveolar proteinosis with respiratory failure.

Whole-lung lavage under hyperbaric oxygen conditions was performed in two patients suffering from severe respiratory insufficiency in pulmonary alveolar proteinosis. Under these conditions, gas exchange was maintained and the mixed venous partial pressure of oxygen and oxygen saturation showed increases to acceptable levels. This enabled us to limit the FIO2 in order to extend the oxygen tolerance and to perform lavage procedures more effectively.

Blood-brain barrier permeability during Cuprizone-induced demyelination. Implications for the pathogenesis of immune-mediated demyelinating diseases.

Blood vessels in the superior cerebellar peduncles were studied in Cuprizone-fed mice for leakage of proteins into the parenchyma. The status of the blood-brain barrier was determined at various stages of demyelination both by tracer methods using horseradish peroxidase and immunochemically using antisera to extravasated serum proteins and was compared to three positive and negative control conditions. The results showed no evidence of significant protein leakage into the subendothelial basement membrane or extravascular space in Cuprizone mice, during the development of demyelination.

The biological performance of calcium phosphate ceramics in an infected implantation site: II. Biological evaluation of hydroxyapatite during short-term infection.

Macroporous hydroxyapatite was implanted submucosally in the rat middle ear and studied after intratympanic injection of a Staphylococcus aureus suspension. The middle ear infection was induced 1 week after the implantation, and the effects of infection on the middle ear and the implant material were evaluated after 1, 3, 7, and 14 days by light and electron microscopy. The findings in the infected middle ear with an implant corresponded well with those described for the infected middle ear cavity without an implant.

Regulation and structure of an Escherichia coli gene coding for an outer membrane protein involved in export of K88ab fimbrial subunits.

The nucleotide sequence of the faeD gene of Escherichia coli and the amino acid sequence of its product is presented. The faeD product is an outer membrane protein required for transport of K88ab fimbrial subunits across the outer membrane. The protein is synthesized as a precursor containing a signal peptide, and the tentative mature protein comprises 777 amino acid residues.

The innervation of tandem muscle spindles in the cat neck.

Patterns of innervation were examined in tandem muscle spindles teased from silver-stained muscles of the cat neck. Each tandem spindle was composed of two or more encapsulated receptors linked in series by a shared bag2 fiber. In most tandem spindles, two different types of encapsulation were identified according to differences in their intrafusal fiber content.

Hemispheric distribution of ERP components and word naming in preschool children.

Patterns of primary afferent termination in the external cuneate nucleus from cervical axial muscles in the cat.

Using the method of transganglionic transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP), the distribution of primary afferent projections was examined in the external cuneate nucleus (ECN) from different muscle groups in the forequarter of the cat. The terminal zones of afferent fibers from three shoulder muscles--clavotrapezius, acromiotrapezius, and spinotrapezius--were compared to projections from suboccipital muscles, dorsal neck extensors, and muscles of the proximal forelimb. Each muscle group had a labelled terminal zone that occupied a different subvolume of the ECN.

Implicit Theories of Personality: Further Evidence of Extreme Response Style.

Five groups of 19 subjects made ratings on 11 personality trait scales of overlapping subsets of 59 artificial stimulus persons who were described by one to five personality trait adjectives. The data were analyzed per group of subjects (blockwise) and per type of stimulus person (questionnaire-wise) by means of three-mode principal component analyses. This yielded highly similar structures for the scales, and in the blockwise analyses, for the stimulus persons.

Effects of hemisphere-specific stimulation on brain activity and reading in dyslexics.

Dyslexic readers, classified as L-types or P-types, received direct or indirect stimulation of the right (L-types) or left (P-types) hemisphere. Direct stimulation was produced by presenting words in the left (L-types) or right (P-types) visual field. Indirect stimulation took place through the presentation of visual-perceptual (L-types) or phonetic (P-types) demanding texts.

Plasmid-mediated degradation of dibenzothiophene by Pseudomonas species.

The microbial transformation of dibenzothiophene (DBT) is of interest in the potential desulfurization of oil. We isolated three soil Pseudomonas species which oxidized DBT to characteristic water-soluble, sulfur-containing products. Two of our isolates harbored a 55-megadalton plasmid; growth in the presence of novobiocin resulted in both loss of the plasmid and loss of the ability to oxidize DBT.

Plasmid-borne Tn5 insertion mutation resulting in accumulation of gentisate from salicylate.

Plasmid-borne Tn5 insertion mutants of a Pseudomonas species which accumulated 2,5-dihydroxybenzoate (gentisate) following growth on 2-hydroxybenzoate (salicylate) were obtained from a pool of mutants that were unable to grow on naphthalene. One such mutant was characterized further. The ability of this mutant to oxidize gentisate was 100-fold less than the ability of a Nah+ Sal+ strain harboring the unmutagenized plasmid, although both strains oxidized and grew on salicylate.

Afferent projections from forelimb muscles to the external and main cuneate nuclei in the cat. A study with transganglionic transport of horseradish peroxidase.

Muscular and cutaneous afferents from distal forelimb distributed to the cuneate and external cuneate nuclei have been demonstrated in cat with the method of transganglionic transport of horseradish peroxidase. Injections of the same tracer were also done in ganglia C7 to T6 to demonstrate the afferents to these two nuclei. It is concluded that only muscle afferents terminate in the external cuneate nucleus.

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment of chronic osteomyelitis of the jaws.

A review of the literature on treatment of chronic osteomyelitis of the jaws shows that hyperbaric oxygen is often recommended as an adjunct in treatment of this disease. Definite criteria to indicate this treatment and to evaluate the results have not been reported. The results of hyperbaric oxygen treatment of chronic osteomyelitis of the jaws in 16 patients are presented.

Central projections from cat suboccipital muscles: a study using transganglionic transport of horseradish peroxidase.

Central projections of suboccipital muscle nerves were examined following exposure of cut peripheral nerves to the tracer horseradish peroxidase. Labelled fibers entered the C1 and C2 dorsal roots and accumulated in the dorsolateral part of the dorsal funiculus. Many labelled fibers entered the grey matter of C1 to C3 in ventrally directed bundles which passed medially to the base of the dorsal horn.

Dichotic listening ear asymmetry: patterns of longitudinal development.

Dichotic listening research with children has continued to be prevalent although numerous authors have described both theoretical and methodological limitations with traditional dichotic listening free-recall paradigms. The present research adds to this growing skepticism by reanalyzing two major longitudinal studies of children's ear asymmetries. These two studies, based in different countries (United States, Holland), utilized highly similar paradigms (free-recall digits), subjects (males), and age levels (kindergarten and second and fifth grade).
