To operationalize the palliative care approach and improve care across services, a palliative care pathway (PCP) was developed in Western Norway. The PCP is an evidence-based framework for palliative care assessment and interventions in the form of a web-based flowchart. An electronic questionnaire aimed at health care professionals (HCPs) examined perceived usability and content.

Methods: A qualitative, explorative research design with individual interviews was carried out based on a semi-open interview guide. A total of 6 doctors and 6 nurses working in medical or surgical departments at a Norwegian University hospital were interviewed.
Background: Emerging tick-transmitted illnesses are increasingly recognized in the United States (US). To identify multiple potential tick-borne pathogens in patients from the Upper Midwest and Northeast US with suspected anaplasmosis, we used state-of-the-art methods (polymerase chain reaction [PCR] and paired serology) to test samples from patients in whom anaplasmosis had been excluded.
Methods: Five hundred sixty-eight patients without anaplasmosis had optimal samples available for confirmation of alternative tick-borne pathogens, including PCR and/or paired serology (acute-convalescent interval ≤42 days).
Background: Dysbiosis of the gut microbiome is frequent in the intensive care unit (ICU), potentially leading to a heightened risk of nosocomial infections. Enhancing the gut microbiome has been proposed as a strategic approach to mitigate potential adverse outcomes. While prior research on select probiotic supplements has not successfully shown to improve gut microbial diversity, fermented foods offer a promising alternative.

The aim of this study is to explore and describe nurses' and doctors' experiences of how organizational structures in hospitals influence timely recognition and acknowledgment of EOL.
Methods: A qualitative explorative design was applied, with data collected through 12 individual in-depth interviews using a semi-structured interview guide.
With approximately 39 trillion cells and over 20 million genes, the human gut microbiome plays an integral role in both health and disease. Modern living has brought a widespread use of processed food and beverages, antimicrobial and immunomodulatory drugs, and invasive procedures, all of which profoundly disrupt the delicate homeostasis between the host and its microbiome. Of particular interest is the human gut microbiome, which is progressively being recognized as an important contributing factor in many aspects of critical illness, from predisposition to recovery.

One of the only unmodified animal products used in medicine is squalene, a triterpenoid derived from shark liver oil, which when formulated into an emulsion is used as a vaccine adjuvant to enhance immune responses in licensed vaccines. However, overfishing is depleting deep-sea shark populations, leading to potential supply problems for squalene.

However, limitations in these vaccines have been recognized due to their requirement for cold storage, short durability of protection, and lack of access in low-resource regions. We have developed an easily-manufactured, potent self-amplifying RNA (saRNA) vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 that is stable at room temperature.

The update, which has incorporated recommendations for children (following the adult recommendations for epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment), includes significant changes in the management of this infection and reflects the evolving controversy over best methods for diagnosis. Clostridium difficile remains the most important cause of healthcare-associated diarrhea and has become the most commonly identified cause of healthcare-associated infection in adults in the United States.

Plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1) is the major inhibitor of profibrinolytic plasminogen activators (PAs). This study was undertaken to evaluate the contribution of PAI-1 to SSc pathology in the skin.

Patients are often initially diagnosed with a mild viral infection, and illness readily resolves in most cases. However, as many as 3% develop life-threatening complications and nearly 1% die from the infection.

Recently, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has been successfully used to treat recurrent C. difficile infection.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFFecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has been shown to be a superior therapeutic modality for the treatment of recurrent Clostridium difficile infection (RCDI). Recently the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) determined that human stool should be classified as a biological agent and its use should be regulated to ensure patient safety. Consequently, the FDA determined that prescribers of FMT must possess an approved investigational new drug (IND) permit to administer FMT for the purpose of conducting research or treating any gastrointestinal condition other than RCDI.

Most cases of CDI respond to a standard course of antibiotics, but recurrent C. difficile infection (RCDI) has become increasingly frequent, and alternative treatments are needed.
