(2) Methods: In this quantitative investigation, 21 students (both men and women of the same age) volunteered to participate. We first evaluated their physical fitness; then, we analyzed their reaction times and speed.

Results of the error rate analysis are reported in [1]; this paper focuses on a broader analysis of how the entire collection of classification categories, especially those in the Inconclusive range, were used by the participating examiners. Volunteer active examiners with AFTE membership or working in laboratories that participate in Association of Crime Laboratory Directors (ASCLD) were provided with 15 sets of three known and one questioned cartridge cases fired from a collection of 25 new Ruger SR9 handguns.

This paper describes design and logistical aspects of a decision analysis study to assess the performance of qualified firearms examiners working in accredited laboratories in the United States in terms of accuracy (error rate), repeatability, and reproducibility of decisions involving comparisons of fired bullets and cartridge cases. The purpose of the study was to validate current practice of the forensic discipline of firearms/toolmarks (F/T) examination. It elicited error rate data by counting the number of false positive and false negative conclusions.

Ferrocene and its derivatives and nickelocene undergo facile ionization when exposed directly to the ionizing plasma of a helium-plasma ionization (HePI) source. Mass spectra recorded from such samples under ambient positive-ion-generating conditions show intense peaks for the respective molecular ions [M] and protonated species [(M + H)]. The protonation process occurs most efficiently when traces of water are present in the heated nitrogen used as the ".

The aim of this study was to characterize the EVs released by the dairy isolate Lactiplantibacillus plantarum BGAN8 and to gain an insight into the putative mechanism of EVs uptake by intestinal epithelial cells. The cryo-TEM observation undoubtedly demonstrated the release of EVs (20 to 140 nm) from the surface of BGAN8, with exopolysaccharides seems to be part of EVs surface.

In this study, numerical simulations of three types of ions in two different MS interface designs have been carried out. In contrast to previously reported numerical studies, nonequilibrium gas dynamics due to rarefied gas effects has been considered in modeling the flow expansion and a realistic space charge effect has been considered in a continuous ion injection mode.

Here, we describe the development of an atmospheric solids analysis probe (ASAP) source for a commercially available miniaturized, single-quadrupole mass spectrometer and subsequent modification of the instrument to allow it to run as a deployable system; we further go on to describe the application of this instrument to the identification of the contents of drug seizures. For the drug seizure analysis, a small quantity of the material (powder, tablet, resin, etc.

We have investigated the immunological effects of live bacteria-free supernatant collected from GABA-producing Lactobacillus brevis BGZLS10-17 on Concanavalin A-stimulated mesenteric lymph node cells (MLNC), an in vitro model of activated immune cells. We have shown that GABA containing and GABA-free supernatant of Lactobacillus brevis BGZLS10-17 have strong immunoregulatory effects on MLNC.

The results of this study demonstrate that for detecting nitramine-class explosives, such as 1,3,5-trinitroperhydro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) and 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazacyclooctane (HMX), 1,4-benzoquinone (BQ) is a highly effective and efficient dopant. When used in conjunction with ambient-pressure negative-ion helium-plasma ionization (HePI), 1,4-benzoquinone readily captures an electron, forming an abundant molecular anion (m/z 108), which upon exposure to vapors of RDX and HMX generates adduct ions of m/z 330 and 404, respectively.

Repeated use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is also uncommon. In this paper we will present a very rare case of a 7-year old girl with recurrent fulminant myocarditis with heart failure requiring cardiopulmonary resuscitation and mechanical circulatory support with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

To investigate the role of MIF in the function of the intestinal barrier, we have explored intestinal permeability and gut-associated immune response in MIF-deficient (MIF-KO) mice. The absence of MIF provoked impairment of tight and adherens epithelial junctions in the colon through the disturbance of E-cadherin, zonula occludens-1, occludin and claudin-2 expression, which lead to the increase of intestinal barrier permeability.

The MS hyphenation performance of UniSpray®, a new design of atmospheric pressure ionization source was evaluated in both SFC and RPLC modes. Sensitivity, stability, versatility and matrix effects offered by the UniSpray were assessed in positive and negative ionization modes and systematically compared to an electrospray source (ESI) using 120 natural compounds covering an extended chemical space. In a first instance, a multivariate approach was used to screen and optimize the UniSpray source settings to maximize detection sensitivity.

Understanding ion transport properties from the ion source to the mass spectrometer (MS) is essential for optimizing device performance. Numerical simulation helps in understanding of ion transport properties and, furthermore, facilitates instrument design. In contrast to previously reported numerical studies, ion transport simulations in a continuous injection mode whilst considering realistic space-charge effects have been carried out.

In developed economies, the sign of the price increment influences the volatility in an asymmetric fashion--negative increments tend to result in larger volatility (increments with larger magnitudes), while positive increments result in smaller volatility. We explore whether this asymmetry extends from developed economies to European transition economies and, if so, how such asymmetry changes over time as these transition economies develop and mature. We analyze eleven European transition economies and compare the results with those obtained by analyzing U.

According to theory, the maximum phase delay for a very weakly absorbing homogeneous sample should be within 45 degrees of a very strongly absorbing sample, while for heterogeneous samples the phase delay can be greater than 45 degrees. Here we report the observation of photoacoustic phase delays greater than 350 degrees by extending the use of step-scan phase modulation photoacoustic spectroscopy to study a non-repetitive dynamic system in situ, in real time.

Laser ablation increases the number of elements that can be used for differentiation by eliminating problems commonly associated with dissolution and contamination. In this study, standard residential window and tempered glass samples that could not be differentiated by refractive index or density were successfully differentiated by LA-ICP-MS.

The relative concentrations of trace elements in a solid sample are examined to provide a "fingerprint" composition that can be used for identification and source matching of the material. Residue samples are matched to bulk materials using PCA.
