Synthesis and biological activity of substituted 2,4,6-s-triazines.

Reaction of 7-hydroxy-4-methyl coumarin with amido/ imido alcohols in ethanol containing concentrated hydrochloric acid afforded 8-aralkyl amido/imido-alkyl-7-hydroxy-4-methyl-coumarins (1a-f). Interaction of 1a-f with hydrazine hydrate in pyridine resulted in 1-amino-8-aralkyl amido/imido-alkyl-7-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-oxo-quinolines (2a-f). Treatment of 2 with formaldehyde in ethanol resulted in 1,3,5-tris-(8-aralkyl amido/imido-alkyl-7-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-oxo-quinolinyl)-2,4,6-hexahydro-s-triazines (3a-c).

Differences in perceptions by stage of fluid adherence.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine in a group of hemodialysis patients whether perceptions of barriers to and benefits of adherence to fluid limitations, perceived seriousness of and susceptibility to the consequences of nonadherence, self-efficacy, and thirst differed by stage of fluid adherence.

Design: Cross-sectional descriptive design.

Setting: There were 147 participants from rural, suburban, and urban outpatient hemodialysis units.

Pyrrolidinobenzoic acid inhibitors of influenza virus neuraminidase: modifications of essential pyrrolidinone ring substituents.

We recently reported the first benzoic acid, 1-[4-carboxy-2-(3-pentylamino)phenyl]-5,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)pyrrolidin-2-one (8), that is a potent inhibitor of avian influenza A neuraminidase (N9) and, unlike other reported potent neuraminidase inhibitors, does not contain a basic aliphatic amine or guanidine nor a simple N-acetyl grouping. However, 8 was a poor inhibitor of influenza B neuraminidase. In the present study we further evaluated 8 as an inhibitor of human influenza A NA isolates, and it was effective against N2NA but found to be 160-fold less active against N1NA.

Vestibular evidence for the evolution of aquatic behaviour in early cetaceans.

Early cetaceans evolved from terrestrial quadrupeds to obligate swimmers, a change that is traditionally studied by functional analysis of the postcranial skeleton. Here we assess the evolution of cetacean locomotor behaviour from an independent perspective by looking at the semicircular canal system, one of the main sense organs involved in neural control of locomotion. Extant cetaceans are found to be unique in that their canal arc size, corrected for body mass, is approximately three times smaller than in other mammals.

Prevalence of anaemia among adolescent girls in rural area of District Meerut, U.P.

The prevalence of anaemia in 504 adolescent girls (10-18 yrs) representing 24 subcentre villages of Daurala block of Meerut was 34.5%. The prevalence of mild, moderate and severe anaemia among adolescent girls was 19.

2-CdA in the treatment of hairy cell leukaemia.

Introduction: Hairy cell leukaemia (HCL) is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder. Treatment options available are splenectomy, interferon, DCF and 2-CdA. 2-CdA is considered to have curative potential as proved by the other studies.

Reproductive tract infections among rural women in Meerut.

The present study was done among 500 women of reproductive age group. Study revealed overall prevalence rate of RTI of 44.8%.

Examination stress: changes in serum cholesterol, triglycerides and total lipids.

Serum cholesterol, triglycerides and total lipids were estimated in twelve students exposed to varying degree of examination stress. Serum cholesterol and triglycerides exhibited a rise proportional to degree of examination stress whereas total lipids exhibited an initial rise followed by a fall. Values of all these parameters attained control level when the stress was over.

A new Eocene archaeocete (Mammalia, Cetacea) from India and the time of origin of whales.

Himalayacetus subathuensis is a new pakicetid archaeocete from the Subathu Formation of northern India. The type dentary has a small mandibular canal indicating a lack of auditory specializations seen in more advanced cetaceans, and it has Pakicetus-like molar teeth suggesting that it fed on fish. Himalayacetus is significant because it is the oldest archaeocete known and because it was found in marine strata associated with a marine fauna.

Production & evaluation of a monoclonal antibody against human myeloperoxidase.

We describe the production of a mouse monoclonal antibody (H2E1) against human myeloperoxidase antigen. After production and characterisation, this antibody was compared with commercially available monoclonal antibodies, cytochemical myeloperoxidase and previously produced polyclonal antibody. Reaction with various cell lines proved that this monoclonal antibody was specific for myeloid lineage.

Calla positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia after etoposide-based therapy for Ewing's sarcoma.

This is an unusual and interesting case report concerning a 10 year old boy with an initial diagnosis of Ewing's sarcoma of the right tibia. He was successfully treated with a chemotherapy regimen consisting of vincristine, cyclophosphamide (cumulative dose 7200 mg/m2), doxorubicin, etoposide (cumulative dose 2700 mg/m2) and cisplatin and local radiotherapy to the tibia. After an interval of 37 months he developed CALLA positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia with 11q23 chromosomal abnormality.

Hairy cell leukemia--an unusual presentation.

Hairy cell leukemia is a chronic lymphoproliferative disorder affecting middle-aged adults, with the median age of 50-55 years. The majority of the patients present with cytopenia. A high count is usually a feature of the hairy cell leukemia variant.

In vitro anti-vaccinia virus activity of some marine plants.

Seventy three marine plant extracts were tested in vitro in chick embryo fibroblast cell culture and their anti-vaccinia virus activity was evaluated in terms of reduction in number of plaques by the extracts. Only seven extracts were found to show the activity. Sargassum wightii, a seaweed had the highest activity, reducing 65 per cent of plaques formed by vaccinia virus.

Clinicosocial aspect of osteo-articular tuberculosis.

The study constituted clinicosocial analysis of 194 cases of osteo-articular tuberculosis. The disease was common in 1st and 2nd decades of life but not rare in old age with male preponderance. Majority of the patients were from rural area belonging to lower economic classes.

The isolation and partial characterization of bovine parathyroid secretory granules.

We have developed a procedure which allows the isolation of secretion granules from fresh parathyroid glands. Following collagenase digestion of the tissue, the cells were broken with osmotic shock and a crude granule/mitochondrial pellet was obtained by differential centrifugation. Before loading this fraction onto a metrizamide density gradient it was subjected to brief sonication to disrupt the mitochondria.

Some genetic markers among the Bodos of North Bengal, India.

Some genetic markers have been examined among the members of the Bodo tribes, North Bengal, India. Gene frequencies have been estimated and comparison has been done to evaluate differentiation with the common population. The overall intergroup heterogeneity was not significant for Rabha and Mech and also in consideration with the local population.
